If they contacted you via VitalMX PM about "a buddy who has some parts available, e-mail them at ripmeoff@yaho0.com" it's probably a scam.  Most forums are eaten up with this BS now.

Otherwise, internet search on usernames/phone numbers/e-mail addresses.  See if there is any history there.

If they do not want to talk on the phone, that is a deal breaker for me.

You can learn quite abit about a seller just conversing over a simple call.

They just joined the forum and have no posts is another red flag.

If they don't want to accept PayPal goods & services, then don't send the money. A tough lesson that many of us have learned the hard way.

This exactly!!! I’ve had several very positive experiences right here on Vital with sellers and bought numerous things! As mentioned above, I wanna talk person/person and send a phone number, every single legit seller has called and we’ve had great rapport! Heck I even crossed paths with a couple of super great Dudes, that we ended up NOT arriving at a deal but NOT because they were sketchy in any way! (One deal fell through at the obscene expense for shipping, and frankly the other because I decided that I needed to hold tight on my end!) 😎 👍❗️

A guy from mx locker sent me a check to buy my bike. Asking 9500 he sent 13.5. Said it was for shipping. Wouldn’t talk on the phone. Tried to get me to send 1000 wired or Venmo to the shipper. Once they received it send the rest. I knew it was a scam I notified the bank and sure enough check acted like it was clearing but bounced after 3 days. While he’s texting me to send the shipper money. Joke

Use Google's image search capabilities, too, on any provided pics. This way you might pick up on the Seller trying to scam in multiple places and you'll be able to triangulate the SOB.

I just used reverse image searching to not get scammed on a couple of NASCAR diecasts. You just copy the pic address and use the reverse search feature on google and it will find any duplicates of the same picture online. The diecasts I were interested in were from a deleted eBay listing from two years ago. I got weirded out talking with the seller and I’m glad I double checked.

The same could be applicable for buying any bikes/parts/gear you don’t see in person.
