Hi Forum!
In October I had a slide out, where my knee went in to the ground. Three days ago I had an MR, which confirmed a torn PCL.
Now I am considering whether to get surgery or not.. What are your guys experiences? I am not in pain, can cycle fine, run OK.
Weird …with torn PCL you can hardli walk ..
My doctors advised me agains it if pain is not there but it is bothering you on daily basics …sure you have to do it.
Operation is tough … recovery time is 9-12 months for normal people without profesional phisiotherapy support.
I tore my acl 4 years ago & didn't have it repaired. I wear a brace for dirt biking & mtb. So far it has been a non issue. I'm not playing sports with lateral movements .
I tore mine a year ago September, also in a slide out. My knee stability is not an issue, which seems kinda weird and it really doesn’t cause any discomfort. I have a wierd feeling around my kneecap at times, a relatively sharp but not too uncomfortable (anymore) pain which seems in the meniscus area ( opposite side from the pcl of course ). I don’t jog anymore , I’m 52, but have been getting back to regular cycling without any issues. I did put different wedges in my cti braces to limit the amount my leg extends, seems ok I really don’t notice much difference. I was told they typically don’t repair them and I didn’t question that really , but I will say it’s been a long process to get the range of motion back , especially sitting on my knees with legs under my butt. The best hockey player in the world, Connor McDavid also tore his a few years ago, it’s wasn’t repaired either I was told, and he is the best skater still in the league by a large margin.

If it does not hurt & stability is good, I would run it. Wait until it’s complete destroyed before you have it repaired. I would focus on strengthening muscles in the leg to help protect the remaining ligaments. I am not a Dr. in real life….
EXACTLY what Sandman said!
Like most Motocrosser’s, I have an orthopedic doctor on speed dial, and over the years he has helped me with a broken Radius/Ulna, compounded clavicle, twice put my little finger back in place and my knee!
In 2006, I dabbed a foot in a sweeper and without even crashing, completely detached the ACL in my right knee! Other than a little swelling, I wasn’t even sure it was anything worse than a sprain etc…but an MRI & further evaluation confirmed the injury!
Through complete luck and no other skill on my part, I just happen to have the physiology to have normal knee function with a detached ACL! (Believe it or not that’s actually a thing!) John Elway played his entire NFL career with a detached ACL (google it!) and there are other examples as well, such as he hockey player mentioned above too! (It goes without saying that it’s strictly a case by case decision and in NO way reflects how “tough” or determined a person might be! My brother was tougher than a two dollar steak, hell, I watched the crazy sum-bitch give HIMSELF stitches to a cut in his hand once, yet when he tore his ACL, he was completely debilitated and could NOT walk without crutches or a cane due to the lack of stability in his knee!)
My Doctor’s exact words still play in my head going on 18 years later…”My goal as your physician is to give you a quality of life that is BETTER than what you have with your injury, and right now, surgery & recovery will NOT provide that!” He insisted that we monitor and evaluate as time passed, and repair my knee IF or WHEN the time came that I was debilitated by the injury worse than getting it repaired would create! Thankfully for me, I’m still getting around with ZERO negative impact on my life, and at 58 I still ride moto, MTB’s and all my other interests without repairing it and my right knee is doing just fine to this day!
Run it till it is hurting you or impacting your life WORSE than the reality of having it fixed will have on you! Only you & your doctor can know exactly when that time might come!
(AND like Sandman also says… I am NOT a doctor in real life either! 🤪 your results may vary!)
Good luck with it! 😎 👍❗️
Rather than start a new thread, I am curious what other’s experiences were with this injury? I injured myself at work and had an isolated PCL tear in my right knee. My ortho doesn’t recommend surgery if I am able to rehab it well. ACL was definitely a no brainer to get surgery and I haven’t any issues post surgery, butt PCL is not very common and I don’t see a lot of info out there. I appreciate any advice or experience sharing.
I tore my PCL but because it wasnt a full tear they couldn't warrant surgery. That was shit 10yrs ago and my knee is cooked still.
I tore my PCL warming up with 60kgs on squats, hyperextended my knee a bit and heard the rip.
Was pretty bad for a while, struggling to walk properly, but I didn't do anything about it, and can now lift, play tennis and ride again just fine.
Lifting weights helps, I think. Didn't hurt me more, just try to not warm-up like a retard nowadays.
I tore mine back in early 2000's. Went 6 months before fixing it. I was pain free during that time and for the most part ok. What started to happen was getting out of lower cars would cause my knee to pop in and out. The planting of my foot and turning and getting out would pop it and to the ground I went. Knee surgery back then was the worst thing I went through. Would rather compound my tib/fib again over knee stuff. Obviously they are much better at knee surgery now than even in 2006.
how many watts ftp with no discomfort? can you do over 1000watts after a good ride with no localized discomfort?
I tore my PCL and meniscus in 2013 and got the meniscus fixed and they just removed what was left of my PCL and I’ve been fine ever since. Zero pain. I run every day. Lift. Ride obviously. It is “loose” if I relax and stand a certain way it will try to “slide out”. But keeping it strong is important. I’m happy with not getting it fixed. I’ve done 2 ACL reconstructions on my right knee and I have way more pain in that knee than I do in my left with no PCL. Just my $.02
Wow, I'm at a loss! Usually I can relate. In 2005 I snapped my ACL, ripped my LCL off, partially tore my MCL, had portions of my medial meniscus floating around upside down, and damaged the end of the bone. I did all this without crashing. My PCL was pristine. What I can say that seems universal with knees is this, if you're having issues with swelling then you need to address it. Swelling causes scarring which eventually can become debilitating. Secondly, you need to keep your strength up. Find the right exercise for you that is most convenient and make it a morning routine. Shit, strengthen, shower and shave. Plan on doing that until hospice shows up for you. Every time I back off I regret it.
Good luck!
