So now that I can finally talk about it, my brand new 21 had a rod failure. Exact hours was 23.9. Serviced constantly.Nobody buy the Aegis insurance. It’s a scam. These bikes are sold for “competition use” and the dealer will try and sell you out on their insurance. Once you get it and if anything goes wrong, their response is that do not cover any competition use vehicles. The shop & adjuster even knew it was a rod failure, but the actual company’s reason was “due to pro level completion use, this is too far out of warranty”. They found every reason not to help. They pulled my results, my YouTube, and my Instagram. Here’s some pics of the motor. And Yamaha didn’t want to do anything since it was past the 60 day warranty. No 450 should have a rod failure at 23.9 hours. The 22s have a new rod part number but I believe it is the same, the cases have a new part number aswell but they’re the same. If you have a 21/22 YZ450F I highly recommend getting a carillo rod ASAP. If you can’t find one, the Moose Carillo is the same exact rod.

You should be good, the 250s dont have this problem. Highly recommend doing the timing chain every 15-20 hours though on those depending on how hard you ride. And eventually getting a JE piston by pro circuit

I believe they did the same thing on the 14? Had a rod problem and the 15 had a new part number. If I remember correctly, it was the 250 and 450

According to Kris Keefer who just had this happen as well it’s a Heat treatment issue and in his words the “22 YZ450F crank as those rods have been treated better (per Yamaha)” I spent time on the phone with crankworks and they confirmed that the 22 rod is improved however aren’t sure whether the 21 is breaking due to a forging issue or heat treatment issue

Know of someone who blew a rod on a 22 YZ 450 with 10 hrs on it. Yamaha 450 rod only cost Abt $35!!!! I blew my 21 with 35 hrs on it. The 22 rod has what looks like a DLC coating on the wrist pin side. After 4 months the Crank Works rod became available and that's what I used and it cost $265.

Correct they added a coating to the wrist pin area and changed the heat treatment to them. Crankworks confirmed that as well their rods are currently back ordered along with CP-Carrillo. XPR motorworks also recommends the 22 crank or any one of the rods from Carrillo, Crankworks or Pro-X. He specifically uses Carrillo and Pro-X you can get a Pro-X for $175 definitely worth changing out just as a safety precaution alone

My 2020 Yz450f with 95 hours on it. 15 hours on the piston. Vet rider and BOOM! Crank rod snapped. Which then Broke the cylinder and both cases. Hit the balancer. Destroyed 2 shift forks and hit the shift drum. Only thing that is ok is the head with the valves. IMG 8827IMG 8831IMG 8838IMG 8841IMG 8843IMG 8849

Did you have the updated connecting rod in it or the original one?

How do you know if your bike has the updated connecting rod?

I have a low-hour 2020 YZ450F I'd like to ensure doesn't do that ^^^ if possible.

Pretty sure they didn't change the rod until 22.

My son in law who was Pro level put 60+ hrs on a 20 YZ 450 and had no problems. I was 62 years old when I blew my 21 with 35 hrs so it is hit and miss but it is a risky gamble!

Did you end up replacing the connecting rod with a beefy Carrillo or Crank Works or similar?

What other serious failures are you aware of with the 2020-2022 YZ450Fs?

I put a crank works rod in it when I repaired it but didn't keep the bike because I had two bikes and wasn't doing it to both of them so I switched brands. That was all I heard of on that generation.
