Yep, 03 was a monster. I bought one in 03 and was going to set the world on fire. The bike more/less took me for a ride instead of the other way around. What's funny is I was going to go open class but decided to get a 250 so it would be easier to ride. Guess I didn't do my research before my purchase. Damn I miss that bike though, one fas MOFO.

Another thought: It had a 10HP jump, almost straight-up on the dyno right around 6K.

mY buddy had an 03 .....only got to ride it up and down the street ....WOW the thing felt like it had the power of a 500cc two stroke! It was badass for sure! Put that engine in an AF conversion and go race it!

I had a 2003 also,it was a sucky powerband,The 2002 was better,I got rid of the 03 after one season and got a 2004,they made the 04 alot more ridable,A big problem i had with the 03 was the steel clutch plates would break alot,I was always taking the clutch apart it inspect the plates,They never beefed up the clutch to handle the extra power.

I have an '02 that I still intend to turn into a woods bike some day. Great bike, very fast.

According to MXA that's exactly what the '02 was, an enduro bike. Too slow reving, too softly suspended, too wide in the mid section, too weak in the brake dept,,,,, Unfortunately, the '03 was too fast, too stiff, too skinny and, the brakes were too strong. True story.

SXS's are semi-works bikes KTM would sell to the public in Europe. We could buy some of the parts seperately over here. I'm not sure if they still make them or not.

You're confusing the '01 and '02. I had both, the '01 was what you describe, the '02 was very fast - not quite as fast as an '03, but close. The '02 was about 3 HP lower than the '03. but better in the middle. I think most guys liked the '02 powerband better.

I rode my '02 for about a year and then got my first CR500AF, and, although my 500 was obviously faster, it wasn't THAT much faster, the biggest difference was the huge 500 midrange. My '02 250SX had similar power, but only at optimum RPM.

Correctomundo. They had better WP-forks coated and all, different shock, different frame, engine mods with sxs exhaust, engine mods, hinson clutch, different ignition, carbon stuff. It still exist here, you can buy the 09 sxs250. The 02/03 costed about twice as much as the sx version...

I have heard some speak about their sxs125 and they said they felt really special, but where a nightmare to maintain.

I'm not confused, only paraphrasing mxa. Look back at the shootouts. I ain't sayin' they're right, just that, that is what they said.

My '03 was my first 250, coming off of a sweet (and what I found out later to be a just-right-for-me bike) '01 200EXC. I can personally attest to the HP claims like many others have.

Bike and lack of a budget to convert it made me mostly a track/mx guy for 3 years. Spent about $1k in trying to get the suspension right and was waaay too twitchy for in the woods. I sufficed but I would definetly like to own one someday down the road to tell the tale of that bike. Bike bucked me right on my head on a roughed up lip, cracked a collarbone. Man, what a bike.

MXA dynoed the 02 at 49.9 HP and the 03 was stronger yet. That was with a ambient temp. of 90deg. Google is your friend.

46hp...not 55hp.
I had an 01, it was supposed to just crack 50 hp. 02 was a little mellowed out, then 03 was a monster.

What is the easiest way to tone down an 09 KTM 250SX. I'm a fossil who is trying to learn to ride this thing after being on a yz250f for the past 5 years. Should I set the power valve late in the band, early, leave it alone, gear differently, different pipe?

You have forgotten how to ride a two stroke. Ride it some more and it will come back to you. But if you really must "tame" it down put a flywheel weight in it from stealy off road. It is the easiest cheapest way to go. It does not take power away but smooths out what is there makes it rev a little slower. Give them a call and tell them what you are after and they will help you figure out how much weight you want.

Flywheel weight, green pv spring, soft ignition setting (unplug wire), g2 throttle cam...those are some things I've heard of people doing.
