yea you have to be 15 Roczen missed the first 4 or 5 rounds becasue he has only turned 15.. Jeffery Herlings is only 14 but might race the last GP as he will be 15 by then. Tortelli was racing in the GPs when he was 15 in 1995. Roczen is awesome... Barcia speed only 2 years younger....

it has been that young for years like i said tortelli was 15 in the gps in his first year and that was 1995. i think most of them wait until they are 16/17 though.

has always been that age, plus we dont have the amateur program like you guys have that prepares the kids until the age they are allowed to go pro.

Ken Roczen is a really fast kid, but very sketchy too. Smooth is not a word he's familiar with.

He's also been a "hot or cold" kind of rider, but seems to have shaken that some.

He came over for Mini O's one year and was a huge standout, smoking a few classes.

Came to LL's, last year I think it was, and could only muster up barely top ten's if I remember right

He's a fast aggressive kid and if he can keep improving, watch out.

I guess that the AMA realizes that pro motocross isn't forever and being a top pro is few and far between. Dumping school may not be what is best for every racer, and some parents don't get it. So maybe they adjust the rules to help MX dads make competent decisions. Why home school Johnny "mid pack" Smith if he can't be a pro until he's 17 or 18? If the kid was pro material at 16, he should be at 18. High School worked for Tim Ferry and John Dowd, both of which could still snot on most home schooled hopefuls today.

11 year old kids in other countries sew soccer balls for 10 hours a day, to help pay the family rent, instead of getting a education. Yeah it's different, but the concept is the same.

Euros have no SX season, so the kids can stay in school and get a proper education. Yank kids are not getting the schooling, and by the time they realise there is no future in the sport, they are hawking handlebars at the local shop, or doing assembly line work.

Tortelli rode his very first GP at the end of the 1994 season, and he was already 16.

Also keep in mind, GP's aren't back-to-back, week after week. The races are pretty spread out over the season from March to September

i don't belive rising the age will do the job........
looking at amature national you see a bunch of kids that are already professionals
even the pro teams are racing there....
i guess while there's outstanding kids, the market will take over cuz they will always need the good parts and a lot of money and time for trainning to run up front.......
only the parents can give then the values to be educated and have a plan b, and if the parents don't do that its not the sport or the gamebox or pc fault.........
a fact is that the kids grow and get to be big enough to ride the big bikes since 14/15, many even get to big to ride the 85s at that age......
so if some kids have been racing all their life, are fast and fit enough to race the best, why not let them..???? they will be racing somewhere anyway
with all this age thing, i think what ama is doing is making rules that will send the fastest amature kids do a year or two of mx2 in europe, before returning to the us outdoors at 18
