James has his "Roach" in his corner, trains like a MXer ..rides like a Champ...Hannah said it best back in the day, "I run 7 miles a day and ride 45 minn motos..I don't have to bench press a truck to be #1"

At 190lb I can throw my bike into the back of my truck but still ride like a blind fat girl.

I dig the Clubber reff! ! You been ducking me REED ! come on be a man! I train alone..
I am the Champ! ahhhhhhhh...

In 2009, I went to three races - the Hangtown National, the Millville National, and the MXoN in Italy, never saw the dude.

What's all the excitment about? Who is he again?

Interesting...I was just reading Jeff Spencer's article in MXA on top ten training mistakes, and he said low weights with a lot of reps is the worst way to do it.
Not that I am commenting on what James is doing. I would be interested to know what various trainers say about this. Jeff Ward said the same thing on Matthes podcast-- course his trainer was Spencer I believe.

Jeff Ward is my favorite rider and I believe that I read that he did heavy weights with low reps so that he had the strength to muscle the bike when he got into tough situations.

Either way, if those are 30 pound weights that's pretty heavy weight for a guy James's size to be pushing up with free weights. Strength and endurance is my bet.

Anyone do band training (with the tubes and thin elastic straps)? When coupled with weights, they provide a higher level of endurance and flexibility. For a good time, find someone with no band training experience and watch them go from "this is easy!" to eyes welling with tears in about 30 seconds...

My opinion, is that, a mix of some heavy compound movements, and lighter, core strength stuff (like the second pic) and, of course, cardio, would be optimal.

I too, would like to hear what various trainers say as well.

Heavy weights with low reps builds muscle mass.

Light weights with high reps builds endurance.

HI Joe Weider!

You don't think some strength would be good for professional racing?

I think around a 12-15 rep set of three will produce the optimum strength and endurance. Also My neighbor has been using a trainer and they do workouts in a circuit sort of way rotating constantly between excercises to creat a cardio aspect as well. Not sure if thats whats going on but you the balancing aspect on the bench is for core

Actually, you're incorrect, but, no matter... I was sort of kidding with my first comment about the 30's.

He looks very lean and mean, and that core strength training is definitely no joke. I'm sure he'll be ready.

He can be ready all he wants, but what happens after he crashes, and he's broken up for a few races?
