Ohlins Suspension

Just saw an ad for Ohlins YZF kits and it made me wonder, do ohlins still rate high in racing? I don’t recall seeing them for years.

I know HEP used to run Ohlins in 2019 or 2020. I don't recall seeing any since then.

Don't think any of the race teams are using it this year. Never ran them myself so only second hand information but someone I know used to run them but said it just got too much trying to find a setting because the forks were super sensitive to track changes and didn't work very well when they weren't set quite right, this was probably a good 6 years or so ago so things may have changed these days.

They are super pretty though

I had their TTX fork cartridges/spring conversion and Flo shock on my 18 KX450. The forks were really good. I honestly couldn’t tell any difference between the shock and the OE unit, if anything, the OE unit may have worked better.

I think Ohlins has really focused on the road side of things. They have a big presence in road racing, sportbikes, and bagger Harleys. I’ve got a set of their shocks on my Street Glide and they’re great.

Best forks I have ever ridden.  Shock was fine as well but had too much HS damping with no adjuster. To be fair I didn’t know their history and I am sure it was an easy fix if it was my bike.

Too much HS compression or rebound dampening?

Compression, it was ass high. Like I said, the guy bought the kit used. Forks where like butter. Rode high in the stroke and made the bumps disappear.

Trickiest part with ohlins is finding tuners imo. It’s just not super popular in the states.

I had Ohlins on a 2022 KTM 250XC. They were decent but felt like they blew through the stroke too quickly for me. We tried a couple different valving changes but to get them to be supple up top, they'd blow through. If we went firmer, they got harsh on small stuff.. I also had a weird top out noise from mine at times.

RD Suspension. I’m running his spring fork conversion inserts & shock on my 2022.5 450 SX-F FE. Very happy!

MXA tested Rob’s Ohlins forks & shock set up and it was a great review. My suspension has the same set up and it rocks!

I have ran plenty of Öhlins stuff but they are super soft out of the box. The best stuff i have ridden have been used stuff out of their race department.

Even here in Sweden, they are not that popular any more. I would take my stock parts to a good tuner before i went and bought a Öhlins kit again.

I was just saying in general there are far more tuners that know Kyb, Showa, wp. I can drive 20 miles and find tuners that know that stuff.  Ohlins not so much.

I get what you are trying to say. Yes, finding shops with plug and play settings are far less common but most tuners would be able to make changes based on good feedback from riders.

Not worth the money, they do look nice though. Tried them several times...nobody local(several good shops in Greater Denver) would touch them at the time. So have fun boxing, shipping, waiting and crossing your fingers they arrive back, let alone in piece. Last set I had in the factory box had shipping damage. Anyway, revalve your OEM stuff.

They are interesting to service and require unique tools to do so that a lot of suspension shops and tuners don't have because of the low volume. I loveeed the set of TTX inserts I rode with.

That shock with no HSC adjuster wasnt the best idea. The one now has HSC adjuster. Couldn't live without it.

I had an older Ohlins shock on my RMZ.  It's nice, no complaints, once dialed it was super compliant, it performed best when asked to do the impossible, maybe that's where they separate from the stock stuff.  I remember getting out of shape with it and riding it out smoothly thinking "holy shit, the stock shock would have responded by killing me"

Did that suspension help you podium the 3 man C class race?
