How many people have thought about jumping back to the 2 stroke?

Best thing to do with a 2007 KX250F? Jerk the engine and sell it on Ebay! Then have the engine cradle altered and have Williams build you a 149.6 cc stroker motor out of a 03 KX125. If the damn radiator shop would ever get through building my radiators this one will be on the track.

I am sure that is going to be a sweet ass bike but what is the price tag going to end up being? Who did the cradle work?

I switched back 2 years ago I had a 05 KX250F and then picked up a leftover 06 RM250 2 years later. I had them both for a little while but hated the kx after I got the rm so I sold it. Contrary to most though the KX never turned into a money pit. I bought it a year old from a friend, who raced Lorrettas on it in the A class, then I raced it for two years and never had a motor problem. I checked the valves and changed the oil and filter that was it. Never had to rebuild or anything which amazes me to this day because he probably beat the hell out of it, and that year had a history of imploding.

We bought the bike as a somewhat crashed year old trade in for $1500.00. Sold the engine assy. on Ebay for $1750.00! So we really started out with a free chassis and $250.00 free surplus cash. A friend did the cradle and machined a few bushings and upper headstays for $300.00 and beer. Lots of beer, I'll probably bring him a few more cases next race too! Outside of the $500.00 (plus or minus $50.00) for custom built radiators it really could have been a budget project. Got a 2003 KX125 core engine off ebay for cheap and things started to get expensive from there when we decided to do more than just a standard rebuild. All in the name of fun though! Hopefully the radiators will be here in the next week or so.

Funny have 180 hours on a 09 450 never a problem with anything. I really dont understand what people mean by a thumper costing so much more. If you take the time to change your air filter and change the oil often the thumpers run forever. If you dont then ya you have an expensive fix. I ride 2-4 times a week motocross only and beat the crap out my bikes but always change my air filter every ride max 2 rides and oil every 5 rides never have had any problems. My 2010 ktm 450 already has 30+ plus hours on the track valves are perfect. People want to think there more expensive but if you take care of them you wont have those problems. A buddy i ride with has 220 hours on his 09 yz 450 just did his second top end 100+ hours each time bike runs like new no valve problems ever. Ive blown up 2strokes and had more carb and power valve issues on two stroke than anything on a 4stroke. I like them both would love a ktm 300 xc to ride at the track but I enjoy 4strokes more.

I have a new rmz 250 that I bought for a good price, but it looks like one season on it only if I can get a decent return on it come fall.

Really want a KTM 150.

I switched back, even though technically I never left. I raced an 08 YZ250F for a couple years, but always had my 02 YZ134. I just didnt ride it much since the 250F pulled me around a little better. It just wasnt very fun to ride/race. I sold the 250F over the summer and put down a deposit on a 2010 250SX..picked it up as soon as the dealership got it in. I LOVE it.

I purchased my 06 CRF 250 in December of '05 (a christmas present to myself)....Had to replace the valves (I went with stock titanium) spring of 08...and after doing desert races all summer, I'm do for new valves again (which is why I'm done with 4 strokes...I'm going with a steel valve/spring kit this time around)..but I will say, when had the valves done last spring the top end was in great shape...but $800 for new valves was a joke (I didn't even have to replace the stock springs...two valves, machined head, and labor for $800? Come on!)....and I'm looking at dropping another $800 (actually it will be a thousand because I've got to buy the steel spring kit)....what a joke.

This bike is for the most part ridden on moutain single track, and the desert...after the $800 repair bill last spring, I changed the oil and oil filter and I clean/replace the air filter after every ride...still need valves again.

In all reality, I could probably get one more ride out of the current valves (if I wanted to adjust them back to speck), but the nitrate coating on the valves is gone...so it's only a matter of time.

Another tax return spent on my dirt bike...the wife is going to be pissed!

newman...that is f'ing sick. keep us up to date.

my last 450 went 200 hours no problems, simple oil and air filter changes. i literally beat the crap out of it constantly on the rev limiter. hoping my new 450 goes the same length of time.

looking around for a cheap 125 right now. just fun to ride. any 96 or newer yz125 will do the trick for me.

That is sweet then. I have heard it is around $500-$1000 to set up a CRF250 frame for a CR500 motor. Look forward to pics of the finished product.

$1600 in 4+ years? That's 2 top ends a year on a 2T, so not too bad. How many hours will you go before doing a top end on a 2T?

BTW you might want to check that top end this go around too and plan on replacing it.

Right but I live in Utah, and only ride from about March/April, to Sept/Oct....so even when I was racing motocross (and single and riding almost every day) on two strokes, I only did one top end a year...

the trail riding I do now, I could probably go at least two summers-maybe 3-on a top end (with regular maintanence)...when I only ride three - four days per MONTH (I hate working).

And I'm going to let them look at the top end...and if they need to do that, my bill will go from $1000 all the way probably $2000 or so...This isn't going to be pretty.

I hear ya. A top end kit, pistons, gaskets and everything is only $140 - $150 and they can do it when they are in there so not too much labor should be extra. Don't let them screw you over.

Im still on a 250 two stroke. Ive ridden plenty of 250f's and 450's, but I have more fun on the two stroke. Plus I like the sound. I have no problem with tractors, just not my thing.
I came back a year ago and will NEVER ride a 4 stroke again....after picking up my01 RM250 I rode it once and got an 06RM250 I couldn't be happier riding these bikes I grew up on 2 strokes and I am excitied to be riding them again I felt like I was in a coma while on the 4 stroke and awakened the day I rode a 250 2 stroke again. For those of that grew up learning and riding then there is no better way to go ....also the things FlaNard mentioned too....

I'm so jealous! Back in the day, I race an 80,81,82 and 83 YZ250 and the 81 was my absolute favorite. Great job on the restore!

I am selling my 06 CRF450R and plan on racing the 2002 CR500AF I bought in October. I race the 40+ B class here in the NW and wanted to do something a little different this year. I'd heard so much about the CR500AFs that I wanted to try it. Picked it up for $3600 plus shipping. It has an FMF Knarly pipe, Boyesen reeds, flywheel weight, Rekluse Z Start Pro, brand new matching Dunlops, Pro Tapers, Pro Motion suspension with 5.6 titanium spring on the shock, and the complete One Industries David Bailey retro plastic and graphics kit on it. Should be good!

Dang...I need one of those ignition covers for mine....

Oh yea, thread topic. We've got two YZ125's in addition to the AF500. There's an 05 CR125 on the workstand right now waiting on the motor to get back rebuilt as a 134cc.

I've come back.

17:1 compression, ported, port matched cases, billet crank, billet port matched intake, modded 36mm Mikuni with custom billet slide, custom built airbox, pipe built for the motor mods, PVL ignition and modded tranny with correctly spaced and backcut gears. Properly jetted with 116 octane Sunoco and Bel-Ray H1R at 50:1, it is a thing of beauty! For a non reed valved 2 smoke, this thing absolutely rips.

Little bit show.........

Whole lot of go...........

I want to get a new YZ125. My friend has an 06 and that bike is a lot of fun. And I want to get one before they stop making them. It would be cool to get one the last year of production and just keep it mint as a collector type item.

anyone else have the same problem? top end rebuilds under 300(AU) does sound alot better
I have both a smoker and a stroker. I switched from a KX250 a few years back to a CRF450. Rode it about a year (didn't care for it much) then sold it and bought a YZ250. Best bike I have ever had - best decision I ever made. Love it. I also have a CRF250. I like the CRF250 at the track and LOVE the YZ250 in the desert. The YZ is fun at the track too, but its harder to ride at the track.
