Possessing a firearm is an extremely large responsibility. I was introduced to them at age 7. I shot a .22 at the gun range with my father and a 4/10 shotgun on my uncle’s land out in the country. When I was 12-14ish, I shot a pistol for the first time. Not sure which type that was. I’m sure something mild and easy for a kid my age.

21 to purchase any firearm. This one is easy. Politicians can’t say with a straight face you have to be 21 to purchase alcohol or cigarettes but can purchase firearms at 18.

2 week wait period to purchase a firearm. My entire family owns firearms as they’re big hunters. I have friends who are too. Never once has any of them said yeah I’m going deer hunting on Saturday. Gonna stop by Cabella’s and buy guns and ammo on my way. Doesn’t happen. Wouldn’t affect them. I can nearly guarantee you that people do go out and buy a firearm and use it to harm people within a day or two of the purchase.

Optional gun buyback at your local sheriff’s office. They’ll pay you fair market value for your weapon. This prevents at least some sales from person to person and reduces the amount of firearms that end up in the hands of horrible people.

Obviously our background checks aren’t good enough. Just in this recent shooting, we know that mental illness is an extremely common trait in transgender people. I find it hard to believe that there wasn’t some sort of red flag in there that should have been caught, but as our background check system is now, it wasn’t.

Pass a test and renew your license every 5 years. Free of charge to you. Paid for by the state. To get your initial license after you turn 21, you go through firearms training and the instructor teaches you the many things that a lot of people might not have had the luxury of knowing like I did when I was a child.

Notice I never stated anything like a confiscation or a ban. That’s silly and would never work. We just can’t sit here and chalk up dead children and adults in mass shootings or regular homicides as the cost of freedom like some claim. It’s clearly an issue and it needs to be addressed. Many on the right dig their feet in because they see any measure at all, even the slightest thing, as an infringement on their rights. Speed limits are reduced on residential streets so people know there’s a consequence if you drive fast and it keeps the children there playing a lot safer than if there were no speed limit. There’s still going to be people who don’t follow that law and go 50, but that doesn’t mean there should be no speed limit on the residential streets just because some still won’t follow the law.
