Love that response.

No worries. You seem happy enough to pay for it.

Good luck with that, Princess Pronoun.

Hi Vital,
I did my best to pay my way through school while pursing a lucrative degree (Construction Management).
I went to the cheapest college I could, worked part time while doing full time time school, lived in the cheapest place I could, picked up side jobs, donated plasma, sold some of my things, drove a POS car, no vacations, etc
However, I did have to end up taking out $7,000 worth of student loans (not that much) my last 2 semesters to cover living costs because I ran out of cash.

I'm now $7,000 dollars richer. Should I buy a KTM 300SX or stand up jetski?

Take out a loan and buy both.

But they voluntarily make min payments and took the loan knowing exactly what the terms were beforehand. And no government loans were predatory. They were already subsidized and The interest rates have been low as well.

Also, Why did they need loans in the first place? So they didn't have to work and could just kick back and relax through college? A person working 30+ hours a week while in college wouldn't have that much to pay back when done if they were frugal.

If they want to help, rework the loans to zero interest or whatever if payments are made on time every month in full. But people should have to pay back what they borrowed for a degree they are benefiting from.

Being a full time student is a full time job. Do you want a surgeon who had to take 30 hours out of their week that they would have been studying just to make ends meet?

It's completely arbitrary that public education is only funded from K-12. I'm arguing that public education should be fully funded pre-K - College.

For example to your first point. A lawyer who graduates law school could easily have 200k in loans by the time they graduate. This person now is constrained by the type of legal work that they can pursue because they are a slave to the debt. There's no money in being a public defender or an environmental lawyer so this person is forced to become a corporate lawyer which they never wanted to do and has no value to society.

"Why did they need the loans" Tuition needs to be paid in full by the time the semester starts. Where is an 18 y/o going to get a 5 figure check from?

Also more broadly I fundamentally disagree to the individualistic perspective when considering systemic problems. Systemic outcomes have systemic causes. 1.7 trillion dollars in student debt isn't from a lack personal responsibility, it's exists from faulty government policy.

Undergrad is not a full time job, and that is the majority of the loans. My wife and I had $140,000k of debt when done. I'm a teacher and she is a pt. We managed to pay it off in 7 years. If we could do it, any lawyer or Dr could as well making way more. Just took sacrifices, that we choose to make. She also choose to get a PhD from a private school.

Free college for future students is a whole different thing and argument IMO. That I also don't agree with. But I'm all for assistance to low income people to go to college. Undergrad is already almost completely free for truly poor people.

One of the primary reasons college cost has gone up so much is because of the money the govt dumped into loans. It's economics 101. Pretty simple stuff.

I’m loving the cheerleading for “the rest of us” paying for the “poor college kids”…that couldn’t find a way to pay their own debts…

As too many of us know all too well, they can see fit to buy all the other comforts in life whilst bitching about their self-inflicted 4 year experiment.

Excuse me? $125,000 individual income limits…? Anyhow care to look at that, again? WTF?

Oh, and the Pell crowd gets a bonus…AGAIN.

This is nothing more than a bribe-system for a certain kind of mindset.

How’s
That
For
“Systemic”

I have 48 employees, pretty much all are 17-25 years old.

Today at one of my stores, one of the college graduates (May of 2022) who works for me looked at her phone during her shift and literally started jumping up and down with joy when she read old uncle Joe just bailed her out of $10k in worthless college education.

I was not there, but my wife was, and questioned her on her reaction to everyone else being on the hook to bail her out of her decision to take on that debt. Her response, "So what".

You are not concerned that people who worked their way through college (did not take loans), or worked to pay off their loans, are getting screwed? Her response, "So what".

Joe just bought another vote. It is all about me and my freebies, screw the future and our economy. Socialism is great! (sarcasm...).

And the sad part is she is a great employee, just with her government funded education she should not be working for me with that education and background. But she cannot find a job in the career path she has chosen that pays shit, sadly working at the same place that is the "first job" for most high school kids is the best she can do with her shit college education.

I am truly frightened for the path we are taking as a country, so many people are being tricked into thinking the government can solve all of their problems and take care of them forever. No one wants to be responsible for their own actions, or their own destiny, just let good ole Joe be my savior and I can sit on my ass forever.

Yeah…good idea….publicly fund through a bachelors degree, and then a bachelors degree will be as meaningless as a high school diploma, because everyone will have one, and if everyone has one it’s as if nobody has one because there is no competitive advantage to them.

But should we just publicly fund the tuition? Or would we have to publicly fund living expenses, and vacations and drugs, and all the other crap people used their student loans for BESIDES the tuition for their education? Or would people still have to get “predatory” student loans to pay for all of that while they are “full time students” on the tax payer dollar?

Further…everyone hates our public education in America, complains about it, not enough money, not enough teachers, low scores, systemic this systemic that…blah blah blah….is that really what you want college to turn into? The government sucks at pretty much everything but war…let’s keep them out of college educations….

And…there it is!

Anyone care to speculate on how many more of these college kids will be UNMOTIVATED now that they have even LESS PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY? (As demonstrated by AZ’s example!…”So, what?”)

No worries. I can always buy more automation and use a maquiladora…if I have to.

All the while…let’s give people more reasons NOT to work.

Hey, I know! UNIVERSAL INCOME! Grinning

That is how credit cards work. Responsible people work off credit card debt by making more than the minimum payment. The key word here is “work”. If these students choose to take out loans then they need to be responsible adults and pay for what they borrowed. You can say all you want about interest rates but that is not anyones problem except the person who signed up for it. Oh wait, thanks to Biden I guess it is all on everyone else except the ones who benefit from the education.

This is why you need to pay attention on what box you check when it’s time to vote

Lots of European countries have free college and are among the most well educated in the world. They also enjoy a higher standard of living, work/life balance, and overall well-being with family life, mental health etc. than America does. We are dropping down the charts every year, comparatively. The U.S. corporate/money over humanity lie that has brainwashed us all, demands that everyone pay out their ass in order to attend college, receive decent healthcare and on and on and on.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, for the 1970-71 academic year, the average in-state tuition and fees for one year at a public non-profit university was $394. By the 2020-21 academic year, that amount jumped to $10,560, an increase of 2,580%.

We have greedy overlords who want us all to become dumber. They're winning.

Why do people without wealthy parents want to go to college? Lol. You do understand when the semester starts your full tuition payment must be paid in full. Student's either need parents to front them the money or a loan to go to college, that's the only way in the current system. How else are they going to come up with a 5 figure check? You're shaming people for become a more educated person. The more educated people are the better.

No, the government will print the money to pay the lenders and the money that was printed will be added onto the national debt. There's no tax increase.

With your logic, why wouldn’t the government just print a million dollars for every American…then we’d all be millionaires…problem solved, right? Why do you think they don’t just do that?

Obviously there's a limit to how much currency can be printed. Over printing will lead to inflation eventually. I'm arguing that canceling student debt is worth the cost. It's only 2 years of military budget after all.

Everyone has short memories but President Trump printed 500 billion dollars to try to stop the stock market from crashing when COVID first hit. The money was literally evaporated in one hour. The stock market chart of it is insane. To act like what I'm proposing is too out of reach is your lack of understanding. Here's a video explaining.

The economy is a scam and people go broke for all sorts of reasons. Cost of living is fucked. People go bankrupt from medical bills. ect. ect. I'm glad you made it out from the slave of debt but to act like everyone else is a weakling is a projection of your own insecurity of how hard it was to make it out alive and that's the entire point. It doesn't have to be this way we could have a better world.

I read the term predatory loans. Wasn't the income from student loans part of the calculation to help pay the ACA?
So if you are complaining about paying your loan back with interest, you obviously are against affordable health care.
Because if you're not going to do your part in funding affordable health care, you must be against it.
It's kind of funny when the kids with a worthless education realize they have to help fund government programs figure it out. That the government funds their programs by taking money from the people. Poor little college kids. Probably turns them into conservatives when they see their bill.
