Looking for opinions as to whether this cylinder needs replated or if it can just be honed. I left it in my vapor blaster for too long and some pitting appeared.

Thanks in advance.AD6560C6-07A8-4312-949D-95031DD2924C

Sure looks like it. How’s it feel?

Going over it with both my finger tip and nail it feels pretty smooth.

have you gone over it with emery cloth to see if it goes away?

Was it on a B or C piston? Personally, I'd plate it to an A and make sure the ports are chamfered properly.

I have not tried that. Can that remove light pitting?

It is off a 99 KX250 if that helps. I bought a new wiseco piston for it. Not sure if that answers your question.

Personally, I have used emery cloth on heads but I don't think I would use it on a cylinder other than to see if it removed in a very small spot.  I wouldn't clean it up with one. There is no way you would keep it round.   If it did look like it would clean it up, it wouldn't hurt to do a couple swipes with a ball hone.  That would sharpen your ports a little but you might like it better.  I'm 2/3rds shade tree 3/3rds tight ass.

All a matter of budget. A fresh nikasil matched to your new position size is the right way to go. If it’s a beater bike, hone it and run it.

I want it done right, just didn’t have the extra $400 for the nikasil in my budget. What would be the worst that could happen if I take the hone and run route?

I’d hone it a little and see what it looks like and then probably run it if there were no edges on any of the pitts especially in the path of your ring gaps. Proper way would be to bore it or sleeve it.

I didn't see you say pitting. I thought it was surface rust

I’ll run the hone on it tomorrow and post another picture. Thanks brocster.

The missing section can do damage when it’s getting bounced around the crankcase..

See the light gray area that starts a few mm below the top of the bore? That's bare aluminum where the plating is worn off. It needs replated.

Good eye. Agree 100%. Plate it now, or after a couple hours of run time when it strips more plating. If you do it now, you can buy one top end kit instead of two.

Thanks chuck356. I’ll go with your recommendation and let off the extra cash.

Thanks gravel. Better safe than sorry. I’m gonna go that route.

I believe 99 and, 00 KX’s had issues with flaking. I had a new 00 cylinder that started flaking at 20 hours. $400 for plating might seem like a lot but, it’s a lot cheaper than locking that piston up in the cylinder.

I’d have Millennium replate and, match a piston.

Thanks Chance. All in on the replate now.

Definitely don't have it re-plated for a wiseco.

I’ve heard bad things about their cranks but for the pistons on the contrary. Can you please educate me on this?

Forged requires a looser fit to prevent cold seizure and will cost performance and slap more at idle. Nothing inherently wrong with the piston itself.

Thank you. When I called MT today they said they offer the piston and ring as well as plating all for $619. Would you go that route?

Ok just read up on this. Essentially rings are harder with wiseco wearing the nikasil faster. Is that correct?

Never had that problem but you can’t go wrong with MT.

Wiseco is fine and you won’t have to worry about the piston shattering like a cast can. Cast are fine too. I’ve ran both in my kx250 with fine results.
