I need to start teaching my son how to drive here real soon. What techniques and/or methods did any of you use...or your parents use? I really can't remember what my ole man used to teach me since it was last century.
Then it was in the field.
Then it was old dirt roads.
Good luck!
and why would you be surprised...i have a PHD in that sorta thing.

My son that races, is pretty good at backing up the trailer.
The whole key is seat time, the more he drives the better he will do.
I put Ryan through that Drivers Edge program and he learned a ton not to mention the videos and 911 tapes of real accidents that teens were in opened his eye's to reality.
Pit Row
I had a beater Mazda 626, that we used. She could never get the clutch/throttle modulation down. Finally just had her hold the throttle halfway down and dump the clutch. Then we progressed backwards with lower and lower throttle settings, and slower and slower clutch release.
That was 10 years ago. But she has perfected her technique ,and does some killer burnouts for a chick.
We had driver training in school but what really taught me was driving my brother in laws Dodge Duster around the pasture and later my Dad's Lincoln Town car around LA.
Don't yell, it don't help.
We go out one day to an industrial park and he finds a spot where he can set these things up and teach me. He must have spent a whole day putting the pylons together and finding a secluded spot.
So he sets up the pylons and tells me that it's a really tight fit, but you better be able to squeeze it in there if you want to pass the test. While he's walking back into an area where he says I'll be able to see him in the mirror I just backed the car right into the spot. The car was 3/4 parked by the time he turned around.
He walks back up to the window and says "pop the trunk, we're going home". Tosses the pylons into the trunk, climbs in the passenger seat and off we went. Lesson over.
