Don't most passenger vehicle engines use hydraulic lash adjusters nowadays so there is no manual valve clearance adjustment?

I've done 4 strokes and 2 strokes, but I'll admit I did have help from Haines, I like to have a repair manual around for reference.

So why is the concept we actually worked on our cars so foreign to you. And the concept that most people actually did? The street I grew up on, the dads that didn't work on their car was the anomaly.

I never said you didn't work on your vehicles, I was just pointing out that it's not in the owners manual because you don't do it anymore. We just had a cold snap and when it's 0 degrees the oil doesn't flow to those lifters like it used to and if they're a little old and tired you'll get some ticking until the oil warms up, but there's no way to adjust that, need to do an r&r on it.

Sure I don't do as much engine stuff as you used to because engines and transmissions are pretty much sealed units now, but I've done more wheel bearings, half shafts, u-joints, water pumps, alternators than most people, heck I did a brake and rotor job Wednesday night after I put my kids to bed.

When I was growing up we'd get a new vehicle for the family about every 10 years and have a few crappy cars for mom and the kids, we were always wrenching on them to keep them going, not much has changed for me.

No manual adjustment needed as time goes on, but they still have to be adjusted when assembling the engine or any time rockers are removed (for a pushrod engine). Solid lifters have a set gap (lash), while hydraulic lifters need to be preloaded.

The meme was in regards to regular maintenance, not repairs or mods.

My friend calls his wife 'Big Toe' because he is always banging her on the coffee table.
