My tire spoon bent like a noodle!

Edited Date/Time 1/26/2012 7:23pm
.
I bought me a bad ass Motion Pro spoon for fifteen bucks. I dug into the bead only to bend the damn spoon end 90 degrees. What do they use...pot metal? What a POS spoon. Plus I scrapped my knuckle on the sprocket. Then I called the shop and they want 15 dollars to change it! BS! I had a beer and watched TWMX tire changing video and realize I forgot to break the bead on BOTH sides. Beer and Youtube...mans best friend.

Do you have the rim locks loose, and the bead broke, do you have the wheel elevated so the tire isn't touching the table, and soap and water? i use little 10 inch tire irons no problem just get that wheel off the ground or atleast the part your working on. Good luck.

Put the tire out in the sun for a few hrs before mounting and it'll soften right up.

You need Metzeler tyre levers. Even a muppet can do a 10 min tyre change with them!

Maxxis is the worst. If it's a Maxxis I won't touch it.

All great ideas. Set the tire in the sun, use a bucket on something to get the tire waist high or a tire changing stand. Also make sure sprocket side is down so you don't bust your knuckles on it again. Soap and water works but I use simple green and water 50/50 solution Yes Maxxis are a bitch but not that bad. Good Luck.

Its probably Big task to attack that job and a real Trick to not get your Balls caught in the bead while they are hanging Out. So be careful man!

Same here. The first (and last) time I installed a Maxxis, I ended up snapping one of my tire irons in half.

15 bucks to put on a new tire's not a bad deal. Then again, I hate to put new tires so its money will spent.

I've heard the smaller the tire, the worse it is. My pitbike and my son's KLX both have 14 and 12 inch wheels. A buddy told me he gave up while trying to change a 10 inch CRF50 tire.

Last time I paid to have a tire changed they bent the shit out of my disc. Then they claim no way. Bullshit, it wasn't bent when I brought it to them. I put it on my swing arm and my caliper moved probably a quarter inch every rotation. It was bent so bad I couldn't ride with it. They said its a dirt bike, who knows when it was bent. bullshit, I don't care if it was a freakin moped, it wasn't bent when I brought it there. $15 install cost me over $200.00 when said and done and guess who I didn't buy the new caliper from.

My Motion Pro spoons work great - have used them with dozens of tire changes. It would take quite a bit of excess force to bend one - I certainly would be concerned with that amount of force when levering against my aluminum rim.

I have had the same made in Italy, Motorace tire irons for 25 years. They still work great. I had to change a tire last night. Did the whole thing off and back on the bike in less than 10 minutes.

I use the Motion Pro ones too, haven't had a problem and have changed probably 20 tires with them, maybe more. As far as Maxxis, I'm running an SI on back right now. So far so good. Didn't have an issue mounting either.

Here's the trick... Use soap and water (heavy on soap) to make the bead slippery. Helps for getting it on, and also helps set the bead when you air it up the first time.

I set the rim on an open bucket, so neither the rotor or the sprocket gets damaged.

Also, and I've seen a whole bunch of people struggle when not mounting the tire this way: Do not work against the rim lock! Start the mounting process at the rim lock. I seat about 3" on either side. From there, pick a side and work around the tire. The end goal is to have the last 1/4 of the job 90 degrees or so from the rim lock. if the rim lock's at 6 o'clock, your last bit to mount should be from 3 o'clock to 6 (saving the three inches or so I'll go past the rim lock with the initial mount).

If you do this, your tire will pop right on and you won't bend your tire irons. Putting the tire in the sun also helps alot, although I've done many changes in the winter too. The absolute worst thing you can do when mounting is have the last bit to pop on at 180 degrees from the rim lock. I watched a guy actually break the steel wire in his bead on a brand new MH3 by prying against the rim lock.

Good luck!

So you didn't break the bead all the way around and drop one side into the groove in the rim and you blame the spoon for bending? I'm surprised you didn't bend the shit out of your rim. Sounds like Motion Pro saved you a lot of money to me.

While Motion Pro makes many great specialty tools, their tire tools leave something to be desired. They will bend, and they're too pointed on the end and pinch tubes easier than rounded ones. Just my personal experience.

I think that you are talking about the standard levers. The Motion Pro spoons are some of the best.

Once a knuckle has been damaged it's best to scrap it. There are some that will claim that a damaged knuckle can be overhauled or rebuilt, but hauling it off to the appendage salvage yard is usually the best bet.

If you live in a shitty cold climate like Canada where there is sun only 1/2 hour per day you can throw the new tire on the floor of your truck by the heater vent and run the heater WFO for an hour or so. Environmentally friendly...not so much, but it works.

Or throw it in in empty garbage can with a hair drying running. Works great.
