Fused t2 all the way to t6 and bolted t6 and t7. He almost broke his neck but thankfully did not. He lucked out and had one of the best surgeons in the world, Dr Brian Hood. His ribs are broken from the back. So lots of chest pain. He can feel the back incision. He is a strong kid. He will be in physical therapy for the next year or more. They won't have any idea what shakes out from this until around a year. He had to notify the FAA today and I can only imagine how tough that was.

Sounds like overall good news, but still a tough road. I fly corporate, and I’ve had to jump through some hoops to keep my medical ( diabetes ).

I know how tough it is having your livelihood based on keeping a medical certificate. Truckers do as well.

I pray he has a full recovery and can get right back in the seat!

Chatted with Jake for a while last night via text. He didn't mention all that surgery. Sounds something a little like mine in 2016. L2, T6, T10, 5 broken ribs in the back plus leaky spleen, collapsed lung, etc. They only needed to fuse L1-L3 because my L2 had nothing left. The others were compression fractures they didn't even mess with surgically.

I shared that with him as well as that you 'd probably never know I had gone through anything like that now from outward appearances. There are some lingering issues. Just don't affect my legs. Actually improved my golf swing! And it changes every day! My body has been healing noticeably ever since. At the pace of a glacier. But definitely noticeable over time.

Sounds like he took a hell of a lick. Especially for a high-side. I looped out and came off the back over a jump. That ground out at RV gets really hard as the day wears on. They don't really have any trees shading the track, so the sun bakes that red clay pretty good in the afternoon.

Best to you and your family.

Really good to hear even though there are still unknowns.     I truly hope and pray he makes a full recovery.

The swelling is causing a lot of the pressure right now for sure. Best for him to stay as active as he possibly can as well as find the right physio who will be aggressive with his recovery and not for everyday living. Just make sure to not trust anyone at their word when it comes to his recovery and health. Get all the opinions you can and make as much of an informed decision as possible. Do not feel rushed.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank all of you. I really appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers for Jake. I have been a part of Vital for some time now, and while everyone has their own quirks, it means so much to me that we can all come together as a moto family and pray and think about Jake. Thank you all again from the bottom of my heart. If any of y'all are in the Colorado area or wanting to come out I will always have a extra room and a spot in the garage.

Jake had a tough day with the nerve blockers wearing off. They've made him sit up today for the first time and got measurements for a wheelchair. He was in a good amount of pain most of today but was starting to subside this evening. Thinking they will keep him at Baylor Medical Roberts trauma center at least until Friday at a minimum probably extending throughout the weekend.

Hoping for the absolute best for your brother. This has been a real tough thing to read knowing it could happen to any of us, let alone actually live it. I’ve been praying for him and yourself.

Visited with Jake and his dad, Terry, a little yesterday. He's still in ICU and in a lot of pain (which is possibly a *good* sign, as he can *feel* it). Keep your good thoughts coming.

Please be very diligent with the wheelchair fitment. I had a guy fit me and placed 3 massive pressure wounds on me and had to have surgery.

wishing for the best. Unfortunately this is the worst part of our sport and man does it absolutely suck hard. Cannot imagine going through this, it must be absolutely devastating having your life change so dramatically in a split second...

In other terrible news, Just heard about a 17 year old kid who died at a J-day race @ southwick last weekend Sad So everyone out there your life could change in a literal split second, so count your blessings and be thankful for every day that you have with family and friends and don't take a single second for granted

Stopped by the hospital today to visit with Jake. He's improving and just like what you'd think of a Moto guy. Tough as nails. Looks like they are moving Jake out of ICU today and he prepares for the rehab scenario. Got to spend some time with Jake his dad who is right there at the track every weekend riding. Typical Moto family. They live Moto.. Great kid and he's got a great  family and attitude. I told Jake we would see him at the track again. Thats a promise!

Update - Jake has been moved to the hospital's inpatient therapy center after spending some time in the trauma ICU. He will be there for about 4-6 weeks, maybe even more. The good news is that his pain is under control now that they have figured out the right medication. However, yesterday was his first day of therapy, and it was tough. He had to get 42 staples in his back. Unfortunately, he still can't move yet, but he's slowly getting very slight feeling each day. He was a bit disappointed when he couldn't tell which toe the nurse was touching, but we keep reminding him that even small improvements, like being able to sit up and down more times each day, will add up over time. We want to say a big thank you to everyone who has reached out, sent their prayers and support, and visited Jake at the hospital. We are truly grateful. Can't wait to see this kids comeback and journey, gonna be a good one. Kids a tough soab. First photo gets me I will say. Again I appreciate everyone so much. Thankyou y’all

Gonna see how many signatures I can get him next weekend in Denver. Going to possibly hit up the triumph dealer Sunday for a RC meet thing. Depends on if I fly back to Dallas Sunday morning or not.

It looks like his he is in pretty good spirits. Like I said in another thread, you can tell the strength of a man in the way they handle adversity. That should bode well for him.

I’ll keep praying for him.

Update- past couple days have been good! Pain is getting better each day. Said he is starting to feel his hardware in his back. He sent me this last night- Not much today went really good my core is activating more and some more feelings- Which really pumps me up for him. Guess they also found he previously broke his T7 and never knew about it. Kids tough. Was wanting to come up with something cool for him to keep his spirits on the upwards this weekend in Denver.

If anyone was any connects that would so dope! I got a calendar and was going to try to get it all autographed but don’t think that’s possible with all the people there tomorrow.

I've been in a chair the last 23 years from a racing accident, T4-T9 with fusion from T3-T10 and can tell you the first year is by FAR the hardest but also the absolute best opportunity to get back walking. This is when physical therapy is extremely important before scar tissue begins to develop around the spinal cord. One of the best things to do is move his legs/feet/toes and have him mentally try to make the same movements as this sends signals from the brain through the spinal cord to the extremities. Even just sitting there in bed do it as much as possible to send those signals through the nervous system. I know the pain is severe from all the trauma but the first year is so critical in making the most and quickest progress.

I am in no way a medical professional but I have the experience of going through all of this myself. One of the medications the Dr's like to use to control leg spasms (if he's having them) for spinal cord injuries is Baclofen which I completely avoid. The leg spasms while sometimes are inconvenient will actually help to keep muscle mass in the legs and especially during the first year you want the brain to send those signals to the legs to keep the nerves active.

One of the biggest pieces of advise I can give for fitting a chair is to get a ROHO seat cushion. It's an inflatable seat that can be adjusted and is a miracle at avoiding pressure sores.  The jelly cushions still allow pressure points that can result in pressure sores. In 23 years the only time I've ever had a pressure sore was from using a jelly cushion.

You'll have good days and bad but don't ever give up hope and take advantage of the injury being fresh as the absolute best time & opportunity to make the most progress. It can be overwhelming learning how to adjust to all the changes happening and the information flying at you from all over but better days are ahead. Please feel free to contact me anytime if you have questions, need advise, or just talk to someone who's been through all the same shit you're going through right now.  Carl24Lindsey3@gmail.com

Best wishes and prayers your way, us MX guys are a different breed and you'll get through this day by day. Attack your recovery like you would racing and training.

I just wish you the best, it's hard to still hear such traumatic injuries happening.

For my part,i'm paralized from my neck down, since my crash in 2001 and i think that you'll have to learn and find out the best way to get along with any kind of disability for yourself.

As you can see in Carls advices (his own experiences), ii think everyone needs to find  the best "set-up" for himself.

Here in Eastern Austria, it's common to use Vicair Cushions, we already moved from Roho to that technology. I found out that the Roho Cushion doesn't offer me enough feedback of any pressure to my butt, because it's still floating on air. And as a quadplegic, i'm even more in danger of skin sores, because i can't move even a bit. In our Therapy Center the most of the paraplegic patients are sitting on modern style jelly cushions, as it offers the most stability.

Baclofen itself isn't a bad thing, but i replaced it totally with THC, in combination with CBD. Over here, it's acommon use against pain and too much spasms.

In my opinion, it's for sure good to get advice from someone who's already been there and done that. But every spinal cord injury is unique and will never ever happen exact the same a second time.
