Float Height images combined for Reddit.png?VersionId=Dh8O0VxOKk0extHq

First two images shows the original stock float height, direct from the factory. Third image is how much I had to bend the tab to set it to 8mm.

(It's at about 45 degree, float just lightly touching the back of the needle spring plunger. One image may look like it's vertical, it's not, that's just the camera angle)

Seller never rode or wrenched it, complete stock, sat in garage with original dealer gas for two years. I changed the gas out and it would idle rich almost no matter how much I adjust the air screw. Took carburetor apart to clean everything, pilot jet was definitely clogged somewhat. Float needle, seat and o-ring were working, no leaks, but after I took them out, they had some corrosion that I was unable to clean completely, so I replaced the float needle, seat and o-ring with OEM parts. Since I had it opened, checked the float height, it was 6mm. JD Jetting told me all Mikuni TMX38 should be 8.7mm +- 1mm, late models approx 8mm, but they kept stating 8mm, they also stated the accuracy is the same with either float height or fuel level check.

I adjusted the float height to 8mm, the float adjustment tab had to be bent up quite a bit, compared to the usual levelness. My question is, can or it is not uncommon the factory be that much off for whatever reason?

You state 45 deg, but the pics appear the carb is completely inverted?   Anyway, if you're doing it correct, then it is what it is.  You have to bend it to where you get the correct height.

So how did it run after you got it back together?

It definitely was at about 45 degree, float barely touching the needle spring plunger, I was holding it while my son helped take the pic, so the angle of the image may be deceptive. It's just that almost everything I've read or watched, stating that typically, the tab is usually fairly level, kinda unbelievable that the factory is that much off.

Not yet, soon. I was like, damn, that's quite a bit of bending to get to 8mm. If it's supposed to be at 8mm and the factory had it at 6mm, smh. I heard from some that the float typically come set high/rich from the factory 🤷

best way to check it is to hook a hose to the inlet and blow through with your mouth while working the float to see exactly where it shuts off.

jd jetting says it comes at 6mm from factory, should be at 8mm. it was hard finding what the float height should be, since from whatever year, service manual stopped printing the float height and instead started using fuel level height. hope this helps those who are looking for this info.
