Got ya. I'll weigh mine when I pull it, along with the stock one & with the stealthy. IIRC the GYTR is more mass externally located so it will weigh less but yet have an effect of a heavier weight. I forget exactly the deal with those.

It is going to be a while before I hit the dyno. Lots of life stuff going on right now...

I tried to weigh my stock yz125 flywheel vs the stock yz250 flywheel, and see how much difference there was, but my digi scale is dead, but I did have a 6oz flywheel weight that screwed into the yz125 flywheel, and weighing between the two just by hand feel, swapping both flywheels in my hands each from left to right to left to right to left to right over and over again, and I did get the sensation that the 6oz flywheel weight on the yz125 was marginally heavier, like, may be a few grams. But for sure, you are dead right about the gyt’r done 8oz flywheel utilizes it’s weight much more efficiently than the 11oz, but as far as feel goes. The 11oz definitely feels like it slowed things down just a bit more, I figured the 9oz wouldn’t even be noticiable between it and the gyt’r flywheel, but the 11 definitely slowed things down a lot, that sensation did go away once I installed the teeny little side solenoid jet, down to 40 from the stock 50, and no more oil build up on the silencer end cap, it ran somewhat lean with the 42 pilot, and needle in the 3rd clip, but not to the point it was lean spiking like crazy out of gear, had to order a 45, as the temps have gone colder at home, and it idled really high and lean spiked like a bastard at even the slightest touch of the throttle. So 45 pilot and needle in the 4th clip, here we come, and that should get it back to proper fuel delivery.

To say the least, shit is messed right up, don’t know what is up, but it seems like everybody is going through some form of crap at this point, and it all happened at once, for everybody too, like BANG, BAD NEWS FOR ERRBODY.

But from every pile of crap, comes a shiny peanut, so I’m hoping this bowl of shitty-O’s has something good that comes from it, loosing my company to Covid was a super bad thing, but I’m hoping it will finally give me the freedom to look past the next nightmare job, and get into something better, and that gives me the ability to get back into racing again, and not train my ass off only to leave town for a job on race day like my job has done to me the last 10 years.

So I hope things work themselves out on both our ends of the stick. Nice to hear from you, as always cdoggy, keep the rubber side down!!

As does my 96 CR125...........

Depends on the bike. With my son's we ran pretty close to suggested I believe one clip leaner on needle. We are running a GYTR flywheel weight to make the power even more tractable. For the other one that made it come on so strong he felt it would too much power for track conditions so I swapped out his 7.0 slide for s 6.5. That seemed to mellow out the midrange hit and make it more linear. I was limited to what we had to work with as were at track with no access to any more parts than what I had with me. I think the flywheel weight with more aggressive power curve is the way to go. He is running a YZX gearset in his other bike and Swapped the STIC over to it since then Says it's even better. He was able to not shift near as much than without it....was going to buy a 450 to be competitive but now is staying on the YZ......

Ridden 2 strokes since I started riding, and it was only recently I tried a 450, I don’t see the advantage to them, they are worse handling machines, and their cornering ability is hindered by their weight, but that weight helps carry lower speeds to clear the same jumps. It’s interesting that switching slides from 7 to 6.5 gave easier mid. Do think it was due to the increase low end from the richer slide? Before power valve governor mods, I did run a 5.5 slide in my 06 yz250, took time to jet for it, but it did add a lot of low end power off idle, and the throttle response was excessively snappy. But the pv governor trick adds so much more power than a slide could ever do, so the stock 7 slide for the yz works well enough, due to the added bottom to mid transition being so much stronger. Thanks for the information, and I guess I can’t just write off a stic metering block just yet, but thinking it would be the best idea to send my carb to dicks for the 38-40 taper bore, as i have come to the conclusion that a 38mm carb is just too small to take advantage of the displacement of the 250, if a 125 comes stock with a 38, and it doesn’t really cause much of a loss in low end vs a 36mm carb, then a 250 2 stroke could definitely benefit from a larger carburetor bore.

I'm in the process of building up my long term YZ250 project, I'm not interested in a fire breather and top end power is not what I'm chasing, rather smooth tractable power like a four stroke. Coming off a TC250 where its possible to make it a flat track screamer or a smooth club day track bike with a power valve spring change, flicking the standard ignition switch between normal and aggressive and changing the silencer from an R304 to a Powercore 2.1, that bike had a lot of aftermarket stuff on it and honestly the V-Force 4 made the least difference and was only on there as the 18's had a problem with the stock cage.

So what I'm saying is this bike will be practically modified, I wasn't really even thinking of getting an aftermarket reed valve for it but if the stock one can be made better than I'm interested to see, not that I am working to a budget but after throwing the catalogue at a few bikes in the past I kind of wonder who I am fooling sometimes.

The only porting I am planning on is cleaning up the casting flaws and case matching the cylinder while I have it totally stripped down, maybe even port match the exhaust port to the pipe as I think that's just a given now that I have see the ones in this thread.

Hey, as for the reed block, I removed the whole intake from the bike and bolted the intake flange, and reed block together with the stuffer in, and removed the reeds from the block, then either with a dremel, which I used this round, (first one I did was with small files and took a long time) Then scribe the outline of the intake flange into the white plastic reed block stuffer, and remove the material to make a matched surface. with the dremel I was able to
Leave the whole intake together, but with the small files I kept having to split the two parts to get any work done.
It sucks that this is an actual flaw from the factory, it’s such an easy one to remedy, but yet still exists.

And for the silencer, however much you remove from
The outer body of the sielncer, comes off of the perforated core as well, I didn’t shorten much, just a couple inches removed to get it down a bit. I shortened the aluminum outer canister to 10 3/4” leaving a bit of a shelf beyond the 2nd mounting bracket, for room to have the rivets, as there will be 2 different sets of rivets used to secure the the bent end, and the silencer end cap. A bit of filing will be needed to remove some of the mounting bracket weld that extends past the actual bracket itself, and it’s only to get the profile down to match it to the rest of the canister, as there will be a rivet in that exact spot. I need to take another picture or two for the details, but I’ll get those pictures posted in the next few hours, once I decide to head outside into this fine Irish weather we have been experiencing for the last 3 weeks!

So with cutting the stock silencer down to shorten it, the aluminum body at the top needs to be shortened to 10 3/4” from 14 1/4”

The 10 3/4” is needed to get everything back together after drilling holes for rivets without modifying the mounting bracket, to make the end caps work. The top brackets weld needs to be smoothed out and matched to the profile of the canister body to drill holes for rivets.

The top image shows the weld that needs to be filed down for the top rivet, there is only 1/2 of material left beyond the top mounting bracket

Awesome cheers for the info, I had an idea that what it involved, its pretty crazy to see the ammount of overlap thats in the first part of the intake.

It’s pretty silly to be blunt, that a company like Yamaha is okay with letting it slide, but I guess there’s still suckers like me that will buy them, but none the less, the stock yz reed block is still a vastly better unit than what comes with a ktm 2 stroke! Zero reed gaps in the yz250 reed block, but there’s units being sold by ktm that have bunk reed blocks from the get go, and that’s an even bigger joke.

What do we think of this? (see highlighted grey) I will be running a Lectron on mine, This is off their website. Curious to see what you guys think about removing the spacer, I remember seeing somewhere that running without it the reed cage covers the ports up too much? Think its an issue?

The spacer makes better power on the dyno. I’ve always thought it was more to do with clearing the ports than changing the intake track length. I know lectron does a lot of dyno work but I’m struggling with that statement.
My cynical side wants to call bs and say it’s just an excuse to cover for removing the spacer to make their carb fit.
Best bang for the buck I’ve found is run the spacer with Boyesen pro series reeds and blue printed reed cage and stuffer.

Okay, so to shorten the silencer body to 10 3/4”, there is a bit of trimming on the top bracket to do, in order to clear the first set of big rivets, my appologies, it’s been a while since I did the shortening to my friends, and just saw it yesterday, so I just wanted to make that correction to what actually has to happen to make work.

Also pretty interesting that the reed block spacer makes more power, does the spacer make more power everywhere, or is a trade off between top and bottom with/without the spacer?

It's pretty much across the board. It wasn't a lot, but it was noticeable.

Like many things, there are those who will debate that and those who will agree. I saw, so I believe.

BAHAHAHAHAHAH!!! I kinda want it just to hear what it sounds like, oh Lordy that’s bad! Ten bucks says it’s house insulated!! I will snap a picture of a front master cylinder piston I pulled out of a bike I bought off of someone I considered a friend, he told me the front brake was spongy, and needed to be bled, well.... he kinda installed the new seals on backwards, and made an effective brake fluid removal pump instead

Is it welded back together? How are you suppose to rebuild it?

I remember watching a vid on youtube of JS7 on a YZ250 rippin, he had a PC silencer with only 1 mount like the 125.

So after reading this whole thread I'm still a bit confused on what is the best pv combo. I bought four yzx washers and a yzx spring to go on my 04 YZ250 project, but am now wondering what combo will give me the broadest, smoothest power delivery.

While I'm at it, may as well ask about jetting. Deviation from stock includes Rad Valve, cylinder and head worked over by Tom Morgan for broad, smooth power, and a GYTR flywheel on order. Currently have a PC pipe and shorty, but will likely pick up a Buds Racing (HGS) pipe and one of their long style silencers. 100LL AvGas with Maxima K2 at 32:1.

I appreciate the advice.

For the YZ you need to keep the two 1mm washers toward the ball ramp the same or your linkage will drop and put excessive pre-load on the spring. You won't like the power and your linkage arm won't like the excess load.

After the collar on the spring side you can run either thickness of washer and one or two of them to tune the power. I normally set them all up with one 1mm washer. If you want to run two then I'd go with the .8mm "X" washers and you will basically have the same as a stock "X" model. If you want to be like an "X" with the mod then go with one .8mm washer.

The thing to remember is that the "X" also has a different CDI, lower compression, raised exhaust port and center power valve. Your YZ won't run just like an "X" with the PV spring mod only. The CDI and lower compression are the other two big factors in the combo. to making a YZ run more like an "X".

Well said, people need to stop thinking that a yz can just magically be turned into an “X” with a flick of some shims, spring, and ignition, exhaust port shape, and pv resting height put major differences between the two and how they both lay power down. For the pv setup, I have not tried the x spring out, and I doubt I will, as the yz spring is softer through its entire travel, and the only real advantage the x spring gives, is 2mm less preload, which removing one 1mm shim, and replacing another 1mm shim with a 0.8, makes 1.2mm of removed spring tension, and as mr.Robinson said, using four 0.8mm washers will only apply more spring tension once the actuator arm gets mounted and bolted to the power valve Main shaft, so keep the 2 washers closest to the ramp 1mm’s, and I know this for a fact, as I tried it with all four 0.8mm washers, and wasn’t overly happy with the results, I was not a fan of the extra spring tension moving the arm up to meet the shaft put back on the governor spring. Now, I’ve even gone as far as to pull the stock yz250 pv spring, grab one of my very fine grit grinding stones, and I proceeded to grind off 0.5mm or material from the actual spring itself, so I’ve got to the point of 1.7mm of removed spring tension, some people may think “ohh that’s too much” but no, it isnt, it was entirely rewarding, and it made the power come on even sooner, and smoother than it did with just the washers can do on their own, and I still plan on getting a yzx main power valve for and matching my cylinder to it when I port.

For the jets...... touchy subject lol, it’s a bit of a feel game once you change things around, when my yz was stock, stock pipe, with the opened up stock silencer, matched stock reed block, and the pv governor spring tension change, I was at a 180 main, stock needle 4th clip, 45 pilot(50 stock) , and 40 solenoid boost jet, (also 50 stock) and it ran very well, with no lean bog, all I did was throw a hygge pipe on it, and bang, sent my jetting for an absolute shit. Dropped the pilot cuz it wouldn’t come on pipe nicely, helped, but ran really lean off idle, so after that, the bike still wouldn’t come on pipe well, so I changed the solenoid jet from a 40 To a 35, that helped greatly, but really aggravated the lean issue right off idle with the 42 pilot, so I lowered the needle one clip to the 3rd position, and put a 45 pilot in, that helped the whole situation, and now my bike runs awesome..... till I port it, then it’s back to trouble shooting again, but shows just how much one thing can throw off your tune. Some people will give you a jetting spec that works for them and their mods, skill, and weight, and just doesn’t work out for others, I’ve had to rejet pretty much every bike I have sold in the last 5 years, guys can’t hold it on; or they aren’t in my weight range, and things need to change due to the demand, the rider puts on the bike.

With the governor out, take a look at how the entire setup works together, where the thrust washers, and needle bearings are located.

Apply pressure on the ball ramp, to compress the spring, and remove the retaining pin so the entire assembly can come apart.






Once apart, splay the washers and bearings out in order, that they come apart, even use a parts diagram to assure yourself if anything happens.


In the next photo, I’ve placed the two 0.8mm washers under the two 1mm washers they will be replacing, and remembers it’s only x2 0.8mm shims, that will be used, with the 4th washer closest to the pv spring, being completely removed from the assembly, so only 3 washers will be re-installed.


Time to re-assemble, you will see my finger pointing out the 0.8mm washers under the stock 1mm washers in the pictures, leave the 1mm washer closest to ball ramp in its place, then place the thrust bearing itself on, then a 0.8mm washer, followed by the spacer.





Once the spacer is installed, place the second 0.8mm washer ontop, followed by the second thrust bearing, but no washer after that, simply replace the spring collar overtop of the thrust bearing, and prep to assemble the spring, the gear shaft, and ball ramp apparatus.





Place the spring on the gear shaft, and slide the thrust bearing assembly ontop, followed by the ball ramp.
Compress the spring to fit the locking pin into the gear shaft, and line up the groove for the locking pin, and release tension. Governor assembly is complete, and all parts are ready to re-assemble.




Overall, pretty easy to accomplish, and for the added power below peak hp/tq will be noticeable, it’s almost like it pulls the way it should right from idle to red line, and your clutch is probably going to thank you for the less abuse you need to put on it to make the bike come to life.

Now for the jetting, ideally, the boost jet would be the guy to tackle, but, I didn’t have the proper size, only a #35, so I combated this issue by cutting the pilot size down to a 42, my needle clip was raised 1 position from the 2nd to the 3rd clip, as the off idle performance was a weee bit lean with the 42 pilot, and I’d get a lean spike almost right away, if I had my choice, I would be using a #7 slide, in conjunction with a 45 pilot, and 45 boost jet, so I had to compromise. I will be changing the jets again shortly, but due to not having a boost jet to replace the stock with, I opted for the leaner pilot, this gave a lot of added snap right off bottom, but due to the boost jet, I’ve got oil build up coming out of my silencer, it runs well, strong, no hesitation hiccups, or bogs, too much fuel is still though. my mods so far consist of the stock reed block, matched to the intake block(kinda pathetic Yamaha, simple fix for more power), as well as another no brainer, removing the restrictor from the stock silencer, but that’s it. Beyond that it’s an entirely stock 21 YZ250 with an 11oz fww and a iridium 8 heat range plug for purchased upgrades.

While We’re here, the stock YZ250 silencer is possibly the most overlooked piece of the bike, in 2011 it’s perforated core size was increased from 26mm id to 30mm id piping, the bent section between the silencer body, and exhaust pipe didn’t change, but what this has done is moved the pressure purging point sooner in the exhaust tract, thus allowing for much more exhaust flow, and by simply taking a dremel and grinding away at the two fusion welds holding the baffle at the tip of the silencer, and removing the baffle entirely will give you a completely uncorked silencer, that will our perform just about any aftermarket silencer I have come across, fmf, pc, dr.d, bills, all use the same 26mm Id perf core. here’s the example, had my 2015 yz’s silencer still kicking around, so luckily me, my 21 silencer is still pristine, and waiting to be shortened and uncorked.



Wasn’t in the topic, but meh, it’s another cheap but affective mod, same with the stock reed block, can be done in only a matter of hours with a bit of dremel, file, and sand paper work. Simple, cheap power. Minus the cost of my dremel, the three mods will cost you under 50 northern pesos to complete. so anyone on a a tight budget looking for better power delivery, everything is listed is right up your alley, and entirely attainable, and zero internal work is required, these mods may not be for errbody, but for you older vet and trail riders, it will be a very welcomed addition as the bike will lug better than it ever has before, Smoother easier to use and less abrupt power delivery, it will carry 3rd way easier in low speed sections, and you won’t need to coax it to life as much with a stab-o-da-clutch. Well, this alll looks so freakin huge from my iphones tiny screen, so I felt like iv just published a small novel, but on a computer screen, it won’t have nearly the awe lol Wink hope this helps, and remember, not for errbody. I got very good results, but there will be some people for sure that will say “I’d never recommend this mod” and that’s perfectly fine, to each their own. This is for the people who are looking to change the power delivery and are dedicated to the old school blue bomber.

Again, I hope this info is well received, and to anyone who is willing to try it out, I wish you luck Smile and hope to hear back with your input, good or bad. As well, I only posted my findings, and what I feel ACTUALLY WORKS, and if I did have any negative affects from this, I wouldn’t have come forth with the info, and would have simply returned things to how they were.

Will the stock silencer mod work on an 07 with the same results?

Bringing this thread back from the dead, but I just saw that Yamaha has incorporated the PV mod into the '23 250X. The '23 now only has 3 shims in the PV governor and they are the same as the standard YZ. Not the .8mm that were used on the previous X's. It's basically the same as the diagram I posted above.

They also have a new needle profile with an NYxx series needle.

Nice find buddy!!! Appreciate you letting the YZ group know. 
Just to recap (& make sure I am understanding the modification correctly) removing one shim or coming new with 3 shims reduces the tension needed to activate the power valves so they open sooner which then lessens the hit of the power band correct?

Yeah, that's pretty much correct.

The idea was to hold the PV from opening until a little higher in the RPM range to smooth the power, but it really just sort of kills it, IMO.

Removing one washer enhances the smooth delivery, removes the dead spot and lets it rev out like it should. Some guys say the power delivery feels more like a four stroke. It's very linear, but full.

Ah, got ya. Thanks buddy. I can’t remember if you have the std yz250 or the yz250x. Have you done the mod? I’m waiting for a trued & balanced crank to come back from Tom Morgan so when that arrives I’ll crack it open & probably do this as well.
