Will Stewart ever regret this SX only contract

Edited Date/Time 1/27/2012 6:07pm
Seems like this SX only stuff might actually be a bad idea for SX/MX riders at the top of their game. I'm not sure, but taking the entire Summer off from racing Outdoors seems like it would be a Disadvantage for the up-coming SX season that starts in January. You can train your ass off as much as you want, but nothing prepares you like Seat and Racing time on a Dirtbike. I think James Stewart is eventually going to regret this SX Only Contract he signed, because he's been Pro now since 2002 and should probably have a lot more AMA titles than he's gotten. I know at one time, he talked about beating all the records, but now you hear nothing about that. Supercross is cool, but nothing really beats the Outdoors in my humble opinion, it's where we all learn to ride and it just seems like racing Motocross bikes should be. James Stewart is one of the fastest riders we've ever seen, but it's a shame he chooses to not race the Nationals and I think he's cheating himself. Maybe all that fame and money is making him lazy and that's more important to him then the Legacy he leaves behind. Just seems like a terrible waste of Talent for what usually is a short lived career at the top of your game.

How did racing the outdoor series work out for Chad.

Was he at the top of his game at A 1?

Yep, they sure do.
Heard it from LB's & James own mouth in the past.
Something along the lines of...
"I think by a rider not racing both series it will prolong their career"

They have to "think" it because I'm sure they don't have a crystal ball.

I think back to all the Greats in the past and it seems like most of them loved racing the AMA Outdoor National series and would never think about a SX only career, they just loved to race all year, while they were in Top form. I agree, it's a shame Bubba ain't out there bangin bars with these young kids, but to each their own. I guess the only ones who really get cheated are the Fans who want to see the best riders line up at the gate at Hangtown in May. Smile

I don't agree.

You and others care more about the outdoors than most of the pro level riders do. Almost all of those guys on the gate have been racing every weekend since they were very young kids.

They enjoy every minute they have off.

I'm pretty sure he has more money than any rider before and definitly after him for a VERY long time...did you see the new MTV cribs episode of his place and all his cars?

I made a comment about this in another post ...the only rider to pull it off and still dominate was MC I can't think of another rider that going SX only has increased their speed and winning ratio please correct me if I'm wrong. I think it is not only slowing him down but it is killing his confidence and like it was mentioned above training and racing are 2 different things and when you take off that much time and try to race with younger riders that have been riding both series they seem to keep their speed, mojo and confidence for the next year, yes I know James is hurt but riders in the top of the class that ride both are catching up to his speed ....IMO

I hope he gets back to dooing both because I really do think it is causing him to go backwards a little from not being there and racing ....hopefully he realizes this and comes outdoors to play

Other than all the championships that he's won...

Regretting a SX-only contract? When his career is over would be the appropriate time to ask that question. Now? Everything posted here is just speculation.

Things are very different today. The riders of the past didn't start out with at such an intense level of racing when they were so young.

It was less of a job and more just for fun back then.

Not so today.

LarryB Extending JS's Career?

So a while back I posted that LarryB was working on killing outdoor motocross. He posted back saying I was way off track and he wanted Stewart to stay out of outdoor motocross to extend his career. So put him in the x-games on concrete? Stewart got hurt there before he even got to race! Now he's off to a really bad start to the 2010 SX Series making some serious mistakes and you know he's got to be hurt. It got me to thinking. Did Stewart not racing the Outdoor Series hurt him as far as being able to ride at that pace around other racers? Not that I have ever ridden at that level but wouldn't it be wise to maybe re-think the SX only strategy and maybe race some of the outdoor series for 2010 just to stay in racing form? Maybe go ahead and race the whole outdoor series? What do you think LB? I just wonder, is James thinking for himself at this point in his career or what/who? If asked, I wonder what he really wants to do at this point in his career, besides win the 2010 SX Championship. I wonder if he's thought, man I should of raced the outdoors?

Guessing what anyone thinks or does is always speculation. That said if stewy wants to be considered the GOAT he will have to win Both! Greatest in SX maybe, but so far not even close in either one. I think what most of us relate to is MX since we can all ride it.
Great racing is what I'm interested in, any form.
If at the very least you gotta admit stewy hangs it out, almost all the time!

Don't get me wrong , i completely understand where you are coming from Jmar. One thing though is this : Most guys that get to the top ( besides guys like KW and Mike L ) usually have a 10 year window. After that time expires , they start dealing with new "up and coming" riders.

A racers life should be lived hard and fast i think. Use that 10 year window to win anything and everything while you are on top of your game. Prolonging your career won't mean anything if you can't run the pace any more.

I also think , that when you take time off from the outdoors , you start to diminish your speed a little over time. There is a lot of money and championships guys like Stewart are missing out on.

Reed : I think knows his career has only a couple more years left. I think that is why he is racing all year long , stacking up the bank account. A couple more years ( mark my words) Stewart and Reed both will be fighting to even get on the box.

It happens in this sport , just like any other sport. The young guys replace the older guys. It's sad , but it happenes.

The outdoor series is not just less appealing to the riders, it's less appealing to the OEMs, private team owners and sponsors. I know some of you don't agree with that but it's reality.

The season needs to be shorter. Not just for the health of the riders but also for economic purposes for the teams. I don't care if they cut races out of both series and combine them but it needs to be shorter.

If not the outdoors series will lose more and more riders and teams every year.

Couldn't have been better said. 10 years in this sport is a long time and if you're at the top of your game, win as MUCH!!! and as many TITLES as you can in those 10 years. Who gives a crap about extending your career, if not racing MX is going to make you less prepared for SX than the rest of the riders who did, what's the use, plus it might shorten his career if it causes him to crash and get hurt by being off the bike to long. The ultimate goal is the Title and gettin on the box as much as possible.

I agree with what you are saying about the window but racing outdoors isn't a big help when it comes to racing the supercross series.

Reed was struggling before he got hurt and if your logic were correct he would have come in firing on all cylinders.

Time off let's these guys heal up.

Reed had a mechanical at A1 when the spokes got ripped out of his front wheel and then broke his hand in a freak accident. He was prepared, just unfortunate circumstances that messed up his season. I think racing both series keeps a rider in racing form and it's not such a hard adjustment getting back into it. Think about it, the SX series ends in May, that's 7 months of not racing until A1. I think if Stewart proves SX only hinders his chances of winning the AMA SX title, because he didn't race outdoors, more riders will continue to race the outdoors, just to keep in Form. Anyways! it doesn't matter, there will always be Outdoor motocross, the Purists will never let it die. Outdoor MX is ALL Natural, SX is Artificial.

Purist don't pay the bills and if the series is going to continue something is going to have to change. Like I said, cut out some races from each series and combine it into one series. That might be a tough sell because no one really makes money on the outdoors and the sponsors don't get much bang for their buck.

As far as Reed. It came right out of the horses mouth that they were having some issues. His times were off and he really didn't look very good.

If a guy has more money than he can spend in 10 lifetimes, what is the purpose of extending a career? Not more money. Not more outdoor championships.....soooo what....more supercross wins and titles?

This is a young man's sport--Kevin Windham notwithstanding. In my opinion, Stewart made a mistake by listening to Brooks' pitch on the indoor only crap. He's lost an enomous amount of of respect from a lot of fans. Not all of em, but a lot of em.

And in the end, going supercross only at such a young age may have added more tarnish to his legacy than all the supercross wins in the world can restore.

I think this is true because even if he spends the entire 7 months off training and riding for SX he only rides with a few riders on his track not a full gate with some that want need and try to keep him form passing. He may be able to smoke anyone that he practices with but it's a select few he rides with and they are friends of his hence riding at his place. He doesn't have to deal with the 20 plus riders on the track when practicing and I think it will dull his razor sharp skills over time.

I can be the fastest person at a track laptime wise when nobody is around but throw 20 riders in the mix and not only do I have to be fast but I have to learn how to deal with traffic, lappers etc that are not my friends.....you can only keep that fresh from racing them

And thats another point ....RC (just used him for example there are others) raced for legacy and the money came but he truly wanted to win more so than making the bucks...the money came with the wins. I don't think James is all about just the money I just think it's a 60/40 thing he still has the pride to win but it appears to be at 40% while the money is at 60%. James still has the pride and desire to win is more than some riders that I won't mention that were looking to "Get Paid" for all the hard work they put in to get to that level

From a marketing perspective, the numbers of fans that follow this sport are very small in general and those who care if James runs the outdoors are even smaller. What you need to understand is that those small numbers are not going to affect Red Bull or the San Manuel Indian Tribe and their casinos. And forget about Yamaha because they don't fund these race programs to sell YZ 450s. They fund these programs to name brand in general and selling some bikes in the process just sweetens the deal. The same goes for Rockstar, Makita, Geico and Monster.

Reality is that from a marketing perspective, it really doesn't matter what your or I think.

If Larry Brooks is trying to get rid of Professional Outdoor MX, then he's a traitor to the sport and I don't blame people for not liking him. If this was to ever happen, which I know it won't, it would be a sad day. Think of it, no more Hot Summer days, eating Hamburgers, Drinking Beer, watching Girls in Bikinis and the fastest Pro's running two 30 min plus 2 lap motos in the 250 and 450 class, if that ever happened, 2012 truly would be the End.
