Hip Replacement and Moto

I was curious if any of the members of VitalMX have had or know someone that has had a total hip replacement and continues to ride MX? I know Larry Roeseler has had one and I've talked to him years ago about it, but he does more desert type riding where as I strictly ride all the SoCal MX tracks. I've been wanting to talk to someone that has had a hip replacement and has been riding for years with it to get some advice or feed back as to how bad I may be screwing it up.
I had it done over 7 years ago and ride 2-3 times a week and I'm right at about the vet intermediate level so I know I'm probably doing some damage and wonder if I should hang it up before I really screw things up. Thanks for any feed back.

I was thinking I recently saw a mention of a racer with double hip replacements racing at REM. Maybe Rock, or the MXA crew can shed some light.

They have wanted me to have both hips replaced(total Hip) but I have been told it's time to stop riding if I have a total hip. I will try to link you to Dr. Mark Sanders, he's a riding Dr that does everthing he can to keep people riding,but he advised me to hang it up if I have the replacement.

Donn Bischellia (spelling)? had his done as well as the femur rod and rebroke everything and he is still at it and going pretty fast to boot. The guy is unreal. Walking on the other hand isn't one of his strong points these days. But he is living the dream.

Dennis Jonon got his hip replaced about a 1 1/2 years ago, I know he raced east coast lites supercross and outdoors this year in the 450 class...

I did talk to Dennis Jonon about a week after his hip replacement and he was actually inspired by what I had to say to him about the whole procedure. I can say that I have had absolutely no pain or problems with it at all since I've been riding with it. In fact, I've had a couple of pretty gnarly crashes with it and it came out untouched and un injured. Two years ago I was at Competition Park and went down so bad I had to be air lifted out with a broken back, internal bleeding, two collapsed lungs. broken shoulder, collar bone, ribs....etc and the funny thing is that my hip had absolutley no damage at all.
I'm just afraid I'm on borrowed time with it. I will say though that for anyone that needs one in the future, for me it has been well worth it.........so far.

I honestly dont think you would have to stop riding if you had them done, in fact I think you would enjoy it a lot more (there would be no more pain). The way they are designed now I think they can withstand a lot more that they could 20 years ago. I am a pretty aggressive rider and like I said it hasnt bothered me at all in the 7 plus years. I'm only 33 years old too and had them done 26.

I agree with you there, my back kills me from when I broke it, but I dont let it keep me from riding. I'll gladly take a few days of bad back pain for one day of good riding.

I've destroyed myself riding, but I just cant seem to stop. My doctors just laugh at me now every time I come in. I've been working in the industry for over 13 years so my justification is that I have to do it for work....haha.

I almost had to have mine replaced, I dislocated it really bad and its just not the same. Hips suck....lol

I honest to God didnt make any of them up, in fact I actually left some out. When I crashed and did all that crap to myself I was basically dead on the track they said for about 4 minutes. I had no pulse and wasnt breathing and they had to stick some giant needle into my lungs to let the air escape because the over expanded lungs were putting pressure on my heart cause it to not be able to beat. The in the helicopter they lost me again and by the time I got to the hospital I lost more than half my blood and had to have a few transfussions. It suck.

Your right, hips are never the same after you screw them up, and from what I've learned it cause a lot of stress on your back and other other joints when your hips start to go out because they start to over compensate for the damage of the hip.

I have a friend who has had both hips replaced. He is/was, Pro standard rider (he represented Oz at 92 Des Nations). I think it was about 6 months after he had them replaced that he went for his first ride, his bike coughed over a double, bailed out and broke both femurs. He has more metal than the 6 million dollar man.

I cant remember if that was last christmas or the christmas before, time is just flying by these days, but he walks like he has just got off a horse the first time in a week haha poor bastard.

He will never stop riding.

Yeah it sucks cause now my back and everything is weaker lol I threw my back out coming off a lip wrong 5 weeks ago... damn accelerator holes and square edges. My corner speed did improve for some reason though.

Thats my biggest fear, from my understanding if your to break a femur after having a hip replacement you can be pretty screwed for life.

Yea i dislocated my right hip at oakhill in 06 in the b class. Its never been the same after that, just always weak(even tho cycling atleast 150 miles /week). If i dab it in a corner hard it just hurts bad for the rest of the day, and have to go in every 6 months to make sure theres no necrosis which would lead to hip replacement.

I have been having more problems with my knee then my hip hurting if I catch it in a corner. I tore the PCL when I dislocated my hip and the weird thing is I didn't know anything was wrong with my knee cause of how bad my hip hurt. They say its comparable to breaking your Pelvis.

Thats pretty much what lead to me having to have a total hip replacement. The avascular necrosis started to set in and after a while there really wasnt much of a ball left on the top of the femur, it hurt so damn bad just to do anything.

Crap- I am getting ready to go get my hip checked out. Basically broke the ball off the end of my femur in 2003. It hurts all the freaking time. i have three screws going down into the femur.

I can't even lie on my left side at night, unless I want to wake up with a throbbing leg. It's crazy how sore this gets five years after the fact. I will have to check out this necrosis thing.

Thats how it all started for me, the ball of my femur broke off and they pinned it all back together and basically told me to let it last as long as it can. But like you said, it starting hurting just doing to simplest things in life, sleeping, walking, even when me and the "old lady" would be doing our thing that piece of crap would lock up on me and it would take a few minutes of excruciating pain ot try and get it back in place and it hurt like hell.

x2 If only I knew that racing mx would mean pain every day when I grew up, it wouldn't have changed a thing. I'm only twenty four. Been riding for (only) twenty years and I hurt like hell daily. Do us MX'ers know another way? Wink

Yeah, talk about a mood killer when your going at it hot an heavy and you have to say, "uh, can we wait a minute?, my hip just locked out of place and I cant move it" Or even worse when you find one of the left overs from the bar at the end of the night that seems to be a good hook up at the time, that is until you have a nice "plumper" riding you a little to rough and she pops your hip right out. I guess its a blessing though because that pain sobers you up enough to realize what it is you have in your bed with you and I cant think of a better way to get out of a bad "plumper" situation than using the old "my hip is locked in place and I need to go to urgent care.................dont worry, I'll drive myself"..........."here's some cab fare".
