Thinking of picking up some impact shorts to wear under pants. Looking at the Leatt 3DF 5.0 or Alpinestars Bionic Freeride. Anyone got first hand experience with these? I was leaning Leatt because of removable tailbone padding and CE level 1 rating but read that some found them to be delicate. The Astars look nice too though. Thoughts?

I just returned the Bionic ones I ordered as well as the 4.0. I’m going to try the 5.0’s, but it was stated in the as that the 4.0’s also had the removable tailbone piece which it did not. Overall, both felt good with the exception of the tailbone padding. My current under armour shorts are from A-Stars from quite a few years back and they had no tailbone protection. Didn’t realize that it would be so hard to find another set like them. I understand the reason for that tailbone padding to be there, but I can’t be the first one to think how uncomfortable it actually is.
Troy Lee 7605 for me. Been using them for years. No problems
I wear Pearl Izumi cycling shorts for the anti monkey butt padding, they work great. Are you looking for comfort or protection?
The Fox Titan ones work well, they have pretty large hip pads and have a big cycling style pad in the crotch which is great for woods riding when youre riding a long time and doing a lot of sitting. Also I dont have much of an ass so any undershorts with hip pads make my pants stay up better.

I returned the Alpine and kept the Leatt. Leatt is way better. I have a pair of the Leat 3.0’s too. They are good but 5.0 a tick better. Just about anything Leatt is good.
I have the Alpinestars shorts. I like them but haven’t tried on the Leatt. The fact that they have the tailbone protection via the actual hard plastic is the reason I purchased.
My only wish is sizing up. I’m a 31 waist & the small is too damn right. Oh well. Carry on
I run the 4.0 from Leatt. Used to just have some older fly ones that weren't much more than the removable pads in pants and sustained a pretty big hematoma in them so switched. I really like the leatt, even in the heat. I don't go commando in them but assume you could if wanted. I have been riding 2-3 days a week recently and wash them on delicate in the washer with my gear and hang dry and holding up just fine after about a year of use (3 months of heavy use this year so far).
I'm looking primarily for protection without being uncomfortable.
I ended up ordering the Leatt 5.0. Sounds like a good enough set. Greatly appreciate the help y'all.
Same…Started wearing these shorts after bruising my tailbone several years ago…they are very comfortable and provide great protection. Can’t ride without them ..
We have wore these in TLD for years. They seem to do the job. We’ve tried some others, but they are either too bulky or too “slick” inside of the pants I guess you could say. TLD grips the pants better IMO. Hope this helps.
Best I’ve ever worn were the KTM power wear. Unfortunately they are no longer available. Bought the Fox but can’t stand them. Wore them twice and never again. They are FAR too obtrusive in the crotch area. Literally go straight up your butt. No way anybody product tested these before being released. I had an old pair of EVS that were good also. Just enough padding where they were still comfortable. Can’t find the original EVS or KTM. Will probably try the TLD recommended in this post.
The reason I like Leatt is the thigh pads wrap around the front a little more than the rest. Frame on the inside of your thigh hurts, Leat offers more protection.
