Hey all, turns out the stars have aligned and its a last minute booking to Glendale next weekend for myself and 65 year old dad. Flights went on special and its too good to knock back.
We'd be coming from Perth, Australia so approx 20 or so hours transit all in to LA, then due to cost of domestic flights, its looking cheaper to hire a car for the weekend and drive across to Phoenix and back. Not mad about seeing the desert.
Land in LA Thurs evening, fly out of LA Sunday evening back home.
PSA my fellow Aussie convicts: USA is on sale, Perth to LA is at $1500AUD return on Qantas! Book before Feb 5.
PLEASE Vital, help me make the most of my day/weekend at the race. I was in Phoenix last year, don't care much for tourism, but Moto is my religion. Any and all hook ups and insights welcome - ticket prices, industry seating? Pit set up at Glendale relative to the stadium? All the fluff and special things that would complete this bucket list trip for the pair of us. Best seating areas? Was Glendale a problem last year with fumes? Parking, hotels etc. Is PHX downtown close enough to stay if we drive in and park? Looks to be?
Sunday (especially after a race) I'm assuming all the staple go-to's in Corona are closed, but is there any kind of security fencing to go up the hill to the test tracks for a look around?
Any insight appreciated! Thanks guys.
Make sure you bring plenty of Visine. Last year they only cracked the roof open which caused a lot of people to get sick and have bloodshot eyes for a week. It was so bad my son’s teacher called us saying she thought my kid was high!
Pits are usually right next to the stadium and a short walk away. Stadium is about 20min from downtown PHX. If you don’t plan on staying in Arizona outside of just popping in for the race, save your money and get a hotel near the stadium. It’s also West of downtown so a bit easier to get out of town on the way to California if you’re staying in Glendale. I do not envy that 6 hour drive from AZ to LA and back but if I had the same schedule as you, I would leave after the race and drive through the night. Can save a night on a hotel, avoid traffic etc.
Make the drive into a part of the appeal: you get to see the American Southwest!
About 10-15 minutes after you enter Arizona on I-10, you'll pass through Quartzsite, AZ. Stop at Daniel's Fresh Beef Jerky store and get the finest jerky I've ever had. It's good.
Take note that the thousands of people you see there are mostly snowbirds from the colder states. They drive their RVs down to Quartzsite in the winter to escape the snow.
Yeah like the guy said above trust me that’s a horrible drive that seems like forever!
I’m not sure what’s in the area exactly I’m a little drive away in Scottsdale. Love my area, there are spots for older people and then spots for the college kid's.touristy stuff and lots of restaurants and bars. I’m close enough I’ll be ubering to the race but it’s pretty pricy.

There are hotels located at wetgate which is walking distance to the stadium. If you drive to the stadium parking is 20-40$, they dont allow overnight parking or youll be towed so keep that in mind if youre drinking. Your best bet is to get a hotel at westgate and walk over, or get a hotel somewhere else and uber over. The hotels by westgate are surrounded by restaurants and entertainment, movies, top golf, mini golf, axe throwing bar(welcome to america), as well as regular bars.
The pits are on the backside of the stadium and are also walking distance from anywhere you park or westgate hotel/parking. Generally people also tailgate in the parking lots like we do for football. I think SX offers some VIP track walk experiences but youd have to look into that. For the next day the only close MX track to that area is call ACP(Arizona cycle park) its about 35mins from westgate, and its were a lot of locals ride, its has 3 tracks available to the public(vet, main, arenacross)
On the pic the red circle is usually where the pits, manufacturers, fmx stuff is, the red lines are the entrances used to get into the event. The Purple circles are hotels, the blue circle is the "westgate entertainment district" a big circle with a bunch of bars restaurants, the green circles are more restaurants and small food places.
I live about 10mins from the stadium, if you have any questions DM me
Way too much road time for 4 days, I could see the drive from LA to Phx. but not back. Spend the few extra bucks dump the car in Phx. and fly back to LA. Try and stay in the west valley where the stadium is. Plenty of food places around the stadium to eat. Good thing about Phx. is the freeway system is useful and can get you places quick. So staying in Phx. isn't an issue, finding a place maybe. We have our big professional golf tournament the same weekend so lodging will be slim central-east valley. Good thing you're not into the tourism, because there isn't much, especially on the west valley. but if you did want to venture out a little, Lake Pleasant isn't too far away. Could rent a boat and some tackle if that's your thing. Or you could go out to ACP, one of the last moto-tracks left in the state.
Be advised, the Waste Management Phoenix Open is that weekend too. You may run into a fair share of duffers.
If Moto is your religion, the Ride / Shoot day (on Friday) is something to not be missed! You'd be around people that know moto, not just casual fans. These guys are the best.
DrMark sets up a loft at the stadium, see the link below. It seats 125 true moto fans and usually sells out, but he some times has last minute tickets. In the past, they've had former racers, journalists like Super Hunky & GuyB, and almost always a few motoheads from Australia in the loft.
I've always had a great time; you and your father would feel welcomed and have an awesome time!

If you have budget, this isn't that bad a deal. Club seating and pit pass included. https://feldexperiences.com/collections/sx-2024-glendale/products/2024-…
This. We'll be riding Friday at Motoland from about 10-3. No shooting this year. We've had some of you Perth MX'ers over before, so we know what we're getting into.. lol Heck you probably know some of those guys. I'm assuming all 5 people that ride MX in Perth know each other! haha
Thanks for all of the responses, especially ZinAZ's mud map. Now looking at flying realistically - true reality of the toll of 12 extra hours travel in a car is something else in such a short total travel window.
Donman, this looks awesome and I'll consider it. Not a DM guy on here, but use socials. Where can I get in touch with those responsible/more info?
Feld experience looks good, but maybe not $800USD good.
40 hours flying and 12 hours driving to watch a race in Glendale, AZ is absurd. I really feel like you’re going to be let down.
Weather permitting there Amigo. Right now its looking like rain Tuesday - Thursday next week. Motoland got rained out this weekend so hopefully it dries up enough to ride Friday.
I've been to 6 different SX venues, and Glendale is always a great race to attend. Longer track given the design of the stadium, pit party is always solid at Glendale, and the weather is usually gorgeous for tailgating. Its also early in the season so guys are not worn out of too injured. Its a good one to attend for sure. Hopefully the stadium people figure out the air circulation issue that they had last year, it was brutal - my only gripe.
I’m not knocking the venue. Phoenix is a great city. Thats just a ton of travel just to watch a race and go home.
Yeah I saw the 10-day forecast. This getting slammed with floods every week and then trying to recover for the weekend is brutal. Hopefully not that deal again next week.
The stadium has a roof. I’ve seen this brought up a few times in different places. Rain shouldn’t be a factor for the Phoenix round.
You better look for a hotel quick, there are some other events happening in phx that weekend and they were either sold out or stupid expensive.
Pit Row
This is exactly it. We've got a newborn due in May, this is the last west coast round for somewhat ease of accessibility, and currently everyone is healthy. Jett is coming up, Eli is on his way out, Glendale is indoor and huge, bucket list/last chance/once in a lifetime trip. Stars aligned, international flights are cheap, stacked field, race guaranteed not to get rained out, superfan of the sport - why wouldn't we push and make it happen? Recover/Sleep on the plane.
So, if it rains and they have to close the roof, do we have Co2 gate v2.0?
Loved Glendale outside of this. My eyes were completely fucked for almost a week.
We went off on a tangent there about our local track in AZ.. not the SX.
As for you other guys talking about the fumes.. that was last year only. Something was different than every other year it's been in that stadium. One of the previous years it did rain and they had the roof closed and there were no fume issues. I think last year, because of it being an April race instead of the usual Jan/Feb, it was warmer and they had something calculated wrong in their heat/AC/Ventilation equation.
Yep, agreed. Anxious to get back out to the track soon. Hope you are well.
BS12 - DrMarkR at gmail , can answer probably any question(s) you might have...
And although TheMilkman said you might be let down, hooking up with the Arizona guys will give you the best experience in that short of time.
I've been going every year since 2014, and truly cannot say enough good things about this trip and the people I've met, they are all now family to me! ..... It wasn't really in the cards for me to go this year, however, after hearing about your flight and travel time just to see a race, I'm encouraged to just make it happen for myself as well... I guess I'll have to wait and see if it works out. In the meantime, I wish you the best... You and your dad will have a terrific time!!!
Don’t need to justify yourself to the Debbie downers! As a super fan I’m sure you’ll get a ton out of your trip. It’s a shit ton of travel time yes, but on the way home you’ll have all these great memories to discuss with pops.
We’ll be passing each other in the air, I’m headed to Melbourne from San Francisco that weekend lol! I really like my Australian buddies, one of my favorite countries to visit.
Also be sure you have your eye on possible seat upgrades. I don’t know how Qantas does it, but right after I booked my United ticket I was able to upgrade to business SFO-MEL on the United app for ~$1K. I saved $7k by doing that versus buying business seat outright ($11k!!!!). Being able to lie down and sleep during that 15+ hr flight makes the travel so much easier.
Dude I hope you have a great time - I loved living in that area. I lived in the apartments behind Cabela’s, across from the stadium. The rigs usually park there the day prior, and I’ve seen Mitch Payton going in to the hotel beside our complex
The stadium is in the Westgate entertainment district so plenty of nightlife. There’s also a casino like 5 min from there. You might even see some fighter jets if you look up lol
Eat at Bobby Q's in Phoenix.
100% we left early because my wife was on the edge of puking her brains out. There was zero ventilation in that building. As you walked up to the stadium before you went in you felt all that air rushing out of the building and it was a strong race gas smell. I do commercial hvac and there was no exhaust ventilation in that building. For that reason I’m skipping it this year. I’m from so cal, there is nothing like a1 or San diego
I say again… better look for hotels quick. Everything around the stadium is sold out or stupid expensive. There is golf happening that weekend as well and Scottsdale hilton garden in was 640 a night for what they had left 2 weeks ago or sold out. I had to get a hotel in south chandler and it was 230 a night.
I second this. Get the brisket appetizers that are like egg rolls filled with brisket with the chipotle sauce. Best ever
