Vital MX Forum QNAs are back! This week's guest is privateer racer, Kevin Moranz.

Kevin Moranz is one of the most creative privateers out there with his program. From his own YouTube content, weekly giveaways, Patreon subscribers with chatrooms and exclusive content, week-to-week new sponsors on his helmet and bike, plus more. Kevin really works all the angles to make the racing dream work and his passion for it is obvious.

Bring your best questions, and we'll have Kevin around up until the weekend to answer them. As always, keep it respectful, and ask questions that you would like in a face-to-face meeting.

I'll ask the first one. Kevin, what is "Moranz Mafia" and how'd you come up with it / your Patreon stuff?

Thanks for doing this Kevin. As a privateer, how difficult is it getting from race-to-race? Do you drive to all of them? Fly to some? How do you get your bike around?

Also, how difficult is travel when comparing Supercross to the Nationals?

“Moranz Mafia” was a spin off of what I started last year which is a creative way to get fans involved in my program to obviously help me get to the races using patreon. If you’d like to join the MORANZ MAFIA you can click the link in my bio on social media @moranz.57 or head over to moranzmafia.com . If you join today at the intermediate tier and above, you will get entered in our weekly giveaways:
- signed pair of Oakley Airbrake goggles
- signed Acerbis front number plate
- AND a YCF 125s pitbike we will be giving away after the SX Season.

ADDITIONALLY- great companies like Koi CBD have partnered up with the Moranz Mafia to send every single one of our patrons a pain relief roll on gel shipped straight to their door ($40 value), so join in now while that offer is still available!

Joining any tier gets you accepted to our behind the scenes social media account on Instagram (@moranzmafia) where we dive deeper into our weekly racing and talk about the drama / crazy stuff that happens within my racing that we can NOT talk about to the “public”.

Our top tiers even get your first and last name on my race bike!! The higher tier you join, the more entires you get for our giveaways. I’ll look forward to chatting with you guys inside of the MORANZ MAFIASmile

Kevin, you often transfer to the main event via the LCQ. It seems like an accepted part of the racing that there is often a last-lap, last-ditch effort for the final transfer spot, often resulting in a takeout. What's your opinion on the "last turn pickup pass" and related LCQ shenanigans? Are you OK with it? Have you ever been pissed that someone took you out? Have you ever done it to someone who took exception to the move?

You lapped me at a Springfield AX in the B class...and I thought I was quick 🤦...You have raced all forms (AX, SX, Outdoors). Do you think Hoosier and Kicker can prepare kids for supercross? Always wondered if a kid did AX from 50s to pro if he would be better off vs someone who did the whole outdoor loretta lynn chasing?

Yo Kev- From your view point, is the next level more about confidence or training? - And what’s it like having Fagala in your corner? Please give him a weekend off soon so he can come ride with us 🤙✊🏻✊🏻

Hey Kevin,

Fellow Kansan and Decker Performance customer here. Are you racing outdoors? If so, does it take more money and work to keep the bike in tip top condition compared to a supercross series?

You've ripped some MONSTER starts over the years against a gate full of Factory & Factory-support bikes.

Tell us a little more about your engine & tuning package!

As a privateer it is pretty tough. Thankfully I have a transportation team this year called Next Level Racing supported by Panic Rev, Fitz Roofing, and Risk Racing. It’s the best privateer transportation team I’ve been a part of. Everyone is there to help you, and everyone is happy. This allows me to choose if I fly to a round or drive depending on distance. Unfortunately, the team is not doing outdoors, so I’m am currently trying to find a similar situation from a team to race at the middle 9 rounds of outdoors.

It is an unfortunate part of our racing but completely warranted. This is what most of us do for a living and if there’s an opportunity in the last corner that’s going to make you enough money to allow you to get to the next round, its part of racing. Hard take outs aren’t ideal, but a little rubbing is racing in that situation. I’ve done it to people and people have done it to me. Not fun being on the receiving side of it😂

At this point I really think it’s more about training / bike set up. My confidence in my ability is there, I just haven’t been able to perform at my potential. Doing most everything within my program by myself, marketing, travel agent, website editing, driver, mechanic, sponsorship relations, everything with the Moranz Mafia, keeping up on my social media, then I still have to find time for riding, training, gym, meal prep and more … it leaves minimal time for focusing on what matters which is riding / training. Tack on not having a training facility to live at, makes the riding / bike tuning tough. I’ve struggled which bike set up all year but that’s what happened when you don’t have a suspension tuner at ever race. We just went fully stiffer front a rear before Denver and it helped a lot. My plan is to fully flatten my current home track which is a dinky AX / jumpy MX track right after Supercross to truly build a real SX track. So right now I’m working to find anyone with equipment in the Midwest who wants to come join the dirt moving party in Topeka, KS May 11th -19th😂 Hoping the pulp mx LCQ race goes well so I can pay for everyone’s fuel that comes out to help💪

Funny you ask… fully stock motor. Hasn’t been touched. I have a twisted ECU pre programmed, not tuned. That’s it. I do run the Rekluse torque drive clutch pack, FMF pipe, and Pirelli tires that always seem to hook up greatSmile

If you get a good gate pick Friday for the PulpMX race, are you going to take your typical 450 main gate and just pull the holeshot from the far outside like you've been doing on Saturday nights? good luck this weekend Kevin, bring Topeka five minutes of fame Friday night lol.

You’ve done some ADAC supercrosses in Germany a few years ago and i’ve been lowkey following you since then. Any nice stories from those races?

How have you found the step up to 450 class in relation to your over all budget? I guess cheaper to run a 450 and better purse?? Tougher to make the main though?

Hi Kevin, love the vlogs, they’ve turned me into a moranz fan and now you’re my privateer guy. My question is, in your opinion whats making the difference between yourself who gets into the main via lcq mostly and someone who gets in to the main via heat and a few Lcq. Speed wise it must only be a second a lap on average difference, do you know where that comes from? Is it just a privateer vs being on a satellite team thing?

Kev, are you the "left sock first" or "right sock first" kind of guy? Any pre-race rituals? Sideways

I have some cool stories but definitely something I’d have to talk about in a video not type out😂 was super blessed for the opportunity and looking forward to going overseas again soon if offered any kind of opportunity.

You hit it on the head! I never doubted my ability, it just started rough with my massive crash at A1. It is cheaper to be competitive and better pay. I’m sure you’ll see a fair amount of guys go full 450 next year.

Yes, outdoors is much more expensive and harder on the body / equipment. That’s why you see some of the top guys doing Supercross only programs.

Always do the same handshake every time before gate drop no matter who I’m with at the gate. My dad and I always did it growing up so I keep it going.

that #1 gate pick seems like it was well worth the money lol. awesome job that friday night, and as much crap as you got for the red flag jump, there were no rules so I dont see the problem lol.

Could you, or someone like you, make a season of doing all off-schedule races and come out nearly the same monetarily as you would doing a full supercross/motocross season?
For instance, Bercy/Germany/Euro supercrosses, a few arenacrosses, and the random big pro purse races?
