This isnt my first 250 2 stroke. Ive had a 2005 TM250mx which i loved, 2008 Rm250 which was abit bland after the tm (followed by a lengthy break from mx), a 2015 250sx which i really liked but sold to buy a house and now this 2019 sx250 which replaces my 2018 fc450 that i could never gel with. First and last 4stroke its just not my thing.
I got the ktm in may last year and everything was great, i was glad to be back on a 250 again it just suits me i think. Heres a pic from the day it arrived bough sight unseen from a dealer
The only thing i did to start with was swap the spring out for a heavier one and adjust the forks to match then fit new graphics
Next up was a suspension revalve as i cased a jump and managed to burst the seal inside the air chamber on the forks when i cased a jump really badly resulting in them dropping a few inches
I know i could have just repaired the chamber but i had to travel a fair distance to get this done so just went for the revalve with uprated bladder on the rear aswell
I was happy with the bike after that, rode it abit and was starting to get used to 2stroke riding again
Then the carb issues began
I had replaced everything in the mikuni apart from the body itself, one piece at a time resulting in months of not getting a real riding session in due to problems.
I also fitted a boyesen rad valve after inspecting the standard reeds and not being happy with them not seating properly and a vented airbox cover which i like
I even managed to get a jd block gasket kit for it which made only a little difference (im in Scotland)
Still not right
I dont know why the carb would go bad all of a sudden but i had enough and ordered a new keihin carb from a 2016 sx250 (jd jetting gave me some settings to try in the new carb that were perfect straight away) i had always thought my 2015 was faster/more aggresive anyway.
The mikuni now sits on a shelf in the garage
This completely cured the issue and the bike now runs great at last so with only one session to check it we went racing which went well

I then replaced the bar mounts with some xtrig ones after i crashed over a jump and bent the standard ones so bad i couldnt get the bolts out
I dont know how i did that ither ...
Nothing really to add after this ive just been enjoying it really apart from tyres and a new throttle cable until the current lockdown restrictions started.
I have managed to pick up a pro circuit platinum and 304 silencer that i havent been able to ride with yet
The noise difference alone is worth it

It just wasnt quite as special or as fast as the tm i had before or even either ktms ive had since
I would say if your interested in a newer sx250 watch for the bolts on the upper engine mounts coming loose and maybe you will be unlucky like me and have carb issues from the oem mikuni...
I will say though in my riding group there is a 2018 sx300, 2019 sx150, 2020 tc250 and 2021 tc250 which all use the mikuni and none have had any issues whatsoever with it
Despite the issues ive had (alot have been caused by me crashing lol) this might be the favourite bike ive had i cant see me ever selling it if i can help it, i like it that much
The Shop
Luxon 4-Post Bar Mounts
$189.95 - $239.95
DeCal Works Huge Plastic Inventory of UFO and Polisport kits.
The RK tek head made a really nice improvement on my 2018. Definitely worth it.👍
Im not sure how much/if its lost any top end without putting it on a dyno which isnt really an option as i dont have a working mikuni at hand anyway...
Hopefully if it has lost any the pc system will make up for it.
I have thought about having my new 36 bored or oval bored to a 38 if i can find someone in the uk to do it at a decent price.
I did try the jarvis mods on my mikuni but it was already throwing up problems so i dont have a real idea what it feels like unfortunately
I dont know if i will go for a high comp head or not, i was offered a skimmed oem head but i ride deep sand most of the time, not really sure if it would be worth it
What do you think?
These bikes really rip stock! If you're not really looking for more power than I'd say no
3 months is a long time off ...
Good news is the pro circuit system rips!
What a difference its made and the sound just adds to it
I had been considering a stic for the keihin but for me now it really doesnt need one, this thing pulls more than hard enough even in the deep sand of my local track, also fitted a guts racing seat cover
Cant wait to get racing now
New clutch plates and tyres on the 250 along with for seals and wheel bearings, shes at 73h now almost time for a piston i think
Everybody using vertex in these or?
Cant say ive noticed any vibration changes tbh this bike isnt too vibey anyway compared to a yz or anything
Only thing is id like to fit a 10-15mm riser but cant find one which works with the xtrig mounts i have
Btw good luck on your race!
Im not sure if i prefer them to spring or not… sometimes i think they are but most of the time i dont notice them tbh
What i am sure about is that im not a fan of the oem neken bars, the pro tapers on my ‘18 husky 450 were a much nicer bend
Been looking at windham bend lately
Little less sweep back and abit more rise
Thanks we will see how it goes
Pit Row
23h on the previous one mostly deep sand riding
Thoughts on the look of it?
Keihin pwk 36 with 38 pilot, necj needle 3rd clip and 165 main jet
