WOW, what an experience! As someone who wasn't much of a runner just a few years ago, it's been a weird transition to even consider running a marathon.
What I Learned
- We're stronger than we think we are
- When we tell ourselves we're not something, we bring that thought to life.
-.i.e "I'm not a runner", say that enough and it'll be true. Stop saying and it and you might just become something you didn't think you could.
I wrote an article on my substack if you're interested. If not, thats ok too.
What have you learned about yourself while doing something you didn't expect you'd be doing?!?!
Congrats! Sounds like a big accomplishment.

Congratulations, only 1% of the population has ever ran a marathon. What a big accomplishment.
This rings home a little. I have a buddy that always made fun of me for jogging. Not once or twice, all the time. I used to jog like crazy, nearly everyday. He worked out like a madman, curls for girls type and training for college wrestling. He became a blackbelt in Jiu Jitsu and now trains for that. But around last May one of our other buddies bet him he couldn't run a marathon if he had to. So they picked one and he trained all summer for it. He completed it last month and now he is training to beat his time as the last 6 miles fell on him hard and he lost his pace.
Its funny how things change. He wasn't a runner in the least and just yesterday I drove past him and honked as he was jogging in the snow. I had to laugh and mumble to myself, fucking stupid lol.
Congrats, 26.2 miles is no joke. The training needed for that distance is a major accomplishment for anyone.
Congratulations that's a great accomplishment. I don't think I could go 26 miles on my feet if I had to, not in one sitting anyway, maybe over 2 or 3 days. I rode my emtb 12 miles yesterday and was winded af. lol. Nice job I bet it feels good !

I raced in three leadville 100 mt bike races.
The course takes you across the top of the Rockies. 13,000 at the halfway point.
The weekend preceding the race they hold the leadville trail 100 running race on the same course.
Those guys who finish, or even enter, are badass.
Used to be able to throw down a cycling century without any problem.
But couldn't run 1/4 mile, even if someone was chasing me.
Congrats.
Congrats! I ran a road marathon a few years ago followed by 2 50k trail races. Crazy once you finish.
That wobbly giraffe leg feeling when you stop running is WEIRD!!!! I dropped something about 300 ft after the finish line and I had to have someone pick it up for me. I started to bend over and realized if I went one inch further, I'd be on my face. CRAZIEST FEELING!
And thanks for all the words y'all! I NEVER thought I would run a marathon, but here I am.
I've already been asked to run this one and this one with other friends now. I've said no, because the training was tough. it was 2 months of my life (should have been 3) toward that one goal. I really want to race the BJEC series next year, so Im' putting my focus there. Series kicks off last weekend of January in West Texas!
One of our high school buddies from San Clemente really got hooked on running. Used to surf and skateboard with Dean. He's an animal !

Dang, that's really cool. I do love a good trail run, much more fun than the road (unless it's an open highway). I do believe a few offroad running events could be in my future. I'm an Enduro racer at heart, so make sense.
The things you learn about yourself when you’re pushing the envelope are quite amazing.
Very stoked for you and what you’ve accomplished.
Congrats on your marathon man. That’s awesome. That’s also quite the accomplishment.
Have you ever given consideration to a Spartan race? My cousin and, I had plans to do one in 2024 when it came to the PNW. Unfortunately, after my shoulder injury, I’m unable to. Most guys from what I’ve seen who do well, are runners.
Regarding your question, one thing I learned about myself when doing something I didn’t see myself doing. I learned not to put things off when I could be bettering myself now. I got so far out of shape and, realized I needed to lose weight. I had tons on gym equipment just collecting dust but, always had the excuse, I’m too tired. I don’t have time.
After finally getting started, I looked forward to it each day. I managed to drop from 258ish down to, 195lbs. I got my bench up to 345lbs. When I thought I was in the best shape of my life, I was 27 and, my max bench was 240lbs. I’m 46 now.
I also learned our bodies are made to adapt to the stresses we subject ourselves to. Results don’t lie.
Once again, congratulations.
Congrats- now you can put a 26.2 sticker on the back of your Subaru..
in all seriousness, I can’t run, it’s a huge accomplishment!
Congrats man! Did my first full marathon in October. Made a half-ass shot at a sub-4:00, did the first half in 1:50 but my legs completely blew up with cramps at the 16 mile mark. Had to walk-run-walk-run it in for a 4:40 finish. Better than a DNF!
What kind of shoes did you run it in? For mine I bought some Adidas Adios Pro 3 with the carbon rods in the midsole and man, the energy return with each step is insane. Almost feels like cheating with how much bounce they have!
Congrats man. Who knew running could be so addicting and fun 😂 It’s still fun to compete and race.
I started a little over a year ago and down to a 1:24 half marathon going for a full in the spring.
Yeah, I probably could have run a "faster" marathon, but I really wanted to just feel it out. Now I know, with that amount of training, I can do what I did. If I step it up, and do some more speed work, I can get faster.
Personally, I think for that amount of effort and time on my feet, I'd rather run a 50K ultra somewhere with epic views over pavment and Dallas.
I ran in Newton Kismets. I got the recommendation from a running friend of mine. I really like them, though I think for my next pair I'm going to go another 1/2 size up. They say on their site to order a half-size up, which I did (I'm a 10, ordered 10.5). I feel the pad they have under the shoe still fit in a 'low' spot. Maybe an 11 is what I need/ I'm also going to try the Distance modeal, not the Kismet.
Though I'm no pro marathoner, my recommendation is to not immediately think your can double your half marathon into a full marathon pace. It's more miles, more time on your feet, and more of a mental strain. I would pick that pace as your training pace when not doing zone 2 base, but also not hold yourself to that standard if it's just not in the cards during that training cycle.
Also, GOOD LUCK!
Congratulations man. I've heard the first is the most difficult. Hope you can confirm that soon.
