It's a sideshow, but cool we will be able to watch it.  None of the big players will be there unless something drastically changes and that won't be this year.  I predict it is done after this year as the ROI just is not going to be there IMO.

WSX have $65 million over 5 years to draw down and several SX friendly, untapped markets to exploit.

Their bums on seats exceeded 80,000 over the 2 Round World Championship last year.

Seeing you mentioned it, the thing that seems like 'drastically changing' is the US AMA Outdoors.

When you have many of the senior 450 riders openly saying the travel, and pay, versus the risk of Outdoors is hard to balance, and that WSX makes sense and is enjoyable. This, coupled with the obvious broadcast/streaming, and track attendance issues with MX, you wonder who is really looking ahead. Well, I do.

You obviously haven't been paying attention...AMA outdoors is part of the SMX series and will pay drastically more and are partners with SX on the TV streaming on Peacock...pretty sure that WSX doesn't have the $65M in the bank...they have an investor that says he is committed to the support of it but a lot has changed since that commitment...call me skeptical but I don't see WSX making it to year 5...

AMA outdoors will pay drastically more than what?

The winner will get drastically more. But the guys coming 16-20 in the 450s would be lucky to be earning $500 more for a weekend.

Some1 like mcelrath would be earning a load more in wsx. Getting podiums over 13th in ama

More than it has previously obviously....I'm happy that riders like McElrath have an opportunity to make more money in the twilight of their careers...but lets not forget that the purse is paid to the team and not the riders, so we have no idea what the riders are actually making... How long is the WSX money going to be there? They are a shadow of what they said they were going to be...In spite of the money the teams are struggling to find riders to fill out their rosters for the upcoming season and have no star power to speak of....They would have been way more successful and supported by the manufacturers if they would have chosen to be an off season series instead of trying to compete with other series...

What we know is the combined purse of SX and MX before was 3.4 million. It is now 4.5 million. Was that extra 1.1 million split 50/50 between SX and MX or was it spread per SX and MX round?

If it's per round that's probably around an extra 40k in purse money per round. In reality I have no idea how that 1.1 million was spread out though evenly between SX and MX though.

Do you know?

EDIT

I did find this article stating the SX purse went up 900k this year.

2. The total purse payout, for the complete season, with classes combined, is now $3,060,000. Compared to $2,159,340. An increase of $900,680.

Does that mean the MX purse will only go up 200k? The initial press release stated only 1.1 million was added to the total SX and MX purse. 200k doesn't seem as drastic as you think

The big increase was the SMX 3 round which is a 5.5 million purse.

I don't know...just like we don't know what the WSX teams pay their riders from the purse money that is paid directly to the teams. I'm sure we will se the purse payout for MX soon.

I believe I edited my post right around when you replied. I'm hoping it's more but going off articles i've seen the MX purse might only get a 200k increase compared to SX which got a 900k increase according to this article. That's really not so drastic for MX. Only around 18k a round.

Yeah I'm not sure, but at the end of the day for those racers that do SX/MX/SMX will have a substantial increase in purse payout and for those that are 11th-20th in SX points at the end of the season are in danger of not qualifying for SMX if they don't race the outdoors and they will miss out on the major money that is available to them in SMX. That will open it up for those guys that are 20th and back to get in the top 20 and qualify for a much larger payday...Just my opinion but I think that guys like McElrath, Chiz, Noren, Starling, Moranz etc...will make more money annually racing SX/MX/SMX than they would racing just SX and WSX.

Michael or Lewis, are there any lists anywhere of who’s riding for each team/rumored?

I am 59, 70 lbs overweight, haven't raced since 2007, and never made it out of b class.

If wsx called and wanted to know if I was interested in coming over to race it would not be the most surprising thing that has happened so far in my life.00

How many riders in WSX have a WSX based contract that pays anywhere near as well as a US based SX/SMX/MX contract? (Or compared to even typical MXGP based contracts for that matter)

How many of those WSX riders have a Gear, Helmet, Boot, Goggle...etc. deal based just on WSX? How many riders get Win Bonuses from gear suppliers for WSX?

As for how much money WSX riders are actually getting to keep versus how much of that money goes to the team...well...anyone got an answer for that?

If I had to guess, Savatgy is the current WSX guy that has the best deal and it's based on racing WSX (his US-SX racing was in addition to/after the fact). Also, at this point, I think Joey will win the next WSX title.

First 13 Athletes Confirmed for the Global Series’ Six Events in 2023

2023 WSX Supercross Championship 1st Rider Announcement

The FIM World Supercross Championship (WSX) continues to build momentum as it heads into the 2023 season, with a roster of world-class riders already signed and focused on claiming the Championship Title.

Having experienced the incredible level of competition the new World Supercross Championship offers, 11 riders who competed in the 450cc (WSX) and 250cc (SX2) classes in 2022 have already confirmed their return, along with some new names.

SX Global CEO Adam Bailey said after the success of the 2022 season, the FIM World Supercross Championship is continuing to gain momentum and attract the fraternity’s elite athletes.

“This is just the beginning. There is a huge amount of work and negotiations that I’m aware of between teams, manufacturers, and championship contenders happening as we speak. It’s an incredibly exciting time.

“We will have many more exciting announcements about riders, the Championship and our expanded broadcast partnerships coming soon,” Bailey said.

American sensation Joey Savatgy (Rick Ware Racing) has unfinished business and is determined to claim the podium’s top step after finishing runner-up to Ken Roczen in the WSX class in 2022.

New to WSX in 2023 is former AMA 250cc Champion Justin Hill, competing for the BUD Racing Kawasaki team and in career-best form. Joining Hill at BUD Racing is the popular Frenchman Cédric Soubeyras.

Fellow French countrymen Thomas Ramette and Greg Aranda join Team GSM and between them, bring a multitude of European Motocross and Supercross Championship wins.

AMA Pro Motocross and Supercross Champion Dean Wilson (Firepower Honda), Former World Motocross Champion Jordi Tixier (Honda NILS) and longtime Supercross racer Kyle Chisholm (Pipes Motorsport) are also confirmed to compete in the premier class again.

Nine-time Australian Motocross and Supercross Champion Matt Moss will be looking to continue his return to peak form as he steps up to the WSX class in 2023 with MDK Motorsports.

2022 SX2 class World Supercross Champion Shane McElrath will be out to prove he is still a dominant force in his class, with his sights firmly set on going back-to-back and defending his World Title with Rick Ware Racing.

Hoping to put a stop to his Championship reign, however, will be the in-form 2022 runner-up Max Anstie (Firepower Honda), six-time French Champion Max Desprey (Team GSM) and upcoming talent Dilan Schwartz (Pipes Motorsport), who all return to the World Supercross fold in the SX2 class.
Tickets for the 2023 FIM World Supercross Championship season are on sale now. Visit the WSX Championship website to find out more.

I do not understand the reason for the team format they have set up.

It just limits the riders that can come in and run select rounds, and it doesn't make any sense to do that for a series that is not even established and is now obviously struggling.

What if somebody like tomac/herling/roczen got hurt and was out of another series, but healed up and wanted to go for wsx they would have to get another team to bump a rider.

They couldn't even form their own team because the number of teams is limited, or they would have to hire other riders to fill their roster.

It doesn't make any sense. What is the plus side, other than a weak attempt to guarantee enough riders the require qualifiers.

It seems like all it guarantees is a bunch of C group riders.

Who loses here?

More racing for us to consume and more paychecks for riders who really need them and yet there are so many people on here salivating at the prospect of this failing.

I don't get it.

They dont need the fastest riders in the world to put on a good show for the rest of the world outside of the USA / AND make feld pay their riders more.

Ummmm not really.....

I just think it's kinda laughable that they are playing this up like it's a "premier series" on the same level of US Supercross or MXGP when in reality it's closer to the competition level of a lot of Fair Races in the Summer.

The more dudes making money racing dirt bikes the better, but pump the brakes on the notion that this thing is the highest caliber of SX racing around.  It's just not.  Not even close.

It has to do with the payout structure they agreed on with the teams and having enough riders at each event. It's maybe the most interesting part of the series to see how it pans out for everyone.

I definitely think them going the team route was a mistake, there’s not a lot of incentive to pay big riders when the team are trying to make money in the middle

Naah just it's a show anyways. Anything that keeps money flowing into the pockets of the racers that have given their life to the sport is a good thing. They have to play it up, everyone knows the score. Hope that Savatgy cleans up, sharpens his skills and comes back to US SX stronger.

Can't win situation... even if they have Tomac like last year, some of you will say he was not really going 100% ...

Extra races and extra popcorn bags to enjoy. A bunch of "mini-Bercys" to entertain our mates down under, greens and trips for some riders... fine with me.

Bummer the champ is not defending his title.

I just hope they up the hype a bit, rename it  "World Super Uber Duper Mega Motorcross Universe Planetary Global Championship" or something to get back at Feld...  jab jab...

"Airtime" Guy Cooper should be interviewed as a former World SX champ. Just sayin'

Who loses here?

More racing for us to consume and more paychecks for riders who really need them and yet there are so many people on here salivating at the prospect of this failing.

I don't get it.

LungButter just hates world sx.

They dont need the fastest riders in the world to put on a good show for the rest of the world outside of the USA / AND make feld pay their riders more.

I wonder if they will  get some more riders in for the Aussie round ,  they have always had pretty big draw cards there ,

They've expanded the broadcast for this year.

AUSTRALIA – The FIM World Supercross Championship (WSX) has today announced the expansion of its global broadcast partnerships for the 2023 season, which will see supercross racing aired to more than 180 countries and 500 million households worldwide.

WSX Chief Commercial Officer Mick McKeown said the WSX live, as-live and replay schedule is significant across major partner networks.

“We’re proud to continue to deliver on our promise to grow the sport of supercross by offering one of the most comprehensive networks of broadcast partners supercross has ever seen.

“In addition to the exclusive U.S. rights agreement previously announced with FS1 and FS2, WSX has secured major partners in Eurosport and DAZN as well as key broadcast partners in its host regions.

“Television rights have also been finalised in other regions with extensive supercross viewer engagement and participation, including Japan, Brazil, sub-Sahara Africa, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

“From the Americas to Europe and Asia, World Supercross will be widely accessible to fans, which is not only great for the sport but will grow the profiles of the riders and see them become household names outside America,” said McKeown.

Warner Bros. Discovery will offer uninterrupted live and on-demand streaming coverage of every race from the WSX season across 50 markets in Europe* and in 20 languages via the Eurosport App and on discovery+ in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Ireland. (*Excludes Germany.)

Live television coverage of selected races will also be available on Eurosport 1 and Eurosport 2 in addition to the broadcast of a highlights programme following each round.

DAZN will offer exclusive broadcast of the FIM World Supercross Championship in Japan and non-exclusive broadcast on the platform globally until December 2023*. (*Excludes Brazil, USA, Caribbean, Australia, Republic of Ireland and France.)

DAZN EVP Global Head of Rights Tom Burrows said: “This announcement follows a number of exciting deals for DAZN, bringing even more exciting sports with passionate audiences to our platform.”

The first round of the 2023 FIM World Supercross Championship kicks off in Birmingham on Saturday 1 July 2023. Tickets are on sale now. Visit the WSX website to find out more.
