Barbara Lee and her supporters are upset because they feel it should have been her. I agree with Newsom that he shouldn’t appoint someone who has already started their senate campaign. It would give them a leg up. He should not have said he will appoint a black woman to the senate. He should have just done so and said she’s the right person for the job. Preemptively saying what race and sex of a person you will appoint just cheapens the entire process and allows critics low hanging fruit.
