The old KTMs are very sensitive to correct shock settings and setup, being PDS (no linkage).

My gf has a super clean '11 150 as a first bike, the thing is still super fun, but the modern ones are better built, have a linkage, usually less time under their belts, etc.

Not trying to get up in your business dude, but if you can afford an '18 350, but decide you'd like the prefer a two stroke, you'd probably be better off getting a more modern 150 or 250.

Thanks.. the 2010 was really clean and I was feeling old two stroke nostalgic. I'll most likely get something newer, and if I feel like an old bike, ride the 02 CR250.

Ah fair play man, if you like it then don't let me or anyone else put you off 👍 Sounds like a similar deal to hers, stupidly tidy for the age and a good price, so figured why not.

The right spring and valving to suit you is more critical on the PDS bikes than the later linkage models, but it can still work well and the engines are sweet and really good fun imo.

Before long it'll probably even be allowed in some vintage races so that's a pretty cool angle as well, although it sounds like the CR ticks that box.

currently 230 nekkid…. my 21 350 pulls the front end up out of a corner with my big head over the triple clamps. I was nervous buying mine, I didn’t sell my 20 FE 450 because I was “450 guy” and just wanted to try it. I didn’t like the 350 as much but my friend that i bought it from said just commit to it and don’t ride your 450, after 10 hours on the bike ride your 450 and tell me what you think. I listened to him and when i rode my 450 I was shocked after 1 lap how lethargic and slow the 450 felt under acceleration and especially at turn in while cornering. Accelerating out of corners I initiate my throttle earlier and at a more extreme lean angle. I don’t have a lit pro but I do wear a polar vantage while I ride and it’s does have a gps feature that gives MPH and comparing the speed at certain parts of the track I ride I was always 1-3mph faster. there are so many threads on here if you search, also many videos on you tube comparing lap times and ride comparisons between the 250/350/450… not one will ever say that the 350 isn’t the better bike. Also the Vortex from XPR or Twisted is a game changer …. just get it!

Buy the 350 you will not be disappointed but you have to commit to it!
Hi, interesting reading this thread, I’m a 210lb vet expert with the opportunity to own a 350 next year, but feel a bit unsure about it.

I’ve ridden 450 well in the past, but had 8 years away from
The sport, come back ridden 2 years on a 250 sx, went pretty well but do miss the 4 stroke smooth power at some tracks. I managed to blag a go on a 350 at 2 occasions this year, both times bike felt surprisingly sluggish & gears very long. Seemed to have little urgency to get to the strong power. Think gearing was 14:50 on one of the bikes.

I appreciate up 2 teeth on rear would help, guessing the art to these bikes is not allowing rpm to go below a certain point through the corner to ensure it pulls well on exit, is that the thing to learn ? 450 pull from prettt much any rpm so we get used to that.

Thanks

The older ones I had felt the same way to me stock. The bike was fast on top, just had to let it rev.

My mods were a pipe, wild map switch, G2 quick turn throttle and I think a 13/52 or 13/53 gearing. Definitely helped get it to the upper rpm range quicker I thought but still was lacking bottom end/torque at my weight I thought. Especially for hitting jumps right out of corners. I’m really hoping the 23 fills that void for me especially since if probably 15 lbs lighter now than I was then.

I always remember hearing 7 lbs takes away 1 hp in my early two stroke days. Anyone know how that relates with a four stroke?

While I'm only a 150 Lbs A rider, I just picked up a 23 350 and absolutely love it! I had 2020 350 which felt like a built 250. I also had a 21 factory edition 450 that I went to Loretta's on and the 23 350 combines the best of both worlds. I am able to ring on the gears on the 23 350 like my 250 sxf but I can keep it a gear higher if I need to and it still manages to pull its way out.

i’m running the stock for 2021 14/51 gearing and I can roll third gear (keeping momentum up) through most corners except tight inside lines i’ll drop to second. I find second to be fairly short and I shift up as soon as I exit the corner. When I keep it in third I can be pretty ham fisted with the throttle from center out, maybe a slight dab of the clutch (yes I am
on old 2 stroke guy) and it barks to life and I can clear any jump on the tracks I ride at with out any issue. I am thinking about trying 14/50 and using 2nd gear through the corners allowing it to pull longer … or I might just leave it alone since i’m used to it. I will admit my first couple rides I thought I had made a mistake but I stuck with it and will never go back to a 450!

Ah sounds like it may take a bit of getting used to, as to be expected I suppose. Trouble when we jump on friends bikes that are totally different to what we ride, doesn’t really help much lol.

Do you run the black (short) throttle cam ?

Other issue we have in uk, lots of good deals on 450’s, but 350’s seem to be the one everyone wants so that can be a factor. Can get some lovely facory edition 450’s for less then a ragged 350.

I rode a 23 husky 350 this weekend and liked it. My bike is a 2019 husky 450 and felt right at home. Not fan of the air fork for the 450 (have the spring conversion) but when I ride the 250 or 350 the air fork seems fine. This must have something to do with the chassis.? Anyways power was good, ran the same gears on the track as I did with the 450, small track 2nd and 3rd gear and the thing barks. Not sure on how it would do on a bigger track, but it was fun. I ride the +45 A/B class and weigh 165 pounds. There is a power difference so +200 you would be giving up some power. BUT the 350 does allow you to push into sections harder than you can on the 450 and really feel like a hero in the corners.

You're not wrong, when I sold my mint 35hr tc250 I had to go back two years (and a model generation) backwards to get a passable 55hr 350 for marginally less haha, and luckily that's because a mate was moving on to a fresh one.

In my almost worthless opinion, 350's are the way to go in the UK unless you're highly skilled or just a monster, the average track seems a lot more compact than in the US, which does stand to reason.

I’ve always heard 7lbs of body weight will robe 1 hp for two strokes. Anyone know if the same applies with four strokes? Our difference in weight is 50 lbs so in theory I’d be losing 7hp? I’m hoping to spin some laps on my buddies this weekend before I pull the trigger. Appreciate the ride report.

Yes, it did for me, and I am happy I spent the 10ish hours to really get used to it and then compared to my 450, it also helped that I was able to swap my suspension from the 450 to 350 so it was an even comparison on the motor and not weird handling/ suspension issues to throw me off..

I think most that claim they don't like a 350 or need a 450 just jump on a friends 350 or remember trying an earlier model and spin a lap and its a totally different motorcycle now. They are probably the type to brake early, coast into a corner using the 450-engine braking (creating all the unnecessary braking bumps to the apex) come to an almost complete stop and then lazily torque out of the corner. Well yeah it's not going to work like that, with the 350 you can accelerate further to the corner, brake later, and accelerate harder exiting the corner without wasting energy. I regularly have other riders come up to me at the track and ask if my bike is a 350 or 450 or compliment me on the exhaust note,

My current set up is Vortex mapped by XPR, 14/51 gearing, black cam, two stroke air cage, vented airbox cover, and OEM exhaust. I have thought about getting an exhaust (Akro or PC) but thankfully the availability has been so bad it has kept me from dropping the 1000-1200 dollars on something that probably won't help the power in the long run. I have also thought about trying the air boot from the earlier model as it has an extended intake that is supposed to help low end a little... it's like 60-70 dollars so i might still try it but I don't think it is necessary.

I think it is funny because I always hear from dealers and other riders that the 350 is a niche bike and not popular but good luck finding one new at the dealer or clean used! I will probably be somewhere between 50-60 hours when I sell mine next year when I take the plunge on a 24 for my 50th B-day!

I didn't really notice anything with the air box mod. The only time I told myself I noticed a gain in low end, was when I wanted to justify the purchase and the hassle of putting it on.

If your selling it this next year, I personally wouldn't bother, but of course your like the rest of us, we like trying stuff out.

If you install one, let us know what you think.

I did the air boot on my 2019. I don’t think that one part will dramatically change the bike. But when you add in all the other little changes like 2 stroke filter cage, exhaust, ECU, vented side plate, yes there is a size-able difference in throttle feel and power

Yup, just like these guys have said - if you have decent corner flow/momentum and are not heavily relying on the grunt of the 450.. you will love the 350. I run 3rd on mine in many corners, even tight inside ruts if the track is hard and I don't have someone right on my ass requiring the bike to jump immediately (Vet-A rider here, so it aint that serious anyway!)

Stock gearing was 14/50 up until 2019. 2020 on is 14/51. I stick with 14/51. Guys that want more immediate response or ability to carry 3rd like 14/52. Starting in 2023 they went to 14/52 stock which likely adds to the bottom response of the new bike.

I also run the G2 quick turn tube and cam. The optional stock black one is only marginally quicker than the stock grey one.. but by no means is it "quick". It still is quite a long throw.

In addition to the other mods everyone has mentioned for bottom bark, there are also a few companies making the alternate shaped exhaust manifolds which are reported to be pretty effective. Never tried them myself.

FWIW

I've ridden 450s and CR500s most of my life. I'm 6' 240 ish. I picked up an 18 YZ250F with 3 hours on it just out of curiosity. I took it out to Perris without touching anything, clickers, sag, nothing and I had so much fun on it. I was shocked at light it felt, how well it turned in without touching a thing. When I checked the sag it was 138 lol.
I set the clickers to what MXA had, got the sag down and had an epic time throwing it around. I'm still surprised at how much fun that bike is.

Rode a 23 FC350 today and I will say I’m impressed. Don @ SML said if perfectly IMO, Gives a feeling of what 450 power was like 10-12 years ago. I could definitely ride it harder and longer than a current day 450. Goldie locks and the three bears come to mind, it’s just right!

The ‘19 was more like a really fast 250f, than it was a 450. The ‘23 is much more like a 450 in comparison, but with a lighter feel. Two of my friends have upgraded to the ‘23, coming off of a ‘19-‘22 model bike. One of them is selling it, because of the new power it has, it’s too much for him. The other one loves it, but he’s younger and faster.
That being said, you won’t be missing anything that a 450 has, buying a 350. I had a ‘18 SX150 a few years ago and I was a solid 205-210 and I could do every jump at the track and the bike had more than enough power, as long as you kept it singing. Sold it to Bruce372, he is not a small guy either.
Guess it just depends how much effort you want to put into it.
You know what's funny, that 150 is so fast, it's crazy. Every lap has a come to Jesus moment, and even trail riding, it's a handful, spinning up the back wheel when it hits so hard. I did swap the carb.

I don't get the fuss about 450s being too much, I took my fc450 trail riding it's nimble enough and the engine has finesse. The track, the 450 runs like a dream machine, just leave a 450 stock and, at least the husky, aren't a bear to ride.
