Ahhh, memories...A kid at my jr. high had one seemed like red/white tank, think it was a '72 or '73 model..First time I ever rode a "real" motorcycle...not a lawnmower mini bike or a Yam mini enduro 60 that I rode before...

I was riding at the old Sacramento State Fairgrounds...the On Any Sunday mile track that Jim Rice crashed coming into first turn... it had a TT track inside of it...Crashed it of course....No longer buddies after that..lol.

Close...My bike was green, number plate on front and plastic fenders. Same basic bike though. I went to a salvage yard and installed longer shocks, thinking it would help. I wore it out! Broke the rear hub, bent the foot pegs down and ran it until there was ZERO compression. I didn't realize you had to ever clean the filter! ha ha...

I wore that thing out but I sure wish I still had it or could find another one to restore. Ah, the memories!

Oldskool,

Neat... I thought about getting the down pipe back in the day, but being a kid, didn't have the money. Did it really nhelp the power? What shocks did you install? I never raced mine because it was a 90 and I thought I'd have to race the bigger classes 100/125.

Those are great pics oldschool. Was the downpipe a Bassani?

It was a Bassani pipe and I worked for my parents all summer to pay them back for it. I wanted it really bad! When I got it, I thought it was really great. I went on and on about how powerful the bike was with it and I remember that the first race with it I got the holeshot and finished 1st overall for the day (3 motos back then). In reality, it may not have done much at all, but to me it did and that was the only thing that mattered.

I believe that the shocks were Curnutts but I'm not sure now.

I raced that bike in '73-'74 in the 0-90 class. Yes, the 0-90 class. The hopped up XR75's (I think that some were actually 121cc's were the big competition in '74. The YZ80's were not that fast yet, or so it seemed at the time. What I am probably am remembering were actually the Yamaha GT80's as there were very YZ's around Texarkana at that time.

Those were golden days now that I look back on them with my mind's eyes. Oh the stories that I still tell about those days...

Hard to tell from the picture, but Curnutts (Curclunks we called 'em) had red springs.

Maybe they were something else, but I do remember my dad having the spings changed. See how big I am in the picture! My mom worked at "Spoke-n-Wheels", a Kawasaki dealership in Texarkana. At that time, they were really into racing and may have had access to other springs for the Curnutts. I just don't remember those details.

My brother did get the first KX125 in Texas. The dealer sleeved it down to 100cc's and he raced the 91-124cc class with it. Never did very well, though. He was not an agressive rider, he just wanted to have fun and ride around. Never got hurt, though.

The reason why the '74/75 YZ80's were kind of slow is that they were based on the 72cc GT80 motor. In '76 they went to a 79cc based unit and thats when they really started to run good.
