Photobucket" />Here is what my acl and meniscus surgery looks like after 5 days. Only two small holes and very little swelling. It has been one week today and I can pretty much walk on it with no pain for short distances.

I am assuming you had an allograft done, is that correct?

yeah, and then they took some cells from my arm and injected them into the graft to plump it up and help it take better. Or at least that is what I was told. Not sure if that is normal or what?

Be careful with that allograft. Every surgeon I spoke with about allografts said that just when you start feeling good and strong, about 3 months, the allograft is actually at it's weakest and it's easy to tear it. Apparently your body has to replace all the original donor's cells in the allograft with your own body's cells before it is strong again and this takes about six months.

yeah, but at three months your an idiot (or at least taking a big risk) to do anything serious with any type of acl surgery. Takes at least 5 months and you really aren't 100% for at least 7-8 months no matter what anyone says or how good it feels.

I had acl surgery five weeks ago and it still feels like it did before the operation, kinda a loose feeling. When does the knee start to feel normal again?

prozach:with the graft I had it holds strong enough to be back sooner than 6 months.. Typically 3-4 months is average for the contralateral graft. It's a divide and conquer theory, take the graft from the good knee, which weakens it and reconstruct the bad leg but still keep full strength in that leg. That way all you do is focus on swelling control and that = getting full range easier/faster. Instead of having all of the trauma on one knee you put some on the good knee which isn't bad, you still come out equal in the end as far as strength and range goes. The bone plugs wont pop out, the rate of reinjuring the acl is very low with the early return time. I'm at 6 weeks almost (xmas) and ran 2 miles yesterday. The doc told me once I build my running back up then I can start sprinting then following that is progressing back into riding. Once I go back on the 6th I can get a better estimation of when I can hop back on the bike.

Lookoutbelow: what exactly did you have done? just acl? patella, hamstring, cadaver? Does it feel like the joint is still loose or is it more of a muscle weakness?

prozach; i had a cadaver acl put in. My knee will like wobble when turning corners around the house and what not, and if it straightens out all the way it hurts like hell. Ive been doing PT for three weeks, I have seen a increse in the strength. My therapist said that I wear my cti everywhere i go cause i had some extra movement in the knee, which we are trying to tighten up. Some of the stories here have me worried cause Im nowhere near running or anything like that. thanks

Well you had a completely different surgery. The cadaver takes quite a bit more time to get back to sports related activities. And Make sure you keep straightening it out, thats one of the most important things. The graft will become a physical barrier if you dont get your 0degree extension plus whatever hyperextension you might have. I'm kinda concerned that your knee is wobbly you might want to have someone check that....

I have surgery in the morning and just always assumed I there wasnt a chance in hell I'd be getting a catheter but my sister who is an OT is saying I may need one and Im freaking a little.

Catheter for ACL replacement or nay?
(please say no)
That is looking very good, considering where you started. Glad to see it's on the mend.

Now get that sumbitch back in shape and get back out there riding!

Hey guys, going in this morning to have my ACL surgery!

I tore it 4 months ago at a local race. Thought it was just a bad sprain. Went to PT for a month and we thought it was pretty much near the end of it. Had an MRI just for ducks, turns out its a torn ACL and tears in both meniscus. Bummer.

I have been doing some easy riding for the last three months and I've had it go out twice so far so I'm excited to get that fixed. Got my CPM machine, brace and polar pack ready to go when I get home tonight.

I'll try and update when I can.

--Swizcore, that's nasty man! I hope your feeling better!

Not to keep bringing back an old thread, but I thought I might update on my situation...

Got lucky! Doc didn't have to touch my meniscus (one healed, the other one is almost there) so it was just a pretty standard ACL...

Its been a week and a half since surgery and I can walk with my brace locked and one crutch now. Been using the CPM about 6 hours a day each day and doing my exercises 3 times a day. Started physical therapy and will be going twice a week for 4 weeks. Everything seems to be going pretty good, knock on wood.

Hope everyone else's is going well.

Continued good progress.

Scrub those loose areas with a rag in the shower and work to get the "scabs" off. They'll heal better/smoother if you do.

Good thing you're not a cyclist or a crossdresser.....those knee's would be tough to shave now!

Yeah, I just noticed today that some of the hair is starting to grow back, I was wondering if it would. Im glad you said that about the scabs, I've just been waiting for them to fall off. Once that last little area of the large grafted area closes up I can finally stop wrapping it. Those Adaptic layers are expensive when you change it daily.

PT is going great still, my therapist calls me the machine because I just come in and do all my therapy one thing after another with only a couple check ups with him during the sessions unless he has a new addition to my program.

Its getting strong and I have good flexion though obviously at 2 months post-op it still gets tight and sore pretty fast.

This is gonna be my last photo update to this thread. Had to end it with a semi-normal looking photo.
