Where did Dennis Mitchell, #8 from Canada, get those awesome handlebars? They must be 3.5 ft. wide. How much fun would it be to line up with those?

Imagine the whining you'd hear if today's riders had to ride a track like that.

i was at Hawkstone Park in 2003 for a round of the British Championships. not much has changed there since 1964. Same uphill and gnarly downhill, sandy sections and fans on the snowfence. they don't whine too much about the tracks in England.

You said it! Those bars were huge! Looks like a Texas Long Horn was the inspiration for that design! HAHA
I'm guessing they needed the leverage to move those bikes around. Seems a bit drastic though doesn't it?
We need some vintage guys to clue us in on the "long" and short of those bars from back in the day.

How about on the false start, that guy who pulled a U-ie (Ovia Luongo - I'm not even remotely close on the spelling I know... Wink )gets back to the gate, and I use the term loosely, and the race re starts while he's facing the wrong way! lol

As with everything else $$$ has reared it's ugly head in our sport as well. Imagine if that happened today!?!?!?! They would be in court fighting that out! hahhaahah

Another gem I enjoyed, was that Brauh Dirks (sp again...) was described by the announcer as "the giant farmer from Holland..."

I love this vintage stuff! Thanks for sharing this with us!

Yeah, I noticed that, and thought he was being penalized for jumping the start., by making him go around in circles.
