The other weekend i met up with some buddys, one of wich had an 89 cr250r that i rode in the shalepit. the bike had a pro circuit pipe n silencer, and the engine was bored .30 over, and the bike was an absolout rocket. Ive ridden a mint 97 cr250 before, and this thing was worlds ahead of it in power, and i was wondering how honda could go backwords in engenering. that bike wheelied in every gear, and with the exception of an extremely soft shock, it was the best bike ive ridden.

the guy got the bike for 800, wich was pretty good, especialy sence the thing wasnt ridden much for a long time, you can tell from the original shroud decals and other bits.

I think that bike had front suspension that almost couldn't be fixed. MXA had a write-up on the suspension and felt like it would take a major revalve to get it race ready. I'm sure it's just fine stock for a shale pit.

I swapped mine out for a set of off a 91

All of these older 250 Hondas ripped but the 89 250 & 500 had the Worst Forks Honda ever made. Swapping to a set of Progressive fork springs and the heavier KYB weight oil made them ridable.

I bought mine brand spankin' new....had the forks worked on by 3 different companies and never did it ever feel right, I even bought all the showa tools and tried different "fixes" myself....the shock felt awesome compared to the forks but it just "sucked less"....It did have a great engine, brakes and ergos....was a head shakin beotch though when going WFO in 3rd gear on up....I also liked the color that year it was RED Red...not orangey red like earlier and later years.

My replacement CR250 in '92 was about 12 billion percent better all around....

Newbe to the site. Oldtime MX'er. 74 Elsinore 125 was my fav.

Searching for some info on my bike and found this thread. Thought some of you might enjoy.

Bought this back in 91. Raced it a few times back in 93-97. Felt pretty good passing (and placing) against a bunch of 18yr olds after a 10 yr layoff. Been a great bike over the years and still kick's some serious butt. Biggest issue was the repair I had to do last year. Replaced the right (magnesium) side cover due to a corrosion issue. Fortunately, a new one was still available.

Still running strong.

Honda issued updated fork internals early in the season. I had mine in fall of 88 and Procircuit set them up so I passed on the update. 500 seemed to work better than the 250 but still was not the worst fork I have ever had. They did however pale in comparison to the 86-87 conventional forks. Worst forks....I still think the 480s had some dismal dampers, would dive and bottom with a clank without being plush over little stuff. The bike would shake like a wet dog bad enough to shear off the steering stops and punch holes in the tank with the upper pinch bolts. The 89 itself is reliable as all hondas were. It was good enough to easily overlook the bad forks.

Oh the wheelies are aided by the etremely soft shock. Weight transfer back is greater as the back squats.

hi,

I have an 89 CR 250...Love it. I changed the front brake master for a 1995 unit so I could run avs levers. Then i switches out the forks for 1992 units. PLUSH! Granted, I am just a vet novice/intermediate on my better days, but these newer Showas are sweet!
I race in a vintage club in So Cal.
