So after collecting parts for a while. During the recent lockdown(s) I started looking at some of the amazing work that mxav8r, tokyo_tiddler, mitch36 and many others have been doing and decided I wanted a go myself. My goal is to build the bike to be as close as I can get it. It’s not going to be NOS, think more at a national towards the end of the season 😂. I’ve got a few motor parts but can’t see the need to make it any faster. If anyone has any high resolution pics of the bikes from outdoors 2016 please send them over.

Looking through photos it looks like the team used GET ignitions for SX but switched to vortex for the nationals

My first real find was this tank, I knew it was a team tank when I bought it but I never realised it’s history until I unpacked it. The team ran larger black tanks but I have no idea who makes them and was lucky to stumble across this one. I have checked it over and done a few days riding with it to make sure it’s sound. Luckily, it is!

I picked this up years ago and always held onto it, it’s much shorter than an off the shelf pipe and it’s been altered internally, I’m sure they’ve developed them a lot since this early unit but it’s still cool in my eyes

The team also run a different header, I have been trying to find one of these for years.

The team also alter the rear brake, again I was really lucky to fall across this. I’ve had it vapour blasted, it just needs some hand finishing now.

very cool on the team issue parts.

What engine work have you got planned? Have you got suspension?

I’m planning to run it how I raced it. GYTR head and cams, uprated rod, HC GYTR piston, Hinson basket, GYTR air boot and a vortex. I know at 2016 it’s classed as old, but it is really competitive for any local club racing IMO

Trick eng. does a lot of the work for the team, he can make you blocked off master cylinders, modified brake pedal, and sells the swingarm pivot plugs.

That’s great thanks. I’m still on the hunt for one of those rear brake pedals!

Can anyone shed some light on what this is and what it does? It looks like something to do with the rad overflow but I’m not sure

Awesome! Looks like you’re well on your way to a great build! Some really nice finds so far. Excited to see this through.

The header is really cool. I love the welded FMF tag on it. I’d like to have one on my ‘18. I’m slowly getting parts for mine to be a ‘18 Star Yamaha replica. Great build so far!

Originally I was planning to do a 2018 build, so I have a few 2018 bits. Then I stumbled across some bits that were 2016 specific that were far too good to pass up, so had to change my plans. Anyway I have a 2018 Ferrandis seat, and I've managed to get a 2016 team seat too. But when tiding up they were noticeably different weight wise. I've done the 2018 seat, a fairly new stock 2016 seat and then the 2016 team seat

I've spent most of the weekend scrubbing the frame. I can't seem to get the matte sections to come up well though. Any tips/tricks would be appreciated

Maybe try some scotchbrite wheels on a dremel or buffer? The cast pieces are hard to get a good shine so I usually just try for clean and nothing more.
There are some guys who will sand them down to completely smooth but that seems excessive.

I picked up a dremel this week and it’s really helping. Thanks for the tip. Going to try and get some time on this next weekend and get the roller built

I thought those were just the FX tanks.

You could be right. I'll check for any markings at the weekend. I had a look at the promo photos for the 2016 FX's though and they were grey. I'll weigh them at the weekend too as the black tank might be a bit lighter

Yeah, don't take my word for it. Somebody I thought might know told me that. It made since to me because I assume building a mold for a tank would be rather expensive, especially for a small run.

I’ve got the frame as good as I think I can get it so I’m going to start putting it together. I’m going to get some new foot peg mounts, the photos don’t really show it but you can really tell the contrast against the frame in person. Luckily the team ran stock mounts in 2016, I dread to think how much the Ti mounts they use now must cost.

Managed to get a little bit done today. I’m using the SFS clamps as looking at PitBits from the nationals that year Webb was still running them. I could be wrong but I think the rest of the team had moved away from them after J.Mart had an issue with them. The shock I’m using at the moment is a technical touch unit. It’s more tired than I was hoping for when I bought it and the adjuster isn’t the right colour compared to the one used by the team at the time but it’s closer than the standard shock. Also the Kashima on the forks isn’t the best but they still look the part, again the team clearly had different adjusters but i wouldn’t even know where to start trying to find them.

I saw this photo with no number board and saw the black cable tie pads but don’t know what attached to them. There were GET stickers on the forks for the nationals that year but the Rev counter on the front mudguard had disappeared from supercross which makes me wonder if they had made the switch to vortex. Maybe these pads were left over from the GET system.

Nice work 👍🏻 Had one of those bikes a year ago, really good bike with handling and suspension. Lacked the power though, was on the edge to big bore it to 270cc and portiing/cams/second injector. But felt it would be to costly at that moment.
