Danny LaPorte was a part of the build team as well.

Nuetech also helped in the weight saving question with the TUbliss

Looks fun.

I wonder what RC's bike weighed in at last weekend?

Sweet.

Could be pricey to do though.

Did they mention how much the bike started out weighing? I'm curious how much they spent on it to. That rear hub looked pretty cool at :22 from the end.

Cool project, putting a bike on a strict diet like that would make me feel guilty about what I had for breakfast.

It would be interesting to also do a complete weight analysis of your typical riding gear (head to toe) for both MX and trail. I've seen some guys going on a 50 mile loop that look like they are going backpacking for a week!

I must admit I am intrigued.

So I guess they start with a 300 XC? And then drop over 22 pounds.

Workhorse and torque wonder.

Engine: Single cylinder, 2-stroke
Displacement: 293 cc
Weight: ~ 100.4 kg (221.34 lbs)

I sure would like to spin some laps on that. At 199 lbs it must feel light and be really responsive.

What's the motor like on those 300s? In stock form is it a slow-revving chugger with a heavy flywheel or would it be good for moto? How would it stack up against ... say a stock YZ250 motor?

Any handling issues for moto?

why is a two stroke better for the trails?

a four stroke should get more traction on the rough terrain?

more torque to.

On the vid, he tells you.

They appreciate LIGHTWEIGHT bikes because they sometimes ride in tight trail conditions where they sometimes have to turn around, etc. Been a loooong time since I had to do the wheelie 180 turnaround bit because a trail dead-ended or something.

Plus I would imagine fewer overheat issues.

The smokers can be tuned / setup to be torquers as well.

lighter, sound doesn't travel as far, and way more HP and torque than a comparable displacement four stroke.

The torque and HP differences are why the four stroke folks are concerned having 250cc two strokes in with the 250Fs.

What is funny is no one had a problem letting four strokes with twice the displacement of two strokes racing against each other but now some have a cow thinking about equal displacements compete against each other.

So it looks like you could put a shorty silencer on it, lose the hand guards, etc and still drop a little more weight.

Has anyone here raced a KTM 300 seriously in moto?

What did you have to do to the bike as far as changes? ( Yeah, you can race anything but I mean setting it up properly just for mx. )

Or does KTM have a full mx version somewhere?

300 is much better suited for off road-trails. If you want it to rev quick you can put a SX fly wheel on it or buy an aftermarket one. TrailTech makes one.IMHO it is the best 2 stroke off road bike ever built, but if I was going to ride MX I would buy something else.

Especially like the part about the titanium expansion chamber and silencer. Betting the silencer is more than just the Ti canister . Warms the heart to know someone out there at the top of the moto world still cares about real U.S. motocross!Smile

There is a guy on here that took the 250 sx and somehow got a 300 top end and pipe to fit on it.

Having owned a 300 MXC and spent many hours riding an 05 300 EXC I can tell you that the engine is whatever you want it to be. They come with three different power valve springs. Red is for high revving rocket ship power Yellow is somwhere in the middle and green is for lots of low end stump pulling power. I have experimented with the EXC and it is amazing the difference that little spring makes. With the Red spring in it it will rip the yellow off my RM as it goes by but with the green spring the throttle is like a rheostat. That is the single best engine I have ever ridden. I would not hesitate to mod the suspension take some weight out of it and race it any day. MXA built a moto version of it a few months back and loved it also. 1 caveat, you must change the rear wheel to a 19 incher.

There's a guy on KTM talk that managed to put a KTM 380 crank and cylinder on the 250/300 cases. Mmmmm.

It'd be interesting to see just how light they could make a KTM144. CF subframe, etc.
Here's a CF Ducati- Drops nearly 100 lbs off stock

I think MXA took a KTM 250SX and put a 300 top end on it to get a 218 lb (wet) KTM 300SX.

Would probably be a better place to start if you want a strictly MX bike.

I have a 250SX w/ a 300cc top end on it. (the parts just bolt right on) It absolutely rips. I'm considerably faster on it than I was on my CRF450R but I ride better now as well.

I run a mid to front pack Intermediate pace on a good day.

I weighed it once and it actually weighed to the # what the book said it weighs, 208# ready to ride minus fuel.

For moto, it is cheaper and better to start w/ a 250SX to build your 300SX. Add in a ported cylinder, a Dick's racing carb mod, and an FMF SST system and the bike is just kills. Smooth strong power from idle till it hits the rev limiter.

MX-Tech suspension is the last ingredient for the perfect moto bike.

I crash a lot less on this bike than I did my previous 450. I'm not sure if it is the lack of 2 stroke momentum or the steel frame or a combo but the bike just doesn't 'flick' me like the 450s did. I use to have big narly crashes on a regular basis on my 450 but I hardly ever crash anymore and never hard.

This was taken very near the end of the build.

Id buy one if it was a different color. Orange doesnt go with my riding gear. My stylist also says it makes my skin look blotchy

From my trail riding days the lightweight and quick response of the 2 stroke engine is ideal for dodging trees, holes, logs, big rocks , animals. If you watch the GNCC races alot of the riders are on 2 stokes and doing well.
