The list is already pretty long but can you guys fill-in, it's about mostly pro riders. But the deaths are about more than just the pro's. Donny Zundorf was a little fast and promising kid who broke his C0 and C1 and one of those where unstable. He crashed, got up and the vertebrae moved. He collapsed and died two days later. Jesus Barragan is the brother of Jonathan.
It is a weird request but I promise it will help a good cause.
My buddy broke his c5-c7 on Father’s Day. MRI(I think it was) showed no damage to spinal cord. He is currently a paraplegic. Doctors cant see why at this point as nothing is displaced.
I could be mistaken on the terminology but definitely correct on the concept.
Does he have any swelling inside his spinal cord? Because that can block transition of the signals of the nerves too.

In 2005 when I was 18, I broke my C-5 vertebrae. I was numb and fully paralyzed from the chest down. I was diagnosed as a complete quadriplegic at C-5. I had C 4-6 fused. After my surgery, I was able to get a signal to a toe and move it ever so slightly. I was able to get signals to all my extremities over the course of a few months while in rehab. I spent 4 months in an inpatient rehab facility and worked all those slight movements into bigger movements. I was able to walk out of the rehab facility, but had to continue using a chair. I spent about a year in an outpatient facility where I progressed from a power chair, to a manual chair, to a walker, to a cane, to eventually nothing.
It’s been almost 18 years now and most people can’t tell I’ve had a spinal cord injury. I’m still very numb from the chest down, have limited shoulder mobility, and my hands/wrists are weak. My upper body was affected more than my legs. I am able to ride mountain bikes at a relatively high level. I live in Colorado and do a lot of big mountain riding. I just had a baby boy 6 months ago (wasn’t sure that would work for several years). Even though I am very fortunate, lucky, whatever you want to call it…there has not been a single day that I am not reminded that I had a catastrophic injury.

It is a tough road, I was paralyzed in 2020 and I have recently gotten some feeling back in my legs. Vibrations, things to that affect. Just hoping things unitive and stem cell can eventually be afforded.

Nic Hayes crashed over the weekend fracturing C6-C7. Currently has no function of upper or lower extremities...
Button, much the same as me walks but is far from "full mobility". Very lucky though to be on our feet.
Was there that night of the accident. To see you become an elite cyclist is amazing. Way to never give up and not settle for anything except greatness 💪

GP riders Michael Sandner and Marcel Stauffer are fighting their way back. Michi is already on the bike again, for Marcel there's a long road ahead of him.
Marko Kovalainen, didn't regain mobility and is paralyzed from the waist down.
He is doing pretty good these days as far as I'm aware and is into handbike racing.

This story warms my heart. My 15yr old son sustained the exact same injury in feb this year. Shattered C5, fractured C6 and now has a full fusion of the C4,5 and 6. He had movement of his left ring finger first, then down to his toes and then eventually some movement in all extremities and can now get around on crutches but has long days in the chair when required.
Reading your story gives us hope that he may recover even more over the next few years as hes young and fit and has an amazing attitude.

Crazy, I didn’t know he was from puyallup. I remember when he passed and seeing a bunch of the Brandon Layton art work he made on the internet. Wish I had started racing before 99 we had some fast kids in the late to mid 90s coming out of here.
Both frenchmen Mathias Bellino (former MX rider and ISDE world champ) and Fred Guérin (former SX rider and French and US supermoto 250 Champ) come to mind, both in wheelchairs.
Hearing of riders (or anyone for the matter) that suffer paralyses saddens me, our bodies nerves are amazing things, I had a bone (broke fib & tib) go through the nerve running to my left foot, it gave me drop-foot, I tried & tried to be able to lift my foot, but no, my surgeon said that I should get movement in 3 months, not wanting to stand still, I made a heal-toe gearlever for my GSXR1000 and raced at Phillip Island, 3 months to the day I got 1mm of movement, 1 year later it's perfect.
A young friend of mine went over the bars of his KTM 125, he is now paralyzed from the neck down, a number of years have passed but no improvement.
I have a dislodged disc in-between my C5/C6, gives me numb arms from time to time, hearing these stories makes me back-off a little when riding.
I wish there was more advancement in the area, I feel so helpless, I wish I could do more to help those that suffer.

I’m glad I can offer some inspiration. Check your DM. I sent my email if you want to talk more. I know every injury is different but I can at least share some insight from my experience.
Early 2016 looped out hard on a jump face. Legs didn't work immediately after. Pulled myself off of the track with my elbows. Sensation returned after a few minutes and was able to walk, extremely painfully. Wound up with five broken ribs, collapsed lung, leaky spleen, compression fractures of T6 & T10, and, the big one, burst fracture L2. 12 hour surgery to patch me up. L1-L3 fusion with dog bones and cage. Other than immediately after the crash I never lost much motor control. But I do still suffer from Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES), which just means I have some sensation deficits and, for a year and a half after, couldn't pee on my own. (Yep. Catheter. <cringe>
. That came back 545 days post op. Never thought I'd be telling everyone that pissed all over the bathroom looking for high fives. Still have some sensation deficits in my right leg/foot. Motor control is fine. Not really limited activity-wise. No more track time though. Dual sport now.
Every spinal cord injury (SCI) is different. My injury is similar to others which haven't regained any function, or very limited function. Most people see me when I go to races and think everything is OK, but have no idea the day to day issues, and pain that goes along with this. You wouldn’t wish this on you worst enemy. The other thing about it, not only does your regular everyday function of walking, moving, and going to the bathroom get affected, but your sympathetic nervous system is normal shot. I know mine is, and I am impacted by temperature, humidity, etc. It's certainly the injury that keeps punching you in the face year after year. I'm grateful for what I have and have regained but it is not an easy situation.
