2023 YZ250F sucked sand

As the title says, 2023 YZ250F sucked sand.  New cylinder, piston, and intake valves needed.  Has anyone else had this happen? I clean the filter after every ride, still using the stock filter.  I use PJ1 spray on filter oil.  I’ve been cleaning filters for 20+ years and never had this happen.  Any tips or tricks with the Yamaha’s, first new Yamaha I’ve owned.  Expensive lesson.

Applied waterproof grease on filter sealing surface? That sucks. I use PJ1 as well and have for 20 years.

Sure did.  21 hours on the bike, what really sucks is I have the no toil power flow kit sitting in a box in the garage.  Never got around to installing it, I feel it would have saved me.  I think the filter moves at high rpm, and being in Florida I’m surrounded by sand.

I had same problem on a '23 YZ125 a few weeks ago.  My problem was caused by a pre-oiled filter I bought that wasn't manufactured properly (in my opinion).  The oil wasn't distributed evenly, and all of the sand came through in a small area of the filter which lacked sufficient quantity of oil to catch the sand.

Live and learn - no more pre-oiled filters for me.

Did you figure out where the sand got in?

I have ridden sand all my life…I have seen pre oiled filters I would never use for the sand. I use the tub of filter oil method,  soak to completely saturate the filter, then gently wring out the excess filter oil. Did the sand pass right through the filter or the sealing area? If it’s a really dry, fine sand, I Would use a pre filter or filter skin for added protection…

Install the no toil setup before you ride again, a must have on the 19-23 YZ250F's.

Yep, learned the hard way.  Went ahead and got one for my 22 450 as well.

One of the best investments I made for my 22' yz250f was the twin air powerflow kit. Its so much better than the stock setup as the filter actually screws down onto the intake instead just tabs holding it on like the stock setup, it seals much better in my opinion. I'd be willing to bet it didn't seal properly and that allowed the sand in. Another benefit is the twin air kit eliminates the backfire screen and that way you can get a shop vac down into the intake to clean up any excess dirt that fell in during a filter change. The added performance and throttle response is also nice!

No toil/twin air setup is must. No matter if its woods, pavement, sand, water, or whatever. Combined with a filter skin, its pretty much leak proof. I use Bel-Ray foam filter oil that I massage into the filter and on the filter skin. 80 hours on my 21 250 and the valves still look great. Sorry man, sucks big time im sure.

I buy a lot of those Maxima pre oiled filters and always reinstall my own oil

I should have the bike back by the end of the week.  Installing the No toil asap.  Just installed it on the 450.  Much better set up.  Still pissed, a lot of money.  Can only blame myself, but I’ve never had this happen on the dozens of other bikes I’ve had over the past 20 years.IMG 2609.jpeg?VersionId=ZJuPuijIIEjyBNXyrIiB1bHHk

I know I'll receive death threats for this but I would switch from the No Toil filter oil. Maxima, Twin Air, Belray, if you're riding sand.

The No toil hi flow cage kit works just fine, its plastic like every other bike cage.

I agree I have on in my bike. It's the oil that's an issue when riding sand or super dusty conditions. I learned the hard way.

I’ve used other oils (Belray, PJ1, etc) on no toil filters in the past.  Is that a no go?

Hes just referring to the oil for the filter not the filter itself. The filters are okay. Oil like belray is more sticky and thick than the no toil oil. Depending on how fine the sand is, consider filter skins.

I went with a low hour 22, wanted the same chassis as the 250f.  So far so good, just going to keep an eye on the filter lol.
