My son races Mx. I see more aftermarket pipes than stock. Other than a stock class is an aftermarket pipe that beneficial? I’ve never ridden a stock 2 stroke to be honest. So I’ve never had a back to back test. My son is mid pack local. Far from riding the bike to potential. But he thinks a pipe will help so other than mental is it worth it. Thanks

Until he's a constant top ten, spend your money on well maintained bike and tuned motor.
Your right mental: Everyone else has so I need it.
Mental is in the Right hand and the Throttle!!

I pride myself on having a top notch bike. That’s never an issue. He has a trainer. So that’s taken care of as well.

Pipes used to make a big difference on some models a few years ago. These days they mostly just move the power around a bit. If he really wants and thinks a pipe will help try to find a pro circuit badge off one of their pipes and get it welded on the stock pipe. Or get the nickle plating stripped off and tell him you had a custom pipe made

The Stock pipes on the newer KTM/HSQ 85's are good. We've got 3 of the bikes here and use stock, PC and FMF... no major or even really noticeable difference. Like Chump said, they might just move the power a hair. I'd be surprised if your kid could tell the difference in blind back to back tests. Getting these bikes jetted correctly is a much bigger improvement than any pipe.

Agree with what was said above. I would add put your money in suspension. The power of these bikes isn’t an issue and while the stock suspension is good, it’s not great. Saw more progression after his suspension was done. More confidence and faster corners.

Any suggestions on jetting. Currently it’s stock with the needle on position 2. Under 1000ft always

You did the right thing dropping the needle from 3 to 2. That is the most important change. It should be pretty good on pump gas at this point if everything else is stock. Is there any drool coming out the pipe?

When it gets hot again next summer, try the spare needle (NRJC) on clip-2. That will be 1/2 clip leaner than where you are now. You may want to lean the pilot or main 1-step as needed also at that point.

Awesome thank you. Bike has very little spooge. Just one small drip after 4 sessions. Nothing some vpr won’t fix

TC85 tips -
Drop squish to .028 next top end if you haven't. It's waay too much from factory usually.
Buy red power valve spring from a 250sx and run flush with cases
polish PV linkage so works smoothly

Pipes - we ran stock, FMF, BUDS/HGS & Bill's. Bills worked best overall & bit stronger than Factory. HGS a close second but build quality/fit not as good. FMF wasn't as good as stock. Like FGR01 mentioned the stock pipe works very well.

My son was a top local 85/supermini rider for a couple years. We never chased the dream just did a few west coast nationals here & there. Until his last year on SM he was running a "dad tuned" 85cc even in his big wheel bike. Still one a ton of motos & got plenty of holeshots against full mod 85's & 105's. The 18+ KTM 85cc engine is hands down the best stock 85 ever built..............He would have rode that bike forever if he didn't grow up......

It's a lighter single stage spring. It allows the engine to come on the pipe a bit quicker.......I have given these settings to multiple people and they have all been happy with results. I did a ton of testing/tuning on our 85's vs just having some builder lighten my wallet. They are so good out of the box just getting the delivery dialed to the rider goes a long way, imo......

Tracktor, how far back do you think you can go before these 85's lose the tunability that makes the KTM 2 Strokes so good, I'm guessing a handful of years at least?

My nephew isn't worried about racing but likes riding, and it's almost 85 time, so don't want to throw money away until he's more keen.

My opinion only (I am no KTM fanboy by any stretch just had boys that rode & worked on every single color over the years)- Even the 13-17 are better than any other current 85's if in good shape. The 18+ KTM/Husky/Gasgas is on another level altogether. Originally I wasn't a fan of air forks but once valved they were flawless. My youngest still rates every bike of of his 18 TC85 which is going strong at 200 hours with another kid riding it. We raced - YZ85's KX85's 2015 KTM 85's and 2018 Huskys plus I rebuild bikes for other people so have experience with all of them......Really wanted the 2018 YZ85 to be better but ended up being lipstick on a pig............TL:DR anything 13+ would be fine if in good shape......
