Had a pretty routine fall on my left shoulder and broke my scapula at a sprint enduro, did it about 3.5 weeks ago and finally got confirmation today that surgery is not required. I guess as long as its in the body and not any of the important stuff up top they just let it heal and work its way back to normal or a little deformed as it doesn't really do anything but protect your ribs. Mine broke most of the body off and have a little piece that's stable and shouldn't cause any issues.
Doctor pretty much said we will do X-ray after 6.5 weeks and see if its healed, wear your sling most of the time but as long as it doesn't hurt you can move your arm around with some support from my right arm.
Anyone else do a scapula, what was your back to riding time like and any lingering stuff? Im pretty confident 12 weeks is a pretty realistic timeline to ease back into some mountain biking and dual sport riding.

I broke my collar bone and scapula at the same time. Scapula wasn't displaced so no surgery. CB was plated. On the bike in 8 weeks. No lingering issues.
Thats good to know, mine is obviously displaced but not in way that will cause issues I guess.
Pretty weird I did the scapula and not the collarbone too considering I fell right on my shoulder. Same kind of wreck I've had about 20 times but got it just right this time I guess.
I broke my scapula, no surgery just rest and recovery and I don't have any lingering issues. Take the time to let it heal and you'll be good to go.
I fractured my scapula along with a 3rd degree AC separation some years ago. As in a crack the whole way up the scapula that made the doctor go OMG when he looked at the xray. I got very lucky that there was not more damage. No surgery needed.
Can't recall the time frame I was out but as usual, let it heal. I will say that I should have been better with range of motion on the rehab side. I did a pretty good job but it could have been better. Do your rehab, get the range of motion, build the strength. I have not had any issues other than that. Heal up buddy!

Not much to do with a scap facture. As long as you give the bone the recovery time it needs, you will be fine.
Grade 3 AC separation and fractured scapula last June, no surgery on either. I was capable of riding again by September. Biggest difference I’ve noticed since healing is a kind of loose feeling on the scapula but no serious pain.
Did anyone else get bruising on the inside of your bicep? Also have more pain in the kind of front of shoulder area the most when I sort of rotate arm out. Was concerned I damaged something else but doc says its just that the muscles went through a lot of trauma.
I broke my scapula in three places the summer before last. I have a some crepitus with rotation behind my body that sometimes causes pain. My range of motion is slightly limited. My scapula fractures *edit* were not as significant as yours. Some of my range of motion might be scar tissue where there are a lot of muscles that attach to the scapula. Some of it from breaking 15 ribs, collar bone and sternum in the same crash. Didn’t ride again that summer but played a little hockey that winter and was back to riding the year after.
At 16 years old, endoed and had the bike land on me breaking my scapula into 8 pieces, no surgery, Im 62 years old now and never any complications or pain other than the initial break. Also broke my nose in the same endo while wearing a Bell Moto 3. Bike landed on my back and head broke the helmet on both sides of the goggle port. I was most bummed about winning my first moto of my life and the second moto turned into the first ambulance ride of my life.
Just broke my scapula and 7 ribs 2 weeks ago on a 6 gear get off. It's 50/50 whether mine needs surgery or not due to how far separated it is. Any prayers you guys can send my way would be helpful.
I did my scapula in a very easy fall in a turn in 2006, no lingering effects
Broke several ribs, torn labrum and broken scapula about 8 years ago at age 48. Back to light riding in a few months. Scapula healed on its’ own and has given me zero issues.
Same injury but 6 weeks! But was 16 when this happened so bones healed quicker then 😂
Good luck! Seems for me they were mostly concerned about the socket itself having a fracture or the area around it that would cause your shoulder socket to heal at a weird angle which would cause some issues with range of motion. The body itself doesn't really do much except protect your rib cage.
The surgery looks like it would suck, huge incisions to get to your scapula and they literally have to filet all the muscle off your scapula body to plate it. Would not be ideal to get surgery but seems like they are pretty straightforward and just have to give the muscles time.
Did my scapula and collarbone about 4 weeks ago, thankfully no surgery and got similar orders from the doc. In the sling through 5 weeks then new x-rays. Hoping to be good to go at 8
Im right at 4 weeks too, been mostly in the sling except at home when im sitting on the couch and stuff. Doctor kind of told me working on a little range of motion stuff wont move the bone really as long as you don't have pain then it should be safe to do.
Oh man! You'll be fine eventually. I, on the other hand, swapped out in a 4th gear whoop section so bad, that I flew off the bike and slammed into the face of one with my right shoulder while flying backwards at 45mph. This broke every rib and punctured the lung on my right side, in numerous spots, and, left my right ribcage permanently pushed forward about an inch and a half.
Luckily, Vital member Humter Carrot was there and loaded my bike and took me straight to emergency. He was in the room when the doctor took a pointy pair of flat nose pliers and hammered them between my ribs to release the air. He said it was gnarly as fuck as bloody air swooshed out of the hole. Oh yeah, he also didn't let them cut my tech 8's off. Not that I'd ever need them again though.
Okay, back to the subject matter. My scapula had an inch wide split right through the socket. A doctor pulled it together and put 2 pieces of, what looked like plumbers tape and several screws to hold it all together. This didn't work as the screws backed out and scraped my humeral head flat. The pain was so intense that high dose opiates were used to enable me to work. I should have went to an OHSU shoulder specialist immediately, but, 8 years later I was sick of the pain and the pills and saw Dr Robert M. Orfaly who put a prosthetic joint in in an intense 3 hour surgery. This helped with the pain tremendously and helped get me off the methadone and oxy that I was eating like candy.
Humter said that he'd never seen someone hit the ground as hard as I did, and live. I no longer race, and rarely even ride because, on my way out of the hospital, the doc grabbed me by my good shoulder and said, "Don't fuck this one up, because I can't fix it again!"
Hey, I sent you a message, but figured I would post here. I broke mine similar to yours almost 2 years to the date. I ended up almost as good as new, but I was 43 and it took longer than I wanted. The scapula healed with a 1/2 inch protrusion, so my shoulder blade looks different on the left - more flat - less pronounced as the right. The muscles feel a little weird, different. Its been two years to the day and range of motion is almost 100% and no pains or clicks.
I made some notes and at week 6 I rode a YZ250F around the yard gently. Couldn't wheelie. Week 7 I tried to do one pushup and did it, but felt sketchy. Week 8 I rode the 250SX and did some power wheelies. Week 9 I had 80% range.
Then I have week 44 and I'm normal feeling. I did 25 pushups. I went riding for the first time, hare scramble stuff. I was a nervous wreck and I had a mild slide out in the mud where I landed on that shoulder. Got up, brushed it off - once I knew I was ok I never gave it a second thought for the rest of the weekend.
My advice, don't rush it. Test yourself and set little goals, but don't kid yourself. I was able to do some stuff at week 8 and 9, but I would say I needed every bit of 24 weeks to get mostly healed. And honestly, it was about a full year before I got to this point. I had to keep working on my range as if you were riding a street bike and throwing up the "right turn" arm signal. That was my hardest range to get back and its finally 95%, but lots of work went into that.
Also I wore a sling for a couple weeks, but gave it up as it was causing a lot of elbow pain. As for the actual pain, it was very tolerable. My road rash was the more difficult thing. Thank god for tegaderm bandages. But I could have just not gone to the doctor at all and still healed as good as I did. The human body is pretty amazing.
Pit Row
Figured I would update this if anyone is looking for some info on the same injury.
Its been 10 weeks since I broke it, no surgery just a sling for about 5 weeks. Worked on range of motion after that which was painful at first but came around pretty quickly. After about 6 weeks I started doing light band work and just bodyweight strength stuff with that arm. Rode my mountain bike at about 7 weeks.
Last two weeks I have done overhead press, rows, bench press with just the bar and it feels great. I rode my dirtbike last saturday and it didnt really hold me back at all, I could tell I was a bit weaker when pulling back on the bars a bit but thats about it. Still working on strength but we are pretty much back in business.
I just got my update from the doctor. No surgery required. Seems to be healing nicely and should be able to ride in the next couple of weeks.
The 7 ribs healed ahead of plan by about 3 weeks. I bought a recliner-lift chair on day 1 and slept in that for almost 2 months. Healed the ribs much faster than sleeping in bed.
At different times but I have broken both sides and recovered with no problems. Both times Dr’s always said it was an extremely rare injury.
I got landed on when a guy in front of me didn't double and I had to slam on the breaks and case the double and the guy behind me still launched (not his fault... fault of the guy taking the middle line and not jumping). Broke my scapula and was back to riding in 6 weeks and doing flips into the pool while holding my arm in at 3 weeks
I do have arthritis issues in that shoulder more than my other 18 years later but no real issues.
How has your recovery been up until now? I’m 2 weeks into a fractured scapular. Haven’t been able to sleep in my bed so far as it’s too uncomfortable to lay down properly 😞
Man just pile up a ton of pillows behind you so you’re almost sitting up it worked for me. You’ll gradually start taking out pillows as you recover.
I was riding about 3 months after I did mine with zero pain or anything just sore muscles after a day of riding, I was mountain biking a couple weeks before that and I haven’t really thought about my shoulder in months. Little sore if I do a long stationary bike ride with all the weight in my shoulder but that’s about it.
Cheers mate. Our season over here in the UK starts in March so I’m going to be out for the first few races. Happy to see I’m not the only one with this awkward injury
I broke mine, with 7 ribs and broken collar bone. Was back riding in 6 wks. First couple of wks were weird as everything was moving around. Hard to sleep . But was easy after that
yeah it sucks pretty good but it gets better and you wont even think about it anymore, mine was really bad displaced but barely enough to not need surgery so mine took a while if you just fracture it and it doesnt move a bunch like mine it would be easier as well
Also weighing in...a couple years past my injury and I'm 100%. I don't even think about it. Make sure to let it heal correctly and focus on stretching so you can regain as much mobility as possible. That is way way more important than what you want to do at week 6 or 8 or 12 etc...
Tennis ball up against a wall and massage the scapula area once its healed, it'll help a lot. Did my collarbone and scapula at the same time, had to get my collarbone plated and just let the scapula heal no surgery on it. Tennis ball hurts, but it'll feel better after doing it.
I did in my scapula, humerus, labrum and rotator cuff real good. Took forever to heal, started easy and mellow skiing in about 3 months. Get well soon. Was about 4 months before I could raise my arm high enough to shampoo my hair etc. Sucks getting old and hurt.
