Got any scars on your right calf from that pipe?

The pipes aren't the problem.

It's the kick starter when you do it wrong.

Like showing off for your buddies and try starting it in hiking boots.

We were riding at my friend's family ranch, and a friend of his older brother kept asking to ride it. I let him try finally. He had on Converse High Tops.

Half assed kick, and I had no idea he was so flexible. I think he my have kicked him self in the back of the head.

His shoe sole flew off like a wounded mallard.

Guess he decided to not ride it that day.

It was an 84, not an 87, but I'm sure they were similar enough.

84 was noted to be a real challenge, but they had to some extent changed that by 87.  I never had a problem starting my 88 if I followed the ritual, which definitely included being booted.

I don't recall what the pipe configuration was pre 87, but that sucker on the 87-88 bikes would roast your right leg when moving forward for left turns.  I'd get quarter sized blisters and still have the scars.  Maybe it was less of an issue for shorter riders whose boots come up closer the knee (6'2" here).  The low boy pipe must have been a godsend.

Hahahaha!

Yeah, never rode anything later than the 84. I didn't realize that you had the "T-shirt".

My routine cold on the 84 was: Gas on, put it in 3rd, rock it back and forth vigorously, find N, choke on, then kick it like it punched your girlfriend.

After warm... N, then kick it like it punched your girlfriend.

I’d buy it a drink if it punched my EX-girlfriend…

It would like that too because it wouldn't go a 50 miler without a drink.

I have a bike not even 1/4 as cool, that I don’t even ride. I would keep it whether you ride it or just look at it. Anytime I’ve even considered selling mine, I just sit on it and remember why I like it so much

Don't even want to tell anyone what I did with my 84.

I was down on my luck, laid off, nobody needed a toolmaker. Life was getting real. Needed money for my mortgage and electricity and stuff.

I sold it for a song ti this idiot biker down the street. Gave them 2 tutorials on how to start it. One day I drive home and see some younger dude pounding on it.

I grab a boot and walk down to help.

It has no gas...

A week later the guy who bought it let his buddy ride it and he hit a house, mangled everything, and he wanted the same price to buy it back.

Ugh...

That's about 12-15 feet down from there at the ranch.

And keep your goggle strap placement to yourself, ride with a round helmet through cedar trees and see what YOU end up looking like.

Had a couple '84 models. Loved a lot about them but they had their quirks.

Had to run 2 head gaskets to drop the compression enough to start it and keep it from pinging itself to death.

The cylinder metallurgy was lacking, as the head studs would pull out and had to be re-installed with Time-Serts.

The mounting holes on the frame for the Pro-Link pull rod would oval out and the shock bodies would bell-out from wear (pre hard anodizing days).

But they were light, mechanically simple, torquey, handled well and were drop-dead gorgeous.

Just checked out that link for bring a trailer, that damn 87 500 sold for $17,500, Jesus! I didn't realize these bikes were almost worth their weight in gold.   I changed out the original side panels on mine to save um as well as the pipe, handlebars, foot pegs, Magura hydraulic clutch, new tires to make it more comfortable to ride, but other than that it's unrestored and all original.  Makes me wonder what it would go for.

I say you take BBA up on his offer. Vintage racing is no fun. No pressure, riders laughing while riding. Often the turns are difficult as everybody is politely not block passing. There will be a few future Factory racers out there. But they chill after a  few incidents. Reality is Monday morning you can go to the office (do folks really do that anymore?) and say something like this. I went to an AHRMA national and won! There were over 750 riders there! What I may omit is the obscure class I rode and the fact that I was the only one in the class. Being old one tends to forget a few of those minor details!

I have had hundreds of bikes and no of the "profits" from them reside in my paltry bank account. But I still recall several I wish I could get back!

BBA, I will need a kickback)

Suddenly I dont feel bad about buying another bike
