Just put 0,3 litres instead 6,3 litres of gas and you are good to go for few laps with a 6kg lighter bike. We did a blind test with a few riders and they didn't feel the difference. I think that how heavy or light bike feels depends on a much more than how much than just the weight of the bike (for example engine character, clutch feel, ergonomics, weight distribution, grip, seat and so on) .

I’ve owned and and put many hours on in the last 6 years a 15 YZ250F (stock), 08 YZ250 (modded), 17 250sx (heavily modded), 18 RMZ450 (modded) and currently own a full stock 19 250SXF.

And a 250SXF is far from a pig, one of the faste/t track bikes out of the lot, pro or not.
When a 250 engine weighs almost the same as a 450 I would say it is relatively heavy compared to the 450. I said nothing about how it ran or the bike handled. Clearly the ktm 250 engine weighs about the same as the Japanese engines. Imagine if ktm takes lessons learned from the 450 and apply to the 250. I would expect that engine to be quite a bit lighter than the 450.

I’m not sure the weight difference should be that great. The transmission parts are going to weigh about the same clutch will be close as well. The top end parts should be a little lighter but not drastically so as you still have all the same pieces.

Yeah but the Japanese 450 engine/trans is clearly a lot heavier than KTM 450 and a Japanese 250. It stands to reason if KTM can make a 450 much lighter than a Japan 450 they can do the same with a 250. Maybe the weight savings is not as big but still you would expect 4-5 lbs lighter at least. Maybe the KTM 250 gearbox is the same as the 450 whereas the Japanese are using a lighter duty gearbox on the 250?

That KTM clutch basket looks bombproof. I don't see how they sell the GasGas models for almost the same price as the Japanese bikes.

The SXF 250 engine is a small bore 350 engine. So it’s a little larger overall and the clutch and transmission are made to handle the power of the 350. Compared to the 450 the 250/350 DOHC cylinder head is heavier than the SOHC of the 450.
I think if KTM would make a pure 250 engine they could find a kg or two. However the 450 engine is an engineering marvel!
