Kinked X-Ring Chain at Master Link

I noticed one of my chains has a slight kink at the master link ever since it was new. It’s a DID ERVT x-ring chain. I have re-cleaned / lightly greased the master link several times, yet after every ride it has the same kink to it. I have the proper Motion Pro master link press so the master link hasn’t been pressed too far in.

Does anyone with more experience running sealed chains know if this is normal? Or will this cause an issue? I just want to make sure this is a common thing, before I snap a chain.

Not normal, usually means a tight link/plates. Never used that tool, so IDK. I am sure others will chime in.

Does the link move freely by hand? I wouldn't call that a kink, x/o ring chains have friction so the links wont always look straight. As long as it isn't binding and you can move that link by hand freely its fine.  It might be the angle of the picture but something looks a little weird with that link plate. Need to see a different angle

Agree with @motoracer58 on his comments and the pic , what are the circular marks on the plate behind the clip ? Witness mark from previous fitting ? Hoping they aren’t your o rings fitted on the outside of the plate

The circular marks are just residue from the previous install, but I can see why that would look suspicious from just this one image.

If I push on the master link by hand, it is noticeably tighter than the other links. I’m going to un-install and re-evaluate.

Lightly sand that link plate until it moves about the same as the other links.  I suspect the rubber just doesn't want to compress.  It might loosen up with use but I don't like the kink from new.Blush

I ended up trying this guys suggestion first and it worked.

I lightly put some pressure on the link using the “press off” portion of the Motion Pro tool and it has resolved the tightness of the master link. It’s moves as freely as the other links now. It appears I just had it pressed on a little too tight. Lesson learned.

Clamping too tight and squishing the o-rings is really easy to do, even when you’re cautious about it… ask me how I know.

Anyway, thanks for posting the tip. I’ll have to try that next time.
