I remember there being something about the AMA making a rule to restrict frame polishing. But it never happened. I found this on racer-x . I remember seeing the original article and I thought I had heard something about it on Pulp at one point too.   

 

  We made a mistake! Yes, it sounds unbelievable, but it’s true. In Friday’s Racerhead, the first of 2010, our own David Pingree mentioned that the AMA is going to be cracking down on polishing frames in the 2010 season, because the teams were “polishing” enough material off of the frames that it was changing the rigidity characteristics of the frames, and thus the handling characteristics.

However, we got a note from the AMA’s Kevin Crowther indicating that this is not correct. He says they did look into cracking down on the practice, but in the end the rules were left as they are for 2010.

There's a possibility that metal characteristics of the Aluminum frame have been changed by heating and then cooling to give a softer and more flexible or harder feeling and then polished to hide any evidence that anything has been done.

There's a possibility that metal characteristics of the Aluminum frame have been changed by heating and then cooling to give a softer and more flexible or harder feeling and then polished to hide any evidence that anything has been done.

Annealing or changing the temper can change the hardness and the strength, but doesn't change the stiffness. So it wouldn't have any effect on the flex or feel. Plus the process doesn't discolor the aluminum or anything, so there wouldn't be a need for polishing to hide it.

2) Floating rear axles: There's nothing floating about it once you tighten the axle nut to spec.

3) Titanium vs Steel bolts for a different feel: Typically you hear about riders saying titanium is too stiff, yet titanium is actually half the stiffness of steel. Even if thickness is increased (in an axle for example), the part is usually far less stiff than steel part.

There are lots of other examples where people claim that knocking the sharp edges off a part change the feel, but it's such an insignificant change, there's no way anyone is noticing it. 

We've done testing where the rider ended up riding two identical sets of triple clamps, yet felt a difference because they were expecting to feel a difference... There's a huge mental aspect to this sport, which makes tuning and testing interesting at times!

I drew them a simple, but effective drawing to disprove their theory. None of them would have any part of it... Including some big name pros and their respective practice mechanics. 

That's a bunch of bs
