Hey guys,

It’s almost new bike time for me and i’m having trouble choosing… I currently have a matching pair of 2019 YZF’s (250 and 450) and trying to decide whether to go 2022 YZ’s or 2022 CRF’s, im used to the YZ but i’ve heard a lot of good about the CRF

As a big rider (6’5) a bike that can accommodate my size well and be comfortable is my main thought when moving to another brand.

Has anyone made the Yamaha to Honda switch and what are the pros and cons?

Cheers 🥂

At your height, you ought to swing a leg over a Kawasaki. I’ve owned both of the brands you have mentioned, and at 6’3”, I feel far more comfortable on the Kaws than anything else I’ve tried.

I went from my 19 yz250f to my now 22 crf250r. Yz250f has more hit off bottom, which I don’t like as much, I like Honda’s smooth power. I can’t comment on suspension cause I run KYB A-Kit on both bikes. The Honda corners better.

I like the ergo’s on the Honda much better, although, at your size I’m going to suggest staying Yamaha, the Honda does feel smaller to me.

Quality of design and components are much nicer on the Honda than my Yamaha.

Hope this helps you out, I really doubt you could go wrong regardless.

Agreed. I’m 6’2 and have ridden new Yamahas and Honda’s but to me the KX had the most comfy feeling out of the 3.

What do you really means about "bottom hit" ? I rode an 250sxf 2020 last week and all reviews say it is a "screamer" with poor low end....For me back to riding after 20 years (on 125 smoker), this KTM was a torque monster ! did not even went to top RPM range.
And i feel the huge torque was here from IDLE to the maximum i could reach on this circuit. But it was nothing smooth at very low RPM and not so fun on very sharp corner (most of the track)....in fact i was using the clutch for taming the beast....

So the YAMAHA is "worst" than that on bottom end ??

I want if possible a lighter and freer fealing that this KTM.....so i am hesitating between yami, honda, and kawi

I am just a local 30A guy so I get tired, the Yamaha has so much hit on the bottom that when I get tired, especially when riding hare scrambles it has a very on/off throttle feel because of the off idle torque it has.

You won’t find any 250f’s with less low end hit than the ktm 250sxf. I’ve rode them all but that is JMO so take that with a grain of salt lol.

Any modern 250f is going to feel like a torque monster compared to a 125.

You shouldn't be using the clutch to "tame " the motor. Ride the bike a gear higher and use the clutch to modulate the power.

Having low end power on a 250 is nice because you can ride a gear higher and shift less(similar to how a 450 is ridden)

As you progress and get better you will want more and more low end power.

Keep in mind the mid-gen update to both Yamahas (20- 450 and 21-250f) is a nice refinement from your 19s too.

In Australia (im not from the states) im hearing alot of whispers the new CRF250’s are blowing up and needing whole engine rebuilds with less than 10 hours… is there any truth to this or just poor maintenance?

I’ve thought about it, however most of my buddies that have said mid gen update have had a lot of motor issues, cam chains bottom ends the lot, my 250 has just hit 107 hours (450 has 67) and has just had a full rebuild, keep in mind it’s only had 2 top ends before hand. I’m not kind to it either and tend to ride like i think i’m a Star Rider because it sounds cool 🤷🏼‍♂️, Which has put me off upgrading

My 21 has been nothing but reliable, 73 hours. I rev the piss out of it. Ive only seen cam chain issues on 19-20 250Fs.
