Kids and motocross

Hi,

Its a question without an answer but I am trying to get some advise, thought on what to do further down the road with my kid.  First of all I am not in US just to clear that our.

Here is my issue Smile if anyone could corelate to me and have something to say.

My kid is 8yr old he rides yz65 for a year now.  He competes in the local national  championship and there are like only 3-4 kids competing in only 4 races during the year and he always get some medal spot.   In the region there are other races but they are on different level in terms of how good they race so competing there at the moment I see him only getting him hurt since at the moment he cannot even touch the ground.  He loves motocross and he is eager to train every saturday, sunday its in his head all the time.

While doing the above he also competes in national and international snowboarding competitions. Same situation there in terms of number of racers and racers.  Under europeain Fis ski federation they have only 3 races during the whole season for disciplines he is riding.  There are more races after he gets 14 yrs but the disciplines are different and for which the closest infrastructure to train is like 600 miles from where we are. So basically even if he continues snowboarding when he will reach 14 he will hit a wall.

He races cycling as well but he is too little for that for races.

In short to the above I bust my ass running around for sports for which i dont see any future and he is doing hours of traing each week. He is very active and sporty he adjust to any sport very quickly since his motorics are great, he is competitive and has no fear. Maybe if I divert him to some other sport he might get more future benefit by which i dont mean financial benefit but a possibility to competes further and maybe have some future in it in terms of competition, schools etc.

Now i dont plan on whatsoever in stopping him what he does and loves just i am not sure to what extent should i push him and support him and should i engage him in other sports. I know he is little and things could change overnight . He has tried different sports as well like swimming, football(soccer) etc but i am just trying to grasp the current sittuation.

Thanks anyone thay might have some thoughts.

Alex

The latest sports science research suggests that multi sport disciplines as a young child is better than over-specialization in one. Elite success at age 8-10 isn't really as important as people think it is. Having a kid doing multiple sports and enjoying themselves is the best strategy. What your doing currently is pretty much in line with what's recommended. At some point he'll naturally settle into whatever sport he wants to specialise in, but at his current age there's not much benefit to that.

Thank you Alan very much for your reply.  I was reading as well few articles on the net.  The thing what  kind of worries me that whatever he choose from what he does now I dont see anything further down the road and adding him other sports its a bit too much for him at this age.   Thank you  again.

I would let the kid do what he wants sports wise, within reason and as long as you can afford it. He likely won't make a career out of it, but he can have fun doing what he likes. If there are other things you see he is good at whether it's music, other sports, anything really maybe encourage him there, he may choose to pick up another sport or activity after spending more time practicing that activity.

Alex, As a father and grandfather of moto riders I see zero problem with keeping your son in any and all activities he wants to. If there is one thing I have learned you cannot teach desire! I'm sure there are more sports like motocross but very few you can do with your children or grandchildren and be somewhat on the same level like riding dirt bikes. My best advice would be get a bike for you and ride with your son, you will share the same feelings of accomplishment and challenges you both experience. It will be the best memories he will ever have! My youngest son raced motocross for years, I raced as well we were a father and son team we shared the heartbreaks and the wins it taught us both how to be good winners as well as good losers. My son went to college then Med school, I went on to run a couple companies we both put riding on hold for 10+ years. Last year we met up at a Pro National in Millville - raced amateur day and both trophied it was badass! Guess what? He's buying a bike this year and we have several races we are going to do together again, I am pumped. I'm 64 he's 36 it goes fast and so do we!

I understand your situation quite well. We used to live in an area with only 1 public track, my son was the only child who rode there and there was no racing. We had ti drive 3 hours for him to ride and race with other kids. Even niw that we have moved, it is an hour to the nearest track and he races against kids who have their own tracks in their backyard.

We do gym training and other sports during the week. Its very important for coordination and motor skills and I have seen the impact on the bike immediately. But his heart is in moto and thats the main thing.

Other than that, it sounds like your son gets ti ride alot (just maybe not racing?). My son actually enjoys riding with me more than racing. Do you ride?

Thank you very much mx 219 spitinabucket , kage173.   Yes I do ride as well but not truck, enduro mostly.    Yes I agree with what you all say and I will let him ride as much as he wants and want stop him in any sense of doing it.  Just that its one thing riding together , having fun , going to couple of races and other thing is racing, training and going on races throughout the region and the whole logistics behind it.   I am not sure should I look for balance in between or should I fulfill what he desires most taking him to races around and competing although has no future benefit in doing it.   Its a bit tough to explain but I believe you understand what I am trying to say.

Thank y'all again.

I'll put it this way, in today's world you have a GOOD problem - if you can find the time and can afford it then i'm sure he'll show passion for one sport more than the others. Gretzky enjoyed his off season lacrosse and baseball while his skates took a rest for the summer. You have an eager kid who has desire and wants to compete....enjoy the ride my friend. The majority of kids in my area are stuck in their basements with hands on a joystick.

I drag or drive my son to all four corners of the region only to watch him participate without a single competitive bone in his body. I can't complain i suppose, but one day it would be nice if he rolled in last place and and for once wasn't so dam happy or ok with it lol.

Enjoy the fun Aleksandar.

I look at it as there is no future in any sport, especially looking at things from age 8. But what sports do is help shape character and these little hardships and achievements at inconsequential activities are practice for the real challenges of adult life.

Thank you very much everyone.

Yes RV came to my thought and ride around europe maybe on some tracks just for fun.  At the moment I have time and money wise I am ok so far, I can manage the costs.  I  just wasnt sure if what I am doing is the write way since time flyes and kids grow but listening to your comments and suggestion I believe I should let him what he does and see what happens in the near future,

Thanks everyone again.

Alex
