I was originally looking at the ktm xcw's to make street legal, some trails I ride on need licensed vehicles. It looks like you can make them street legal with some work. But, I have been told yamaha suspension is way better than ktms. I am considering used considering the prices of bikes today. Is the lectron carb worth it? I have seen a couple of used ones with them on there?
My previous bikes were a klx300, and a couple kx250's. So I am familiar with the two stroke power.
I have an 2018 yz250x I got new, At the time I was coming off a 2013 350 xc. I liked the power of the 350 but I was wanting to go back to 2 stoke as I had been on 4 strokes for years.
The suspension was a big plus to me as I had had good luck with KYB on previous yzfs I had in the past and the '13 WP stuff I never could get right. That being said I think the newer KTM suspenion is alot better now than the '13 that I was coming off of. I ride a lot of offroad yet still do some moto (vet class) and this bike seems to do both pretty well. I just changed the springs for my weight and the valving is pretty good stock for what I am doing .
I have the Lectron carb that you mentioned but I don't think it is a necessity. I like not having to change the jetting for cold weather riding or when I take a trip out west and ride at higher elevation, but I think when the stock carb is jetted right it runs slightly better/pull harder than with the Lectron. I think the biggest performance difference I felt was when I installed a different head that had the squish corrected. I have an Apex but there are a couple companies that make ones for it. I was able to dial in the jetting alot easier and it ran better through out when I changed the head.
If you do some research there is a lot of information out there on these bikes for getting them dialed in. Also another benefit of this bike is that there are a lot of parts available for it and reasonably cheap as almost all of the parts interchange with the yz250 of the last 20 years. Hope this helps
The nice things about the YZ is once you get the stock carb dialed you very rarely have to change jetting. depending where your located i can give you what we use. we only change main jet if were going to race the sand.
parts are easy to get and very reasonable price oem part and rebuild kits from the oem.
very solid bike and best suspension stock on the market.
That's what I was wondering. I am looking at one with the lectron carb, and for my riding it might be good enough. The ktm's I was looking at was 18 and earlier so yeah, I am not sure how much better the suspension really is. Plus most of them were asking 1000 to 2000 above book, where the yamaha's are running lower or close to book...
Yeah, I am at about 6500 ft above sea level, and it varies up and down from there. Right now, I am debating whether to try for new or see if I can get a deal on used. The advantage of new is I know what work has or has not been done and set thing up my way the advantage of used is that I can save some money. I have been told yamaha suspension is way better then ktm's suspension. I was thinking of street legaling it for some trails, but I can do that down the road if needed/wanted then... I also heard smart carbs are way better then lectron. But that could be application or bike wise also...
