Where do you guys usally snag one of these from and for around how much?

Do you buy two the exact same for parts or do you just buy one and purchase parts for it?

well part of it depends on what you want. A complete finished ready to race bike, A show piece or fixer upper.
Ebay is a good place as long as you know what your bidding on. sometimes guys go nuts adn it tuns into a competition to beat the other guys bidding LOL.

Sometimes things just come up. I was coming home after a 8 hour drive to pick up a pile of crap I found on E-Bay for 150.00. Some guy pulls me over 1 block from my house and says he's got 1 in his garage he'd like to get rid of for 300.00 . So between the two bikes I got 1 full bike.

Having said that if your Lee from On the Pipe Racing you just have guys stop by and say I'll trade you this complete bike for those grips and a quart of oil. <img class= " title="Laughing">

Nothing special I'm trying to get my parents to buy me an old motocrosser for christmas so i can fix it up but we are trying to find something cheap. This will be my first so they don't want to pay to much just incase I don't stick to it and finish it up.

I'll be putting a 79 KX 125 and a couple of rotary 74 KX 250s on e-bay soon.

I'll post when I do.

If this is your first build, I suggest to purchase a bike that runs. Don't be cheap spend a few extra dollars to get a complete bike that runs. Leave the 100 point restorations for guys like Tbond and look for bikes that need the basics replaced like fenders, seat covers, tires, chain and sprockets, grips, filters, etc. Don't buy a bike with missing components like exhaust pipes, rims, engines, forks or shocks because these are expensive components on ebay and the salvage yards. I think you can find a good fixer upper for $500 dollars and another $500 dollars fixing it up if everything is there. Mark my words, you will be happy you spent the extra money to buy a bike that runs.

I suggest keep your eyes open when you are drivin around,
I am always scanning fields / yards / small engine repair shops etc for junk bikes just lying around. If you see something stop in and make an offer.
I found yzvets 78 RM125 lying in some tall grass next to a house.

I prefer real junky bikes because you can get them cheap and and the amount of satisfaction is greater when the resto is complete.

Speaking from the Maico perspective, it is less expensive to buy one that's already restored, or just running if that's what ya want. Go to vintage races, check out Yahoo! groups, classified ads, Mark's Swapmeet (vintagemx.us), or (with caution) eBay.

One factor is eBay - it is such an effective way to advertise, sell, and buy these hard-to-find parts. Buying parts to put build a bike can be very expensive, particularly if you're not familiar with the market and buy stuff for way more than it can be had for elsewhere. It seems you rarely get your money back out of a bike you've worked hard on and restored - you gotta do it for the love.

Thanks for all the tips guys, I think my parents are going to go to a junkyard and tyr to find one or two bikes for christmas. I really want like an old 80 or 50 but who knows what they'll find I don't really care. They got me a boat motor for 15 bucks yesterday and it runs but needs a lil work so now im back to working on that.

In our area, I have seen some fairly good deals on Craigslist. It's a free easy way sfor people to get rid of "junk," and the prices generally seem to run a lot less than something that gets attention on EBay. It's very hard to get a real deal on something special on EBay these days.

Other than that, keep your eyes open.

I saw a SWEET 1979 RM125 last night on ebay. All original. I'm too lazy to post a link.

The Jerk is still out there trolling for victims.

He even uses his name "Todd from OH" or his email

[quote="Bonepony":b67ec]I'd be afraid to dive into a full-size bike. I bought a '71 Z50 Minitrail for $275, and spent $1000 restoring it. I also wasted about 1000 hours polishing the factory aluminum bits and plated hardware while sitting on the floor in my kitchen.

It took two days just to clean all the bits of buffer fuzz off every flat surface in the kitchen.

I sold it for $1800, so my net loss was probably around $2000.[/quote:b67ec]

I bought a '69 Minitrail in a basket. The money I've spent and time I've put in so far would surprise a few people.

I'll be selling one on e-bay real soon. Just have one more part to find for it. A rear tail-lamp mount.
