Every other western civilization has the same trappings of modern life, every country has mental health issues, so why is regular mass shootings in particular in schools uniquely a US problem?

most of what I read here is “it’s a mental health issue”

OK, so what needs to be done about mental health? And if it’s all about mental health, what do other western countries do so much better in that space?

I’m not too well versed in other countries medical situation so I can’t answer that. But do other countries hand out psych meds like it’s candy? Or put you on these meds as “trial and error” and act as though you’re a test dummy?

Here’s a kind of funny story I have about a friend of mine. (I’ll preface by saying I’m not opposed to marijuana legalization) He had pain in his balls for quite some time so he went to the doctor to see what was going on. The doctor didn’t know what the issue was so he prescribed him medical marijuana for the pain. So he’s telling me about this and I said “that’s great, but what was causing the ball pain?” He says “I don’t know. The doctor never ran any further tests”

That’s where we’re at right now. Our doctors prescribe medications to mask the actual problems rather than figuring out what’s wrong. I feel like it’s the exact same situation with mental health. They prescribe all these psych meds rather than having you talk to an actual therapist and getting to the root of the problem. We’re a lazy country as a whole and  rather than figuring things out, we cover them up.

How do we fix it? I'm not sure.  But taking my gun away , won't fix someone else's mental health issues.

That's an issue we all need to figure out , and answer too.

You guys want to punish other people, for someone else's crimes. You also want to pass the blame on to an inanimate object, that doesn't do anything.

Guns have been around for hundreds of years.  Guns didn't change..... people did.

who has said take away guns? Every anti-gun poster i've read has said make it harder to get guns

Did you guys know , that if I grabbed one of my guns and set it on a table , and never touched it.....it would never be blamed for killing anyone or anything.

Remove me from the room , and insert a crazy , murdering lunatic, that has intentions to kill people.....that gun would probably be blamed for killing someone.

Why would we blame the gun? It didn't do anything when I was standing in the room. What changed?

Did the gun all of a sudden become a mass murderer.....or was it the change of a human being standing in the room?

You don't change , fix or remove the gun......you change , fix or remove the bad person with ill intentions.  Removing the gun , will only let the bad guy pick up a chair and bash your skull in.

Or...... he'll just use someone else's gun. And I won't have a gun any more to protect myself. Makes total sense. 🙄

stop blaming fentanyl for deaths, a pill sitting on the counter un-bothered by anyone does no harm!

Fentanyl is an addictive drug that kills people. It's also killed 70,000 per year , and some of those deaths were caused by Fentanyl being maliciously infused into pills like fake Xanax.

Guns don't trick people , nor are they addictive, and they aren't being illegally brought into the country across the southern border!!!

Fentanyl has killed more people in this country in one year , that what guns have done here in violent crime.....in the past 100 years!!

There is not even a comparison here!

Well… it doesn’t harm anyone who doesn’t touch the fentynal. You can put a bag of fentynal right in front of me and I’m not going to die. Put it in front of an addict and they may overdose. Put a gun in front of a homicidal person then people will die 🤷‍♂️ I don’t understand why that’s difficult or what point you’re trying to make 😂 I feel like you’re arguing with yourself. No one here has said a person with known mental health issues should be allowed to have a gun.

in Texas, as long as im over 18 and dont have a criminal record, I can buy a gun. How does that address a mentally ill person getting a gun?

On your back ground check , if you had previous mental issues , it would show up.

Here in Oregon , it took me 3 months to get my new 12 gauge. A damn shotgun , took 3 months.

Dont try it, dont get addicted to it, dont take pills that dont belong to you and dont die from it.

fentanyl isnt the problem.

People take drugs because they are mentally ill.

People take drugs because they come from broken homes.

People take drugs because they dont believe in God

People take drugs because they see them in video games

People take drugs because its glorified in rap

People take drugs to look cool on social media.

We should fix all of those things, not the fentanly

But yet they can buy a rifle with no check whatsoever, regardless of your mental state.  The Pulse nightclub shooter was on the FBI TERROR WATCH LIST.  He couldn't buy a plane ticket but he could and did buy enough guns and ammo to kill 49 people in less than an hour.  But because we can't even put in place the most basic measures to make sure a nut job can't get a gun, we just send thoughts and prayers afterwards.

I think we all know how shitty the FBI is at doing their job sometimes. And we’re always going to have outliers. Most of the time the person is not on a watch list, doesn’t have a criminal history and hasn’t been involuntarily committed.

It’s a good question, and I am not sure if the rest of the west use those drugs to the same level.
I am guessing it’s not too different. But honestly have no idea.

Has there been a correlation between those that commit mass murder and use of psych drugs? Not doubting the claim, just not sure if that’s the case, and interested to see if there is any data either way. It does seem like something that needs to be studied if it has not been already.

I can only relay my personal experiences. In PA if you’ve been convicted of most misdemeanors or felonies or have been involuntarily committed then you can’t purchase a gun. And if you attempt to you will be denied and charged with falsifying official documents.

2F80DE1B-4AE3-4BC6-8F44-7D6C6CAF80F3I’ve found multiple articles not related to media outlets which state over 90% of mass shooters were on some kind of antidepressant or psych med. of course the media outlets deny this because their pockets are being lined by the pharmaceutical companies (much like the politicians)

Wouldn't it be wild if people taking these sorts of medicines were not allowed to buy guns

That’s a slippery slope. They seem to be beneficial for some, especially if the correct medication is provided. Like I said earlier, the issue is with doctors and their trial and error tests. They will prescribe a different psych medication monthly until they find one that works. Sometimes the first one works well for a certain person but other times it takes multiple different attempts.

im not saying I disagree, but I feel like if that was the case then we will have a ton of people refusing to be prescribed medication which may work for them. Maybe we need to get back to good old counseling and talking through our problems rather than trying to cover them up with medications…

How on earth would any of these media outlets have any access to medical records? Why have no parents sued pharm companies? Seems like if 90% of these shooters take the same drugs then why haven't the NRA been banging that drum for years now?

Was either of these shootings caused by psych meds?

Would either of these people been hurt if the shooters hadn't picked up a gun in a fit of paranoia?

Are these people mentally stable enough to own guns if this is how they use them?

There has been easy access to guns my entire life. And I’m old.

How do you explain that these mass shootings didn’t start back in the 50s or 60s?

It correlates with the advance in drugs (prescription and otherwise) and the downfall of the traditional family. I know there have been drugs that far back as well, but not the crap that’s out there now.

When God is asked “why didn’t you protect the children from Columbine and the other school shootings?” He answered “I’m not allowed in school anymore”.

We have a much larger problem than guns.

We have a Godless society problem.

I’m not sure if you realized your … umm … irony??? here in your statement. But anyway, 6 people, including 3 children, were murdered in a Christian school recently. They prayed every day in class and God was a huge part of their curriculum. He was definitely there in school and it didn’t matter.

Correlation? I have a correlation for you right here.

I don’t believe any single thing is a causation, just so we are clear. I truly believe we are in the perfect (or imperfect?) storm, with the internet, gun availability, advanced weaponry, and mental health all contributing to these awful tragedies. It’s something the Founders could have never foreseen. As I have stated before though, every other first world nation also deals with all those issues I stated, except one. Guns. And they don’t have mass shootings in their countries like we do. We can acknowledge how amazing the Founders were and also acknowledge they can’t see the future and they could have gotten some things wrong. Not only white male property owners can vote now, for instance, and slavery is no longer legal. I highly doubt they would want the 2A to be so absolute that we can’t put measures in place to drastically reduce the amount of horrible people getting their hands on a firearm.

Oooooh, you got me bad on… that one!

I admit, I paraphrased something I heard after Columbine, and yes, at least this last one was a Christian School. So in your mind that outlier defines them all.

if you don’t think the distancing from God and the moral decay that is happening in our country isn’t causing this, then I feel sorry for you.

Also, on your graphs, you need to add Columbine to the timeline. Those were two terribly sick kids, and  what they did created many copy cats.

And with what Boom brought up, do you not think as many kids could be killed with a machete in their classrooms?

Also, I can say that I wouldn’t be inconvenienced at all with a 2 week waiting period to buy a gun, besides having to make another trip to the gun store.

But waiting periods are what stops a “crime of passion”, like when a guy comes home to find his wife sleeping with the neighbor. It’s NOT going to stop someone who is planning to commit a mass shooting, at all.

We send our thoughts and prayers every time there’s a mass shooting and God isn’t listening. Because another one happens 2 weeks later.

Yes Columbine did happen during the assault weapons ban. We will never prevent every single mass shooting. But we have to strive to prevent as many as we can.

The wait period could cause the person to have a change of heart in that 2 weeks. At least 2 recent mass shootings were done within days of the purchase. Maybe they get caught doing another crime. Many things could happen. But we don’t have one so we will never know.

To much anarchy and law Enforcement has their hands tied. It appears that the scum of society has more rights.

Curfew? Sounds a lot like Martial Law. Pretty unAmerican. Very Communist.

Heck let’s just throw out the constitution and the bill of rights while we’re at it.

I can't speak on other states and how fast they process a person's records before buying a gun. Like I said earlier, it took me 3 months to get my new 12 gauge shotgun last year.

I'm just wondering why someone wouldn't want me to have my gun , because someone else shot up a place with their gun. It's a terrible thing to hear , and I'm sorry for that. Taking my guns , won't fix anything, except maybe your feelings?

It makes no sense , nor will it ever ....to disarm 99.999% of the population, because of one nut job.

Said it a million times and my mind will never change......fix people , guns don't need fixing.

For the last time, no one is saying take away all guns

make it harder to get guns is the message

if you can’t grasp that, there is nothing more to say

A ban and a confiscation is not discussed by anyone in politics right now. And if it is, it would never ever work. I’m not sure why so many people equate any legislation whatsoever with a confiscation and a ban.

We all go through strict airport security because of <1% of people who might do harm. We all understand that a reduced speed limit in a school zone or a residential street is kind of annoying for everyone, as is stopping when school buses load and unload. But we all do it because it makes our community safer.
