2001 San Diego Rd 2 (Jeremy won Rd 1 and was pretty cocky going into Rd 2. Carmichael’s first big win, and it came against Jeremy. He would go on to win 10 in a row that year (I think).

History being made, McGrath was so dominant that this felt crazy at the time 👍 Pure age/nostalgia bias on my part, but that is some 'golden age' stuff there imo.

To think that ater after that, Stew was rocket fast and said he wants to "break all the records" and he wants to be remembered... Enthusiasm and confidence, got to love it.

Funny how we now get mad if someone mentions they'd like to aim for a certain record (not saying they're going to beat it, just that its a goal).

Not 10, he tied Jeremy at 13 straight.

I was at that race in San Diego. At the time, it surprised me that RC could hold on for the win. Now in retrospect, it isn't so surprising.

I was also at the San Diego race one year prior when RC crashed and tore a piece of his leg off with the footpegs. Yeowch!

Funny you mention that. I just flipped through the July 01 issue of Racer X and there were some letters to the editor that were very similar to the convo we’re all having now. I’ll throw up a pic if I remember.

Race was incredible. Don’t see races like that anymore. They were both trying to get to the lead ASAP and check out. Nowadays they sit behind their opponent for awhile before making the move if they’re close to the same speed. Next week at A2 was amazing too. McGrath’s last win.

I admire the champs that hang in there for a few more seasons even when the writing's on the wall.

I would rather have them around than not - compared to RC, Villopoto and Dungey who all ducked out before things went "downhill". They all admitted in later years that they had a lot more to give.
