There are caps made with no vent hose and completely smooth. It vents under the rim of the cap , but has a ball bearing check valve for when it tips over. Check out IRP LLC. Ian is a good dude and makes some cool stuff.

I quit running one a few years ago due to a similar reason. My bike would run for 2 laps, then just die. After a few minutes, it would fire back up and run fine for another 2 laps. Drove me crazy trying to figure out the problem, people were saying it was electrical, changed coils, cdi, etc... Then one day my buddy pulled that hose off and my bike ran fine ever since. Pinch

One of those stupid things almost killed me. Put one on my 07 crf450 years ago mid-day, went out on the track and on the face of a jump right when I was at full throttle the bike almost died out. Every time the motor was under heavy load it would sputter..took a while to figure out the one I bought didn`t breathe well enough, had to drill a hole through it then it ran fine.
