Couple of items that need to be addressed in this thread…

1. Anyone who believes Malcom was in first gear out of the corner and through takeoff shouldn’t post in this thread.

2. Anyone who believes that you can somehow shift into true neutral from any gear shouldn’t post in this thread.

3. Anyone who doesn’t understand the correlation between engine rpm’s, engine load (force acting against the power the engine is producing) and its effects on transmission shift shouldn’t post in this thread.

4. Anyone stating opinion as fact shouldn’t post in this thread.

5. Finally, anyone who has not successfully executed an unsuccessful, partial, mis or half transmission shift should not post in this thread.

I got a quad (87 TRX 125) when I was in middle school. It didn't have a clutch, so I learned to do wheelies by purposely keeping my foot on the shift lever between 2nd and 3rd gear...essentially "false" neutral but on purpose, revving the quad, and then dropping into 2nd to pop up the front end. Lots of fun. Can't wheelie for shit these days, but I feel the story is relevant? lol

A bit different- the TRX is semi-auto. By holding the gear pedal up or down, you are disengaging the clutch. Not a false neutral at all.

fair enough. definitely not super knowledgeable on the ins and outs of a transmission. Shows my ignorance lol. Thanks for respectfully explaining it!

Someone really needs to read up on what factory teams do with gearboxes for supercross.

I have Penton 125 with a Sachs transmission, it has 72 Neutrals in it. Well, 72 I have found anyway!

I have some more on order to get it up to factory spec of 100. Supply issue is holding me up.

I'd love to see a good, detailed article on that!

Just got off the phone with Jeremy Albrecht. Was requesting some content on factory transmission per your request. Unfortunately, Jeremy didn’t have any written documents available. However, he did state that DirtWalker was one of the leading minds in factory transmission building and should have no issues educating me on the subject. So Mr. DirtWalker, I’m listening!

I'm pretty sure the teams cannot deviate away from what was Homogated (4 speed / 5 speed or whatever) unless of course the rules have changed.

Gears can be cut down and others beefed up whilst the shift drums can be tickled in order to select only the desired gears. I've yet to see a factory box and getting legit information on how it's done is not easy.

I thought AMA tech once specified that the gearboxes must be as per OEM.

for instance, if the OE is 5 speed, then all 5 gears must be present.
however, I had read somewhere that the material the gears were made of was not specified. So possible that 1st & 5th were made of nylon to save weight.
But the selector drums were welded so that it physically was not possible to select 1st & 5th.
This may have changed over the years though, I’m not sure.

what it does mean, is if a factory rider says he’s going down to 1st in a particular turn, this may not have any correlation to your 1st in your stock bike.
