What does a bike have to cost for you to just say no. Are we getting near that limit? I'm sure it's already stopping new people from getting in the sport. What is the cost that will drive you out?

I won't cross $6000.00. Most I ever paid was $5100.00 total.

With the deals out there for new 09's that dealers are trying to get off the showroom floors, I dont know why anyone would wait and spend thousands more or a new 2010 Dizzy

I scored a new 02 YZ250F when they first hit floors and took it up the tailpipe out the door. Never again. My buddy scored a new 06 CRF450 when they first came out for like $6800 OTD. I went to the same shop 5 months later and scored the same bike for $5900 OTD.

The prices are crazy. I bought at least one new bike every year from 1989-2002. once they started getting over 5 grand I couldnt swing it anymore. Now I look for good used bikes.

We bought a well-kept, lightly used 09 KX450 for $4500. 00 in the summer.

My thoughts are that it's really NOT that people object so much to

paying 7$ grand for a new machine, it's more the projected

expensive rebuilds that makes folks shudder.

really wanted a 2010 and was willing to pay, but bought a brand new 09 for $3979 OTD last weekend. can't justify a 10 for that. BTW both were YZ250F's

I am planning on a 2010 450F in the next month or so. I am curious to see what the 2010 YZ450F is going to sell for first.....
I am pretty sure my new bike will be a 2010 KX450F....... but Im holding out another month to see what happens with the YZ.
I wont be spending no $7000+ though..

Oh come on guys... what you will pay of course depends on your income level. This is not a poor mans sport if you must have the newest and the best every time it comes out. I have spent 14,000 dollars on my bikes just this year!!! Two brand new ones, a KX450F and a 2010 KTM.

On the lighter side of things.... The big companies probably need to come out with some plan to keep the "regular joe" riding!!! Lets face it, its rare that we make enough money to buy bikes all the time.... and as we all know money comes as easy as it goes.

Bottom line.... WAKE THE F&*% up bike companies.... MAKE QUALITY PRODUCTS THAT ARE NEW AT $5000 bucks so people can afford to buy at least once every two years. I fear with the Obamaconomy this sport is going to disappear, as you can already see with major sponsors dropping left and right out of major championships.

AND.... oh yeah... has anyone else noticed the failing dealerships??? In a 5 mile radius from my home in Ohio.... in the last two weeks 3 motorcycle dealerships have closed their doors forever!!!! WTF!!!!!!!

Here is another tidbit for you guys looking....

Check out ebaymotors.... and search for bikes being sold in Massilon, Ohio by a shop called J and J Cycle.

I have bought three motorcycles from these guys.... all of their 09's are going out the door at 65% original cost.... like the 4K 250KX's, and not to mention... I know for a fact there is a KX450F (Green) 2009 selling for way under a normal price.

And another place in Ohio, is Roush Motorsports.... word on the street is they are soon to go out of business and THEY ARE A HUGE DEALERSHIP.. something like 450 bikes on the floor!!!!!! KTMs, Kawi, Suzis, Hondas... the works. Keep your eyes open.. the deals are there!!!

And they have on ebay...

YZ250 - 4699K 2009
YZ450 - 4699K 2009

These guys will deal with you as well..... That is not the final price.... and half of their stuff isnt listed. Ask them to tell you whats on the floor. And even better.... ask for "Chad" and tell him Matt sent you.... He is a deal worker trust me

I stopped buying new bikes when they hit $5500.00. All of them are only worth about 4k i after you ride them for a year.

i bought a 08 leftover yz450 over the summer for 4900 otd .. I saw a 2009 yz125 sitting on the floor and asked how much since that was my favorite bike growing up.. they said 5100. Couldn't believe they ask that much for a 125.

My plan has always been to buy current year bikes and ride them for 1-2 years and then sell them while they still look decent and have some life left in them.

I have owned about 40 dirt bikes since 1973. I am 48 years old and have been riding since a kid.

I have only bought 6 brand new dirt bikes bikes in my lifetime, A 1977 RM 125A, a 1978 KX250, a 1980 CR 250, a 1996 XR 250, a 2003 CRF 450R, a 2004 CRF 250R. All the others have been 4- 6 months old.

This year I bought a used 2009 CRF 450R in July for $4500.00 and it's a beauty, and I really enjoy it. 6 months earlier others paid $8000 to $10,000 for the same bike. I can understand their choices. I almost did it, but chose to wait.

When I look back, once the thing is in my garage, I quickly forget what I paid for it.............

A new bike with that new bike smell is nice, but there's always that period of "Fuck a scratch!!!!!!!!!!!! " that you don't have to deal with when you buy one that is a few months old.

Bikes like the new Yamaha tend to lure me in except it's the wrong color! If I can be cool on the trick new bike for 4-6 months, that's worth the depreciation hit!

Dollar wise, I'd say if its hot & sexy, I'll take the hit and buy a new one, if not, I'll buy a 4-6 month old used bike and dodge the depreciation.

I figure if the bike costs me about $1000 year, I am doing well. Not bad when you look at it that way.

Sure, some years I ride for free, but some years it cost me $3000!

Either way, it's the best damn value out there when it comes to smiles per $!

So to answer the question, it's sort of like real estate. As long as you stay in the game, the price of the bike isn't that big of a deal ( within reason).

I can understand how some might feel it is getting too expensive, but that is only if you want the latest greatest.

You can buy a decent older 250 F or 450F for $1500 and it is 10 times the bike we had 10 years ago.

We really are fortunate to have so many choices for bikes that are damn good. at decent prices.

Or a HONDA that is great! ; - )

RIDE THE DAMN THING and enjoy life !
